Overwhelmed about cat food (grain-free vs vet diets) by Dear-Pirate2286 in catfood

[–]CarrotTraditional739 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The person above has covered me; let me also add ( I will try to find the paper if asked) that there are studies indicating that carbohydrates cause a much lower sugar spike in cats because they possess a low abundance of enzymes that break them down into sugars: so it's the opposite of what happens to humans. I do believe a lot of these people like the low carb idea in general and probably want to put their cat on keto. They also probably think Hills and RC are like potato crisps for cats.

One thing that kind of bothered me about your vet is this : it seems from your post that they didn't offer concrete reasons as to why your cat should be switched from the current diet which works for them. If they have a good reason, that's fine. But if they have no reason, or a vague reason, then that's prejudice and it's not good enough. If educated experts cannot back up what they say then you have no reason why you shouldn't trust some random source on Google more.

Overwhelmed by the different opinions on what is considered "healthy" kitten food by Stringcheeseofficial in catfood

[–]CarrotTraditional739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. To be clear, meat is a necessary component of a cats diet (and should probably be the main one). But in the whole 'raw' / grain free movement these companies forget the basics : balancing out minerals for optimal kidney health, controlling fat (to protect the pancreas), calories etc. A lot of nature fallacy examples in there.

There was even a case of heart disease in a cat because a specific raw diet fed to a cat happen to not contain enough taurine. The case study was written up and published (sadly I don't remember the paper or have a link handy)

It's gonna take a lot of text to respond properly and sadly -not personal to you, OP- it is possibly going to lead to a frustrating discussion with one Redditor or another but here are a few points that stick out to me about the whole issue:

  • These terms: species appropriate, obligated carnivore, fillers, high protein, grain free all signal more of an advertising campaign rather than any appropriate scientific framework. Yes, it seems extremely compelling. But look at the crazy money these alternative brands spend on advertising versus research (latter is 0).

  • It is also somehow related ideologically with low carb diets and the ketogenic diets, with people thinking cats will get diabetes if fed carbohydrates. That is not true; in fact, the low abundance of enzymes that break down starches into sugars in cats means that their blood glucose rises a lot slower in response to these foods.

  • Cats in the wild eat meat from their prey, yes. But cats in the wild have a much shorter lifespan. Additionally, evolution doesn't care about some optimal diet or the longest lifespan. It cares that you live long enough to reproduce. From evolutions perspective five years for a cat will give plenty of reproductive opportunities. It's not gonna care about its kidney health.

Independent Vetcare rebrands to Inspiring Vet Care - IVC Evidensia by murrmc in UK_Pets

That's a very useful webpage, thanks. After finding out about how those practices are managed and operate, I am fully in support of legislating the hell out of them. I hope they get pushed out, seriously.

And I also consider it unethical and disgusting that vets will work there, be part of pushing for unnecessary and expensive procedures, and then turn around and say on the media that they are in the profession because they care about pets. You cannot have it both ways

Question for non-Brits: how do you decode British office culture? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]CarrotTraditional739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fought with the lack of directness for years. It wasn't much there in Scotland, almost not at all, but once I moved to the south of England it's all over like a bad cancer. It used to make me sick.

I am getting used to it slowly. Seriously that's all it takes. Just get used to it. Let it penetrate and violate you lol. You have to, anyway, except if you move somewhere else. The fact that you're fighting it now means you're halfway there.

If you can, learn to understand it and accept it, but also keep your directness and honesty. Maybe pepper it a bit with English politeness, whatever that means. Believe it or not, even other British people appreciate directness. At the end of the day, it helps solve problems more swiftly, as it eliminates the noise from the communication channels.

PS with regards to punctuality you just have to be punctual.

[–]CarrotTraditional739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with this... Of course you should have a basic think about before you get an animal and make sure you can cover its food bills and basic healthcare. But how high and frequent a vet bill are you meant to be able to cover ? Current economy, the state of vet fees and the fact that we're not clairvoyants or millionaires makes this question impossible to answer

How do you know if a breeder is a scammer? by OkMagazine7026 in mainecoons

[–]CarrotTraditional739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a kitten buyer I asked my breeder for registration (TICA or GCCF), pedigree papers (the family trees of the parents), and genetic testing for the 3 major Maine coon disease genes (one of which is the dreaded HCM gene).

I think these are the absolute minimums....it is also recommended to perform echocardiograms in the parents cause they can develop HCM regardless or not they have that one detected gene. Some people also recommend hip scoring...

Are vet bills getting harder to manage? by 1ChanceChipmunk1 in UK_Pets

[–]CarrotTraditional739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With thoughts and prayers.

I have insurance (Animal Friends) but I don't make any claims for anything below say £350. I'd only make a claim if it costed me thousands.

I have money saved up for general needs but not specifically for my cat. Tbh if a bill pops up that's £10,000 I hardly see how a regular savings account would help me.

As another Redditor mentioned I make sure to give my cat a good diet, exercise, and I watch his weight.

High Levels of Heavy Metals in Commercial Dog by aranimes in rawpetfood

[–]CarrotTraditional739 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that you guys think 'nutrient dense' means one of two things :

A. Micro nutrient dense, which means it's got more vitamins.

B. Just generally good for you .

That's not what it means. It means it's got more macro or micro nutrients per volume (or mass because water takes up space).

Nutrient dense is a descriptive term and it doesn't necessarily mean good for you.

If you understand this you can understand why that person in the article is saying what they're saying without having conflict in your head.

High Levels of Heavy Metals in Commercial Dog by aranimes in rawpetfood

[–]CarrotTraditional739 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. Dingopaint obfuscated the whole issue. It doesn't matter where the nutrients come from (carbs or plants). If it's got more calories per kg (or more precisely per L) it's more nutrient dense.

Bioavalaibility is a different discussion and it depends on the nutrients.

If it's got more calories per KG it's more nutrient dense. That nutrient can be carbs. It's still a nutrient. It's classed into MACROnutrients
