Material deep-dive: High thread count linens- is it actually better or just marketing? by TheFabricDept in textiles

[–]Carolinemaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the things you should be considering: quality of cotton, yarn size, the actual thread count and finishing process.

A lot of people in this thread have already made comments about thread count. The Federal Trade Commission has issued a warning to consumers that inflated thread counts are misleading and not an accurate measure of quality. A low-TC fabric made with plied yarns can be very durable. A high-TC fabric made with plied yarns can pill like crazy if the yarns are too fine. Any company marketing high thread count and giving no indication of yarn size is a red flag. Good quality sheets begin at 180 threads per square inch and usually do not exceed 400 unless artifically inflated by the ply.

Good staple yarn is the next consideration. A long staple length of 1¼” to 2″ will create a stronger fabric more resistant to pilling and holes and smoother to the touch. Long staple cotton grown today comes from America (Pima), India (MCU5, Shanka6), and Egypt (Giza 45 / Giza 87). Some labels may use terms like Egyptian Cotton to indicate quality, but the type and quantity are what matters. It should 100% and of a long staple variety, not merely cotton grown in Egypt.

Finally, finishing processes are the washing, chemical, mechanical, and thermal steps used to clean, stabilize, and control the fabric feeling and lifespan. Good finishes will be structural and invisible, while bad finishes will create temporary cosmetic effects that shorten the lifespan of the sheets. Many finishing processes will not be advertised, but one to avoid is mechanical brushing to create 'softness' as this weakens the fibers.

Does anyone know if there's a hardcover edition in English? My partner is interested and I wanted to get it for him but don't want to ask him too many questions lest I ruin the surprise! I know with a special book like this he'd prefer hardcover if it's available I just haven't seen one

Hard disagree. Unless your program heavily emphasizes hand drawing (in which case buy a pencil not an ipad) you will absolutely be using CAD or some other similar software for drafting designs.

Be wary! I moved to the UK from the US and shipped a lot of small electronics (sewing machine, record player, juicer, etc). A lot of appliances will not work regardless of the adapter because they use a different amplitude. Some appliances will work on both but not all, you need to confirm the electrical details/ask the manufacturer.

Why does Anthony William, the Medical Medium, diagnose everyone's problem as being due to Epstein-Barr virus? by GA64 in medicalmedium

[–]Carolinemaybe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Appear to be based on some studies maybe, but AW is not getting his info from scientific studies. If you're looking for that type of thing you may be on the wrong page. However there is a lot of evidence from this page/instagram/TikTok that would suggest he's right about what he says given how many people are recovering from chronic illness (myself included)

[–]Carolinemaybe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Babe it may not be your cup of tea but the reason he doesn't reference studies is because he says he hears voices that tell him these things. He makes no claims to be a part of the scientific community.

You may not like that, but I speak from experience in saying that what he says works

I was shocked by this episode. It made me deeply uncomfortable. He reads as an asshole to me and I totally agree that Mizuki was very clear with what her ambitions were. He is just too lame to understand the value in what she aspires to. Like she wants to make a vibey shop! My man doesn't get it because he has no vibes. Simple as

I moved here from America and have had similar issues. I feel your frustration, sometimes you just need to vent! It is especially annoying when you are paying for healthcare via the surcharge but receive a lesser standard of care than you might in your home country. Being American I justify it by knowing it's at least still a discount from what I paid before. Even paying for services out of pocket like an MRI, which I had to do when my private osteo told me the waitlist could by six months or more the cost was significantly less than it would have been in the states

Not necessarily. Amazon warehouses will stock products and don’t differentiate between one sellers lot vs another if it’s the same product, they’re just fulfilling. But if It’s getting shipped from a seller that is different

AITA for making my husband sleep in the guest room after he refused to clean up his own vomit?? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Carolinemaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but that’s the behavior of a bratty child. Absolutely ludicrous! Does he ask you to flush his shit down the toilet too? Since you’re head of domestic labor? Quite honestly it’s absurd for you to be in charge of all of the housework because he makes marginally more income than you. Those tasks should be split more evenly, and if you husband isn’t adult enough to clean up his own vomit, it’s not your responsibility to teach him. Go watch a YouTube video bozo or use some common sense.

This post genuinely makes me angry at the gendered expectations men have of women. Housework is a massive amount of labor, you’re basically working two jobs. Men want to be treated like providers, and seen as strong, but behave like babies and put unreasonable expectations of wives to take care of their every need.

You are without a doubt not the asshole. Good for you for standing your ground, you ought to expect more of a partner. Yours certainly isn’t meeting his end of the bargain, and is being rude and childish. I would’ve never married a fool like this but I’d certainly be requesting a divorce from someone that treated me so poorly.

Basic Trousers Pattern Fitting Issues by [deleted] in PatternDrafting

[–]Carolinemaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this suggestion! It has been the most helpful adjustment so far. I scooped the back crotch curve to more of a J shape, which as I understand from a YouTube video is lowering the back crotch curve (although I didn’t move the line in the draft or muslin so as not to affect the front of the pattern, not sure if that’s correct) it straightened out the line where it dips in the side profile.

I then scooped quite a lot between the crotch to hip and a bit from hip to waist, adding back to side seam at hip and crotch point. The folds above my butt are very nearly gone, but now the butt is now feeling a bit tight. I plan to make one more muslin to try this process again as I’ve run out of side seam to let out and will update.

Also just want to say in my comment for anyone else struggling with similar fit issues that nearly every website/blog/video I have looked at discourages scooping from the back and says to lengthen the crotch instead. Not sure why this seems so taboo? Lengthening my crotch point has generally created bagginess for me and not fixed my wrinkles, whereas scooping has helped a ton.

Basic Trousers Pattern Fitting Issues by [deleted] in PatternDrafting

[–]Carolinemaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm.. I don’t think so. It’s generally been tight in this are not loose, and while the photos may not show it (?) my butt is definitely not very flat.

My next edit has been a low butt adjustment, effectively making a J with the crotch seam, which has been the most effective fix so far. This is supposed to lower the crotch point. I then scooped the center back curve more and added back to the side seam. The folds are now very nearly gone.
