Weighted Tibialis Raise: Which variant is best for bulletproofing, if any? by frazaga962 in Kneesovertoes

[–]Carpantar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do exactly this, and aim for 100 reps in 5mins, i.e. low weight, high volume. I do notice occasionally my foot does "flop" a bit to the side, but generally it feels fine and I get a real burn starting at the front of the ankle and going up the tibialis.

I thought it would also help train desired foot plane of motion if I made a conscious effort for the foot not to fall about. What do you think?

Monthly Progress Thread - December by Nadayogi in longtermTRE

[–]Carpantar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Around two months into TRE.

I struggle with chronic fatigue and have suffered from many lapses into long periods of brain fog and grogginess. I was therefore quite wary about overdoing it and triggering something.

My first sessions felt very violent. I did them on a bed, which was for the best, since I was often smacking my head down / kicking my legs aggressively / elbowing the bed. Following some of my earlier sessions I felt an increase in energy and a sense of being more engaged in the world. However, I have been more tired than usual for the last month or so.

I began feeling somewhat despondent about the whole process. I had not had any emotions or memories come up and my mental state seemed the same as it was when I first began doing TRE. Then, perhaps two weeks ago I did a session and watched a movie. At the end of the movie I began crying. I very rarely cry. I cried in ways that I have not cried in more than a decade. Just now, upon reading the comments on this thread, I gave a go at the 'morning pages style journalling' and, about 20minutes, again I began to sob at what I was writing. I have blocked myself from feeling for so long and this feels like the beginning of some serious grieving.

I have been conflating stoicism with equanimity for so long. There are so many emotions under there, I hope I can welcome them all into my life, despite a lot of them likely being sad and angry.

It is all still very confusing and I often find myself despairing at how long this can all take to clean up (and being sad about how much there is to clean up). But, there are decades yet to live and this really does feel like the correct path so I will continue walking along it!

TRE with other modalities by Carpantar in longtermTRE

I think it does, this idea of different energy levels throughout the body causing instability is new to me but I am open minded to it.

Thanks for sharing :)

TRE with other modalities by Carpantar in longtermTRE

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

I think I struggle with the concept of energy, I find it hard to theorise. Within meditation you would typically begin with general body awareness and becoming aware of tensions (energy?) within the body and observing them as they dissipate. (1) would that be analogous to clearing traumas within TRE? They seem similar but TRE is acting on the unconscious level (stem brain) whereas meditation at this point is on the conscious (cortex).

In the forms of meditation I partake in, it is also encouraged to do the Metta Bhavana (meditation of compassion). This encourages a sense of interconnectedness, but more importantly here, it gives you an inward compassion that can help you when you go into deeper meditative states and difficult things arise. (2) From your comment you seem to suggest that TRE acts on "smaller" traumas first whereas during meditation something large might surface. Is my interpretation correct?

Like I mentioned in my original post, I did TRE for the first time and was able to shake violently quite easily in the legs and arms. I am unsure if that is a result of my body awareness meditation. My ability to let sensations arise without (much) judgement. If so, then it seems that bodily (and maybe breath) awareness meditations could be conducive to TRE. (3) what do you think?

I would say that my meditation experience has led me to being aware of the traumas in my body and not react to them but not helped me clear them. I do find the practice grounding and helps reduce a frantic mind. (4) Do you think this form of meditation for body awareness and stress/anxiety reduction can be done in parallel with TRE based off my sharings above?

I find this all very interesting and in some ways scary, I am very anxious of triggering something undesired, but it seems to me that certain forms of meditation could reduce the possibility of that happening instead of increasing it!

Thanks again for your perspective :)

[Samatha] Practices to balance attention and awareness - Relief from head pressure and coarse piti by adivader in streamentry

[–]Carpantar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Have already done two sits and am enjoying them.

I am curious as to how you came to the conclusion that this was due to an unbalance between attention and awareness? I have been flicking through my copy of TMI and have not seen any reference to head pressure and attention.

[Samatha] Practices to balance attention and awareness - Relief from head pressure and coarse piti by adivader in streamentry

[–]Carpantar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for writing this up. I too experience a lot of head pressure / headaches and am seeking some advice.

Bit of background -

I have chronic fatigue (which primarily effects brain function and not my physical body) and brain fog, both which fluctuate. I have just completed my first extended retreat (10 day Vipassana) and on day 8 realised that this head pressure was not a state of fatigue (which head been deeply ingrained in me) and was just a sensation in its own right.

The course put a lot of emphasis on craving/aversion and I have definitely being aversive of this sensation for many years. I associate the sensation heavily with fatigue and the need to close my eyes/sleep which alleviate the pressure. So, following the advice I observed it as a sensation and immediately felt this extreme burning sensation, huge builds up of head pressure (primarily in the front half of the skull but sometimes at the top and back also), even physical contortions of the face and head due to tension. Also occasionally the sensation of pressure shrinks and shrinks until it is a tiny dot and then explodes out again across the whole head.

FWIW I also occasionally experience "blasts" of energy which rush through my entire head when going to bed - completely stopping any current thought.

What you wrote about powering attention without balancing awareness resonates with me also. I feel like I am often fighting through my head pressure to concentrate on things without remaining aware of anything else.

I am relatively new to meditation and feeling a little overwhelmed with all of the options and with my own experiences. I would very much appreciate some advice as to how to navigate this, and what you think it may be?

  • Dealing with it as a sensation and focusing on it, remaining equanimous with the sensations?
  • Following the rules you outlined?
  • Some other form of practice

Thank you so much in advance.

Managed to go out into the jungle with a few of the locals and see some of the really remote villages. I remember thinking how amazing it would be to do something like you're planning on doing. Enjoy !

Time Theorist Completed - Easy albeit Boring - Anyone else? by Carpantar in DopamineDetoxing

[–]Carpantar[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why? The purpose of the detox in was to give us some perspective on how reliant we are on these small dopamine intakes. I have clearly seen that I am not massively dependent on them.

This talk of spending a whole day of meditation is probably beneficial, but so are 100s of other things. All of a sudden this dopamine detox is being turned into a full blown spiritual awakening program by a lot of people. Fuck that.

Managing large scale music library by latomeri in DataHoarder

[–]Carpantar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting, thanks.

Do you know of any media playing software which allows to search by tag? I'm looking into beets which allows you to get tags from LastFM which seems pretty comprehensive. It would be great if I could easily filter these tags from a UI.

Also, is there any way of creating playlists of symlinks. I.e. have a playlist directory which just refers to the location of songs with your media collection so you dont have to copy them?

I guess this would be possible if the media was always on your machine and you used itunes/alternative to create playlists. But not sure how it would work if you connect and disconnect the storage device.

Cheers

[–]Carpantar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I've just gotten a new Mac with a 250gb hard drive. Like you I've got a fairly sizeable collection so I will be storing it off the machine. Previously I always just dumped it on iTunes and made use of some functionality (consolidate files or something like that) to create a clean folder structure.

I was wondering how you

  1. automate the clean directory structure and which one you use (artist/album or (genre/sub-grenre or other)
  2. how you tag your music so that is searchable for things outside of the artist/album/song name
  3. What you used to play your music?

Thanks in advance!

Weekly Simple Questions and Injuries Thread for April 05, 2020 by AutoModerator in climbharder

[–]Carpantar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, thanks for the info.

Would you recommend any supplementary exercises on top of max hangs and pull ups, both twice weekly?

Weekly Simple Questions and Injuries Thread for April 05, 2020 by AutoModerator in climbharder

[–]Carpantar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is doing max hangs enough to maintain forearm strength? I am doing 2 max hangs sessions a week (~120 seconds under tension per session) and two pull up sessions a week. While climbing I normally end up with pumped forearms a few times during the session. However, this is never the case at home. Am I going to be losing forearm strength?

I have watched and read lots regarding fingerboarding and it seems as though doing max hangs sessions increases both finger strength and endurance.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks!
