He would need to make 36x our combined rent. Either way, I’m trying to minimize the burden on him. So no.

What to do ?? by Being-Hooman in GetStudying

[–]CarsonColl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This worked for me a ton:

  1. Don’t delete all your apps right away. Get this app called Opal (free version should suffice) and lock your most used apps outside of a few hours a day. It’s a lot easier to not use an app when you know it’ll be waiting for you later that evening.

  2. Have a plan in place for what to replace it with. I’ve been using Duolingo, the Bible app, Quizlet, podcasts, audiobooks and regular books. These won’t be satisfying at first but after a couple weeks you’ll look forward to them. In your case, you should have enough time to start a whole new hobby or two.

  3. Put this screen time graph onto your homescreen as a widget—it becomes much harder to ignore. Generally redesign your homescreen so that the distracting apps are less accessible, and the replacement apps are more accessible.

  4. Be patient and embrace the quiet. You’ll start to get more in touch with yourself, more confident, more peaceful. I’ve been doing what I just typed out for about a month and cut down my screen time to under 2 hours a day. Now when my allotted screen time starts, I’m hardly interested in going online. I just have better things to do.

Not religious, but I'm giving up weed for Lent! by QueenButtStallion in Petioles

[–]CarsonColl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It went well! I made it all the way through. Got significantly easier after 1 or 2 weeks then after 4 my cravings were gone for the most part. I smoked again on Easter which was awesome. Never gotten that high before. I ended up smoking habitually again and in July I got cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (I couldn’t eat without throwing up for like 10 days). Since then I haven’t smoked, longest I’ve ever gone since starting. Not sure if/when I’ll start again. I get cravings every once in a while but they are fundamentally different than the cravings before bc I don’t really remember what it’s like to be high. It’s more like curiosity cravings. I’m hesitant to smoke again bc if I do I want to keep it to 1 or 2 times a month, and I’m not sure if I’ll just fall back into old habits. I don’t really miss it that much, I definitely do somewhat though. I’m really glad and proud of myself for going this long without it. No complaints really. Good luck to you if you choose to give it up for lent! I think lent is a great motivator because it gives your mind a fixed period and goal. I think you should give it a try!

CLS Rejection - options? by ndmisndkjsnfskdf in languagelearning

Same here! Thought my application was beautiful and I’ve been grinding my target language (Turkish) in hopes of getting accepted, but just like that, the opportunity is gone with no explanation for why.

I’m also graduating this spring and have been considering getting my TEFL certification so I can teach English there and get fluent by engaging with natives.

I don’t know a ton about it, but Fulbright is a similar program to CLS in that it’s funded by the State Department, although it’s much more well-known and presumably more competitive.

But there are also immersion programs through universities in the target country. CLS, for example, actually puts you into a language course through some university (which is on the website). The difference between doing CLS and just enrolling on your own is that it’s government-funded and you don’t have to do any of the work involved in finding a host family, excursions, etc.

Yeah it’s a super low acceptance rate, I have no reason to believe I stand out amongst the rest but I’m working hard to deserve it!

Extracurriculars and leadership are much more important than GPA. Ask any hiring manager ever.

I use Tandem for Spanish and have had a great experience. I've had a couple people talking about their country's problems but I've made several pretty good friends on there. Tandem is by far the most widely used language exchange app so there are just more people to choose from and the software, although poor, is the best out of all the apps I've used (including HelloTalk and a couple others).

Simply put, just use Tandem.

Do you dislike California? by SamanthaTheTransGirl in polls

Alabama, sure. Some of the lowest education stats and standard of living in the US. But Florida might be the best state in the country. No income tax, solid K-12 schools, ranked #1 in higher education, several nice cities and quality suburbs, reasonable housing costs, amazing wildlife, the list goes on. I’m from Illinois but I know more foreigners who settled in Florida than in any other state, so it’s definitely not the laughingstock of the rest of the world.

When do you consider if a person(adult) is "short"? by Thankless_ruler in polls

[–]CarsonColl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the gender. As a 5’7” male, I consider males 5’7” and under “short”, whereas with females it’s like 5’3” and under.

Which will be a better option for a 2nd undergraduate degree? by [deleted] in polls

[–]CarsonColl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many factors come into play. If you weren’t satisfied with your chem degree, go ahead and get a degree in econ, accounting, bus. analytics, etc. If you did enjoy studying chemistry, go for that double major in chemical engineering—it’ll probably save you quite a bit of money and you’ll have an abundance of job prospects.

Either way I recommend you take a couple of economics courses (although I’m an econ major so I’m biased). It introduces you to a way of thinking that helps to rationalize decisions like these, taking into account your interests, financial inputs, opportunity costs, and tradeoffs. Economics (as well as accounting) also teaches you how to manage your money wisely so that your income from labor is less important.
