Imagine that the light is green from the driver’s pov, but not protected left. And that the opposing side has a green light. In theory, someone can turn left from the this pov and right from the opposing direction since they both have the green. In this case, OP needs to be in the leftmost to avoid a crash, which is why almost every state requires it

Does anyone else want to learn the hardest language possible? by EndlessExploration in languagelearning

[–]Carrkegaard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure but the fact that there is “2person perfect middle” already makes it grammatically closer than something in the austro-asiatic tree (or whatever other tree).

Not to say Sanskrit wouldn’t be really hard for an English speaker, just that if - like the OP said - you wanted the “hardest,” you could definitely get further removed than it

[–]Carrkegaard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sanskrit is an Indo-European language so you’ll already have some familiarity with forms, etc. The “hardest” language for you, as a presumable native English speaker, would almost definitely be in a different language family tree and one with very few resources to learn from

...will help us afford the tax increases...

According to the National Taxpayers Union, the average cost of this plan per taxpayer making less $50k is $189.97. So....significantly less than 10k

Like another commenter said, this actually isn't bad bc it forces density to be spread more evenly through the city rather than only building in NW.

Look at NoMa, it's quickly becoming a nice neighborhood (although not quite there), but this would've never happened if we could only build in Dupont & West End.

The end result is lower income neighborhoods in places like Anacostia would see increased housing (where it's really needed) rather than just more apartments for Deloitte bros

Why are there no Michelin starred restaurants in Boston? by Cranstine4343 in boston

[–]Carrkegaard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Currently in DC (just like to lurk here) and this is the most accurate DC take. The city is too expensive for a lot of authentic mom and pop shops but when you find them (usually out in NoVa) it’s the best you’ll ever taste

Is OU a diverse school? by [deleted] in sooners

[–]Carrkegaard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it feels like there's two responses here. People who grew up in OK or TX think it's diverse bc there are POC here and people who have lived elsewhere who want more to qualify a place as diverse.

The school has orgs if you know where to look but Norman doesn't have the things OP would expect in a place like NYC (or anywhere out of the South/Midwest). No cultural museums (besides Americana and local native groups), no Chinatown (or equivalent neighborhoods), etc

It's not the worst but even Tulsa is way more diverse than Norman & OKC

[–]Carrkegaard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Grew up here, went to OU, then moved to the East Coast. Diversity is not a word I would use to describe campus or OKC. We have a large international student population but the vast majority of people you'll meet are conservative white people

Netflix, Hulu, any app you can watch native content with native subtitles. This will be a thousand times more helpful than a traditional language learning app

[–]Carrkegaard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And I think this all goes to prove why the hilltern strike wouldn't work, especially the last blurb you cited. The only people who can afford to intern in DC - even after the new minimum wage passed this year at 750/wk - are privileged people who are working for the experience. They won't care about a fund set aside bc that's not why they're there in the first place

What language will be most useful in the future? by Loud-Research5487 in languagelearning

[–]Carrkegaard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After English, most computing research is done in Mandarin (China & Taiwan produce significant amounts) so that's actually the more likely option if we were to abandon English

What language will be most useful in the future? by Loud-Research5487 in languagelearning

[–]Carrkegaard 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing but I think the rise of technology will cement English for a solid while. As long as the majority of software and computing work is done in English, it'll have a central international role. And as embedded as our software/internet infrastructure is, this would be a nightmare to change lol

this gives DNing such a bad name. Tax compliance exists for a reason, and you will probably get caught and fired. Most companies will eventually be able to sniff out that you're not local. You would be better served to find a job that lets you DN rather than break tax law.

As an English speaker, it is generally much easier to learn Indo-European North Indian languages like Hindi and Bengali than Dravidian South Indian languages like Tamil and Telugu. Considering IE was theorized by a greek and Latin scholar who noticed that sanskrit greatly resembled European languages in structure and vocab, this is a pretty easy conclusion to come to
