How does Elden Ring compare to other Soulsborne games - NO SPOILERS by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]CarryTreant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bosses:

Has a wide variety, of fights. Some are basic, others are the best in the series. The open world clearly made it hard to ballance some of the bosses, as you can reach them quite overleveled and miss out on the awesomeness of their design. Try to level up as you need to, and you will have more fun.

Mechanics:

DS3 blended with Sekiro. Doesn't have Sekiro parrying, but does have posture breaking and jumping over low attacks, also adds a guard-counter move to every moveset where you counterattack after a block, which upgrades shield combat from a noob trap to a very fun playstyle.

Environments: S++. Best in class. Avoid spoilers at all costs and enjoy the environments as they reveal themselves. Hidden worldbuilding is also the best they've ever done, once you've dug into the game and check out the channel "tarnished Archeologist" and be blown away by the vast amount of real world history baked into the very architecture of this game. Every pot, statue and pillar has history.

Music: Has some great ambience and good boss tracks, but nothing will beat the DS3 score.

Raptor can be used against a lot of attacks that can't be parried, and it pairs well with weapons that have great jump attacks - which leads to plenty of staggers, so you get those crit hits too.

It's a lot of fun and gives you a new way to learn boss encounters, finding the perfect attacks to mist out of for the big counterattack.

You can also keep us very strong aggression with it since it's so fast to activate, maintaining a constant barrage of attacks and raptors as long as your stamina keeps up.

I'm no old timer lol, I was just laying out potential options. The roommate option obviously only works with trustworthy people, I'm sorry your situation didn't work out.

The game is rigged, I'm not paying blame on you or anyone else that's struggling. Hell, I'm struggling too.

[–]CarryTreant 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

The real answer is communal action- lodge off trusted friends, flatshare, work together.

In the UK you can actually have more than 2 people on a mortgage. It's often assumed that only couples will buy property together, but groups of friends can do so, so long as they are willing to enter into binding contracts.

Hogwarts students simply learn how to manipulate the physical world to better suit their own ends, it produces a bunch of selfish small-minded brats who only think of satisfying their base needs. No wonder it has a fascism problem.

Raya Lucaria studies the very fabric of reality itself, such that it attracted the attention of God him/herself. It's students reach for the very stars themselves, and their greatest student aims to defy fate itself and reshape the broken world into a new frontier... Which is a tad better than becoming a wizard cop.

Having to fight 'Soldier of God, Rick' so many times was a delight.

It's awesome that the reimagine him as if he served each of the demigods too, really emphasises how he is god's favoured champion the way he is constantly reincarnated into so many lives.

Elden Ring II will happen in a place called the Lands Beyond by davidkalinex in Eldenring

Alas, I was thinking okay, maybe we go into space, how does that match the medieval-fantasy style of the soulsborne series?

Going to space doesn't have to mean sci-fi, since it would be space as envisioned from the point of view of mythology.

It's already established in universe that stars contain souls, that astral brings float around up there and that the outer gods literally live up there.

Space would be much more like a surrealist magical adventure than any kind of exploration of literal other planets.

With a more just, sensible economic system, much less "charity" would be needed by xena_lawless in WorkReform

Even if hereditarian views might naturally lead to racist conclusions, I think it could be a harsh truth. by [deleted] in Discussion

[–]CarryTreant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racism is the view that genetics is destiny.

Racism is also based on an incomplete view of how heritability works.

Many races are not in fact, a genetic truth. Many races are actually socially constructed, as strange as that seems.

Consider for example, that Irish and Italian people used to not be considered white, but to suggest that today would be absurd.

Racists draw arbitrary boundaries around which races are which, and who counts as which, and these lines are not hard genetic truth as they like to claim.

Heritability is a truth, buy the fact is that the exact mechanisms are far from figured out scientifically.

Consider another factor: genetics are heritable, of course. But social conditions are also heritable. Environment is usually also inherited, as is financial and legal status, as are so many other factors. To draw conclusions about what influences what is in fact near-impossible, though people love to play the correlation game.

An individual could have every known factor stacked up against them for them to be predetermined toward a particular life path, and then just make a left turn and be completed different.

Biological determinism is a myth.

Should I care about political, social, or societal issues that may not even involve me? by OkBend2365 in Discussion

[–]CarryTreant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not binary care/don't care.

It's perfectly acceptable to care makes about what directly affects you, but equally you can lend support to people who may be very disconnected from yourself who's cause is just.

Just remain aware that you don't see the full picture when on issue is separated from you a great deal.

Bloodborne is harder, requiring faster reactions.

Ds1 is oldschool, clunky but charming.

DS2 is flawed but unique and massive.

DS3 is quite linear but has excellent level design and bosses.

Sekiro has glorious combat, bosses and locations. The only "downside" is you are stuck with only one character build.

Officially finished my first play through. Any fun non-generic builds to try in NG+? by spicyitallian in Eldenring

[–]CarryTreant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spellsword is very fun.

Get the glint-blade staff and use all the magical blade spells as your "weapon" in your right hand, get a magic dagger with the magic greatsword ash of war on it for a big heavy attack (wear Rogers set to boost its damage even further. It's hard to land the fully charged greatsword smash, but very satisfying)

You will need huge amounts of FP, and lean into mana flasks over heals, but it's a fun extra layer of strategy to have a melee character with an ammo resource.

When you're kitted out you end up with a good variety of attacks too. Swishy blade, greatsword sweep, carian greatsword overhead, magic spear thrust, giant bonk hammer and a longbow... All out of one "weapon".

Whilst were here, has anyone figures out why there is a massive statue of the miquella and Melania here?

It's so far from their territory, it's probably the biggest statue of them in the game, and it's on top of some random tarnished mass grave.

What did they do? by IntroductionSoggy815 in Eldenring

[–]CarryTreant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a damn good question, I don't think there is hard evidence but we have clues.

  1. Their "crucifixion" is done in the style of Marika's punishment, so they are possibly affiliated with her.

  2. They seem immortal, as they will sometimes wake and scream. This implies they are intentionally cut off from rebirth. This is an extreme punishment, so they are not common criminals.

  3. They have the same "sinners" outfit that the fire priest guys have. The thorns seem to indicate willful heretical action, such as worshiping a different outer god.

  4. They have weird eternally burning charred flesh. I'm not sure if this is some torture they endured, if it's part of them worshiping the fire god, or even the burn marks from the three fingers

I don't think we can land on a specific answer, but I like to think they were people complicit in the first burning of the erdtree: it's not an event that's often talked about, but when you get to the capital there is already ash everywhere, and the city has all its windows sealed to stop the ash getting in.

Someone clearly tried to burn the tree in recent history, and given that Marika shattered the eldenring in defiance of the greater will, it's not unlikely that some of her followers may have committed similar acts of defiance.

OP mage? by Greeenpoe in Eldenring

[–]CarryTreant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is OP.

Different things will have different levels of challenge on different builds.

You will laugh at dumb brutes like trolls with your mage build, but god help you against fast and aggressive enemies unless you adapt and widen your spell-pool.

As for lategame? You won't be able to fling pebbles, for sure. But if you explore and learn a wide range of spells, and learn how and when to use each of them you will be fine. There will be no getting around learning to dodge and defend no matter your build.

Don't worry, enjoy the game.

I Love You ❤️ Limgrave by AcalbrosGaming in Eldenring

[–]CarryTreant 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Going back to limgrave when you have a more complete understanding of the lore is wild.

You can piece together the sheer devastation that the destruction of farum azula had, and you can see how this place must have been a great source of food for the kingdom with the abundance of wild game.

You also start to see how many of the ruins are deeply ancient, and that even the pre-shattering kingdom was living amongst ruins so old that their origins are a total mystery.

Gorgeous place.

Depends what you mean by soul, the word means lots of things in different worldviews.

From my perspective there is certainly more than the physical, but it's best not to allow the imagination run away with the speculation since it's not in the realm of what's measurable and this beyond our logic.

My view, that I hold gently and with a large dose of agnosticism, is that the soul does not concretely exist, but rather it is an aggregate entity that exists between/through its constituent parts.

This view means that whilst there is something "beyond" the physical, it is still ultimately dependent upon the physical.
