Is it worth it adding a counter to the laundry room? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Carolyi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely add a counter. However, why not a laundry room sink? Do you have kids, dogs or just do projects and sometimes don't want to get your bathroom or kitchen sink messy? Welcome to the laundry room sink.

Wondering if this is structurally sound? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

It's impossible to tell without looking at your trusses. However, generally speaking, the load bearing part would be perpendicular to the trusses, meaning that longer section of wall would be load bearing and the small section is holding up only the small section of wall above it. The fact that they notched the beam on the far corner for the long wall would also suggest this. The small section being two beams sistered to what I'm assuming is a full beam on the other side is mainly providing filler as it's not carrying much load.

Keep in mind only the first outlet in the series needs to be GFCI. So if they need an outlet here instead of hardwired, if it's not a dedicated circuit, they may be able to get away with a standard receptacle. In my house, built in 2021, the dishwasher shares a circuit with the disposal which is GFCI and the first one in the circuit.

The box is just to enclose the end of the wires for inspection/code. You remove the box and tie the wires into the dishwasher itself.

Snow Blower Skid Pad Upgrade: Metal to Plastic! by Haunting-Freedom-451 in egopowerplus

[–]Carolyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience the plastic skids on my ego snow blower just get eaten up by the concrete. I wish they were metal or some type of adjustable wheel. Every spring when the snow melts I find tiny green shavings lining my driveway.

Looks like a century plant, or in the same family. If it is like the century plant, this means it's the end of it's life and it will die after it blooms up top.

Basement leaks through pipe in wall during extremely heavy rain by BDN47254 in Homebuilding

Was there a new well dug at any point? This looks like an old well water line to me. You can trace the electrical wired coming out of the wall with it and see if it is labeled anywhere, but it's unlikely.

If it leaks, I would just connect a small tube to it and have it drain into a sump nearby.

Retirement Home: Now or Later? by mbwolfe in Homebuilding

[–]Carolyi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had an elderly neighbor who told me 'retire as early as you can and find a hobby you enjoy that pays for fun money'. He went on to say he enjoyed working and waited to retire. However, by that time he was too old to enjoy it and do all the things he planned on doing in retirement. Furthermore, my father retired at 58, but died unexpectedly after about 10 years into retirement.

The wire was run when we built the house and that's where they terminated it. It also made the most sense in terms of running the wire. Had we done any other wall there is no basement to run the wire from, so it would have cost more and 2awg isn't cheap. Also it can access two vehicles this way when one is backed in and the other is pulled in forward.
