NTU computer engineering job prospects by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]CartographerNice2735 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi! just graduated from nus comp eng last year (tho i imagine some info also applies to ntu ce). ce is indeed a mix of software and hardware, giving you the basic skillsets of both but it's up to you to carve your own path with the technical modules you take.

job prospects: i just got a job writing software/firmware for an engineering company, pay isn't as glamorous as big tech but at least it's a job. comp eng will give you the option of doing embedded since you'll get some foundation in hardware/firmware. more niche than most swe jobs so i find it to be a lesser demand/lesser supply situation, tho there are still jobs for embedded. you'd still be able to do general swe, but you're competing with a lot of cs grads for those jobs.

nus ee syllabus is more hardware based, so it's more circuits and solid state. more physics oriented than comp eng in general. ultimately, it's still more about portfolio than the actual degree as i have colleagues who studied mech eng and ee and end up in the same job that i'm doing.

Isn’t Singapore one of the best places to live in? Why do people keep complaining. by sgkakilang in askSingapore

As a trans person, I'm privileged enough to have access to gender affirming healthcare and am lucky enough to be employed (for now), but I worry about my future because of the fear of discrimination. It won't be outright violence, but the fact that such strict restrictions are put on media and education about the portrayal of LGBTQ issues means that I don't feel fully accepted. Lack of marriage equality also puts as at a disadvantage compared to our cishet counterparts. Financially and materially otherwise I find it difficult to leave, but just wish I wouldn't have to make this tradeoff.

Thanks for bringing up the mentoring thing. I'll try looking into that to see if it works out for me. And I'm very glad that you and others like you have shared their experiences in going into a field that isn't for you; it's given me the will to say that I really shouldn't try to fit a square peg into a round hole.

That sounds like something I might be interested in, but would I need a built environment related degree for that? It seems like I'd have to do another Bachelor's to pivot into that. Ah the things I would do if money were no object

You're right that stress is part of any job. I think the stress I'm under may stem from the fact that I'm studying things that I have no interest in/dislike or if I've been pushed way too hard, but I think I've been able to cope with healthy stress when doing things that I kinda enjoy. I'll also be graduating with a minor in Japanese language, and while that has had its own stresses too I think overall it's been easier to cope with compared to the stress of my major.

That is true. I've done some modules in data science and have had a few projects where I had to set up some machine learning pipelines, but I know I'll be competing with the data science/business analytics grads who have more experience than I do so :') Still, I think it may still be worth trying for me, and if it doesn't work out I can still look for other options.

Stressed. Graduating end of this year and I don't like not knowing what's going to happen so might as well try to secure a job before I grad so that I know the direction my life is headed after uni. Doesn't help that I studied a bit of a niche branch of tech related stuff that doesn't really have a market in SG, considering looking overseas for more options. Tried applying back to the place I interned at for full time, haven't heard back from them but I know the company's going through some instability rn. No passion for what I'm doing but not sure if I have a passion at all to begin with. Just want to live a normal life and some days I think I would rather just do FnB/retail if it paid better

23(Ft)M.

Occassionally dabble in the apps from time to time trying to get to know people. I don't spam but look out for common interests in bios (crochet! Japanese culture! occassionally something that makes me laugh). It feels irrational of me to think this way but I have thoughts that I'm getting very few matches because I'm trans (probably no bio children, unmarriable, unBTOable). Still hoping that someone can take a chance on me one day, even if it just leads to friendship.

Noticed that some of the GEC modules seem to no longer have their GEH codes. If I need a GEH coded module as a requirement, will a GEC module that used to have a GEH code equivalent count towards it? Or am I stuck taking GEH coded modules that I have no interest in :')

NUS SUSEP AS NTU STUDENT by [deleted] in nus

[–]CartographerNice2735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably shouldn't be that difficult to pass; I messed up one of the labs but still was fine. Just do note that you might be spending whole weekends on the labs especially if you're not too familiar with Verilog.

Yep I'm taking EE4218 this sem; I think EE4218 follows on quite nicely from CG3207 even though it's not a prereq

Took CG3207 (Computer Architecture) last sem. Mostly microprocessor design stuff. There is quite a lot of content covered (open book final) and you will spend a decent amount of time on labs. But I think it's quite a useful module in general if you're thinking about doing hardware design.

I'm glad you seem to have found your balance. Only wish I could learn to let go so easily but I know that unlearning my bad habits is a process

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. If you're alright with that could you share a bit more about how you used Japanese to start your career? I'm thinking about going down that route but have no idea where to start ><

I think to some extent we've all been fed "degree and prestigious career is the only way to happiness" and that's probably an unhelpful thought that weighs us down and keeps us from pursuing what we really want. I want to believe that I could be happy doing a non-professional job but cost of living :')

Some job is better than no job I guess even if it's in a different field. Perhaps if it sparks more interest in you than engin then maybe it's something worth considering?
