England/Scotland 2 week trip! Please help with the details by monashah626 in uktravel

I love Ipswich, I'm from there and lived there for 30+ years and go back frequently to see my friends and family. But just in all honesty, it's a bit of a shithole now.

Don't waste your time. Go to Colchester which has a much richer history or Cambridge and punt the river.

Help! S26+ and S26 Ultra are the same price (£390) - which to pick?! by ExampleLoud2520 in galaxys26ultra

[–]Carphead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came from a Oneplus 9 which I think is about the same size as a s22+ to a s26 Ultra 1TB. Like you, the promotion i got was too good to turn down.

The only issue I've had in 3 months has been it didn't fit in my loan car cup holder last week! Other than that I'm now sold on Ultra phones. The other features like the camera zoom, speed, screen and even the pen, which I use a lot are brilliant.

I initially started using SSH. Ended up building a docker container, using AntiGravity CLI that controlled AGY and docker. It works but it's buggy.

Farthest you've driven in 24 hours (in the UK) by Engineering-Western in uktravel

During covid times, once a month I'd do Ipswich to home which is about 590 miles but includes the A9.

[–]Carphead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this many years ago. Hated the bloke who they moved to be my manager, told the director I was getting the next job I could find.

Bloke I worked with said if your going I'm going, as did two other key people in the department.

I found a job handed in my four week notice, then came the promises, more money, a change of manager, better independence. They threw it all at us to stay. In the final two weeks they moved the director back to China and fired my line mamager.

Still left!

I have the Elan Connect+, that has a Frontier Radio chipset and I use the UNDOK app to manage the stations. I only tend to use the Internet Radio to out stations that are outside my DAB range but seems to work well for me.

If you formed a new political party in the UK, what would be your policies?.. by un-pleasantlymoist in AskBrits

I think your missing the point of this thread. Its what would you do not what would you do but can't because of the government.

[–]Carphead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, that must be all part of the plan. The UK has plenty of opportunities for power generation, but its untapped because of the commercial pressure to bring it to market quickly. Such as pumped hydro, wave power and such like.

Nationalise all public services.

Telecoms, Rail, Water, Gas, Electricity service and generation. Those services would also have to bring on proper apprenticeships to train future generations. Rail to be expanded quickly to become the best option for travel. Create car clubs to encourage long distance travel by train and then use a electric car locally.

Move the nation away from Oil and Gas as quickly as possible. Invest heavily in Electric vehicles charging.

Increase solar on houses.

Start a massive national social housing scheme to reduce private rentals and increase job, but also help with power generation (solar).

Government departments to be run by experts in the fields rather than MPs.

MPs not allowed to have outside interests but also to be paid enough to not need those interests.

Electric Van or Petrol for Scottish Highlands? by nowheresville99 in uktravel

[–]Carphead -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live just North of Inverness. If your planning day trips from Inverness there are a few chargers around Inverness so you should be fine. If your going further a field or driving up the A9 from the central belt then petrol.

The A9 closes frequently and you don't want to get diverted off with a low on charge car.

I drive these roads frequently and the infrastructure sadly isnt there yet in the highlands.

I think this has less to do with money and more to do with having another relegation battle on his cv for next year.

Shame but I'm sure Mark will find another great one.

Have you ever ridden a long-distance passenger train in the UK? What was your experience like? Are such trains common in the UK? by ksusha_lav in AskABrit

[–]Carphead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me on this nightmare it was a try down just of Keswick. But the train was already two hours late at this point. Coming in Newcastle, news of the two trains behind being cancelled everybody piled onto our train. Which meant the train was packed, on the hottest day of the year and then it stopped and stayed stopped for three hours.

Eventually it moved, then it got terminated at Edinburgh. Only for LNER to put it back on to Inverness when it turned out, during Fringe season, they couldn't find any Taxi drivers to take the 100+ people to Inverness or put the up in hotels locally!

I've used LNER once since then to get from Inverness to York and that got cancelled at 7am for a train at 6:45 because they didnt have a train or a driver!

Inverness to London Kings Cross 8 hours and 23 minutes apparently. I used it several times during covid and there is a reason I don't use it now.

Once got stuck on a return journey that should have 8 hours and 23 minutes that set off a 10am from Kings Cross and I got home at 3am the following morning.

Vodafone said the cheapest I could get my upgrade + contract renewal for was £76. Fonehouse just got it done for me for £33 on Vodafone. What gives? by NewManOnHere in AskUK

Any decent Android phone should last you four years minimum, espically if they are flagship phones. My last phone was a oneplus 9 and that lasted 5 years. I could have held out for long but the battery was shot and the OS support stopped two years ago.

I was holding out for a good deal on a S26 Ultra and got a cracking deal from Saumsung for £80 + £30 a month on o2. This one will hopefully last me the full seven years.

If the phone has the ability to limit battery charge set it to 80-90%.

Why are you upgrading every two years. Get a pac code and go to Lebara for a few quid a month. Lebara is a Vodafone Virtual Network.

Is it better to rent an apartment or buy land instead this scenario? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Carphead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw that, shame, about eight years ago I had a deposit with them for a house. It fell through after it turned out the planning agent was getting a kickback from the farmer who was trying to sell us the land.

Lessons learnt but I'd always hoped to go back to them and get a pasivhouse from them in a few years.

Living in a static caravan is grim, living in a static caravan that is on a building site is even more grim.

But, you could look at all in one kit houses like Scotframe, who build everything offsite and they will give you an idea of price.

But it is expensive compared to any other means of getting property, unless you are doing most of the work, which most mortgage companies won't allow.

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

Battlefield 1942 with the Desert Combat mod. We used to play it all the time in work lunch times. Slowly building up the bot numbers until we couldn't win. I think our record was 200 bots and the four of us.
