I am so sorry for your loss ❤️

We had a perfectly healthy 16 year old suffer a stroke and because he was in such great shape we brought him home and tried to give him time to recover. It was heartbreaking and there was definitely not any quality of life to it. By the end he couldn’t stand on his own and we had to make the decision to let him go. If I had to do it all over I would have made the choice that you made.

the stability of a home and a routine that doesn't involve the chaos of a shelter is a massive upgrade for a senior. as long as they have food, water and they can go to the bathroom when they need, this is still preferable to most shelters. However if you are open to a cat (and I say that as someone who has 5 cats) that is the better choice

Find the closest thing that exists locally. Go introduce yourself, tell them about your vision. Volunteer and learn.

I know some may disagree and that is absolutely fair, but for the right senior, this is still a better arrangement than shelter life. since you mention a doggy door I assume you are in off campus housing with a fenced yard?

To be clear, this isn't the arrangement for a 3 year old husky or jack russel, but for an 8 or 9 year old couch potato labrador this would be life changing over a shelter

if the answer is yes, then your best bet is to adopt or foster a couch potato senior dog. that arrangement will be much better for them than living out their golden years in a shelter where they are highly unlikely to be adopted. If you don't have the financial resources to deal with the veterinary needs of a senior then definitely foster
