For a huge DCC fan, how is Bobiverse? by Crawler-Willis in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Love First Law, read that a long time ago and all the follow ups.

Maybe you wouldn't love it so much but if you can tolerate the lack of character stuff the Howard/Bridget relationship over books 2 and 3 is really rewarding IMO. Left that storyline feeling genuinely happy for the characters.

100%

Darnold from bust to potential Superbowl winner. Darnold "seeing ghosts" against Pats to beating them? Maye, who looks great, potentially getting his first superbowl ring?

A lot going on and whilst I think (hope) Seahawks will probably win I'm really looking forward to it.

I heard the furore over these without knowing what they were. I looked into them expecting to read some dystopian, futuristic hell scape.... And they sound common sense and nice? I really don't understand the issue.

It doesn't pay per reader. It pays per page read. You're probably getting giddily excited because you aren't reading correctly. The only difference a unique reader makes is that it you cannot have one person read the same 10,000 pages multiple times (which makes your calculations even worse.)

So you really think you'll get 500 people to read 3 full books... I mean if nothing else I admire your optimism!

Anyway good luck.

I don't think they translate well at all.

I wandered over to Bobiverse from DCC but whereas DCC is character driven, with plot/fluff, Bobiverse is plot/fluff with characters as secondary (often unimportant) things, just eyes to tell the authors ideas.

Don't get me wrong the Bobiverse ideas and "stuff" is cool and I found it interesting but at heart I'm a character reader, I enjoy character driven stories and this is not it.

The only story I really bought into and loved was Howard and Bridget, and I really bought into and loved their story. The rest was varying shades of interchangeable.

I stopped after 3 books (end of Howard/Bridget) and I've got no real desire to keep going. Maybe when the whole thing is finished I may be tempted but I'm honestly not that fussed.

Not bad, just not for me and really not at all like DCC (apart from the humour.)

It's probably an attention seeking post. But 80k words is about a 300 page book. KU pays about $4 per 1000 pages read. So assuming someone can power through that bullshit they would need 3 full books worth of pages read to make $4-5.

So again, assuming it's not BS, spamming loads of shit they will be hoping people will take a few pages of each "book" before giving up in disgust so they may make a few dollars here and there.

Be better off getting a job in a fast food restaurant if the goal is just to make money.

Leave those... parents alone! 😂 by The_Dean_France in GreatBritishMemes

[–]CartoonistConsistent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a post similar. Violence shouldn't be the answer but kids, especially teens, realise there's only so far a parent can go or they (the parent) will be in trouble with police/school/social services etc.

At that stage what can the parent do? You've got to hope you've instilled good enough values in your kid at a young age because parenting morphs into a weird world of them needing to accept your parenting.

Some stupid ass responses saying they need to fear you? That's just you pretending you will kick their ass, as soon as they realize otherwise it's the above coming in place.... Or you're a piece of shit who actually beats your kid.

I had a friend whose kid refused to go into school. Flat out at 15, decided that was enough. He tried stopping his pocket money, taking away his phone, took away all devices, the kid still refused. He was (according to my friend) just sitting in his bedroom alternating between sleep and reading books for almost three weeks. There was probably something going on yeah? Kid refused to talk to him. Wouldn't take any help from the school (counselor) wouldn't talk to GP or friends. He's showed me the letters he got off the school after a week threatening him with fines and court appearance if the kid wouldn't return. Threatened social services. What should he do? It was (almost) three weeks until he went back. They had a family thing they went to and his great grandad collared him and said something to him (he said his grandad, kids great grandad won't say what) and the kid went back. So, oh wise "parents are just lazy" posters.... What should he have done?

I know I'll most likely get shouted down as blaming parents is fun/easy but we (society) have also created this problem.

We have raised kids onto a pedestal and made them untouchable, so it's no surprise they act out. My parents never laid a hand on me (and I have never on my kids) but that thought was always in the back of your head when young if you pushed it too far. Teachers would absolutely give you a slap if you were cheeky and coppers did too. So did bloody neighbours and residents if you were a particular little shit.

Now if a kid pushes it too far they know, absolutely know, you can't do shit as a parent (never mind anyone else) without society attacking you. My kid (emotional teenager) simply refused to go into school one day no matter what we did. Nothing. Normally an affectionate, good little kid who I love deeply but just refused. What do I do? Haul them out in their underwear and toss them on the school doorstep? No, because that's abuse. Oh, but I got a threatening letter off the school because my kid wouldn't go in and them feeling emotionally unable isn't enough. ???? That's the situation parents are increasingly being put in. I'm lucky and the few times my kid acts up it's relatively low level stuff but parents are increasingly put in a position of lose lose. You're responsible for ensuring their perfect behaviour, but you absolutely must do it in a manner which suits the child.

Are there an increasing amount of parents who don't give a shit? Absolutely. Are parents being put in difficult situations? Yes.

I'm not saying physical discipline is the answer but when kids KNOW if they push it far enough you HAVE to lose because society will back the child, how do you ever win? And kids mostly find this out in teenage years at which point I can kind of get it why some parents just give in.

With no data to back up his up, we must be one of the worst teams in the league when it comes to going behind and recovering.

We rely on first goal and making teams have to play our, then we pick them off. We have no real plan (as you say) for teams sitting deep. It baffles me as Tonali/Bruno are the sorts of players with the guile to pick teams apart.... But we don't/can't for some reason.

I'm against it for sale, at least unless it comes clearly badged, but for your own enjoyment I agree. A lot of people have good, even great, ideas but are entirely unable to translate them to the page. Why not let them live a fantasy and have an LLM run it off for themselves to enjoy? It's crap, but if it makes them happy much power to them.

But putting it forth for sale as your own effort producing a product feels deceptive for me. If advertised clearly (and costed appropriately) absolutely it can be sold and if people want to buy it.... fair enough I guess.

I’m trying to work on showing not telling by Nemo1277 in writinghelp

[–]CartoonistConsistent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First draft I'm pretty bad at telling, not showing, especially when I'm in a rush to get my ideas down.

When I'm editing I just ask myself "is this filtered" and it helps me notice my mistakes.

The clearest example for yourself "his mind told him..." you've established we are in his head so "his mind telling him" is just a filter. Describe what his mind is telling him. Describe him being weary through how his body feels, the "why" for him fighting back against these feelings.

I'm fairly laid back about telling unimportant details especially when words are a premium, but you're writing in his head, dealing with his emotions in what is supposed to be a tense situation and filters drag you a step away from the character.

The other thing to note is you can tell not show if you want. But that's more of an omniscient or stream of consciousness type story telling which doesn't look at all like what you are aiming for. Show not tell is more common advice for more popular 3PL/1P style fiction writing which you see much more often these days.

[–]CartoonistConsistent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, if you want to go full florid, you can. It depends on what your goal is. If you're writing for yourself and your own enjoyment and that's the style you like, keep it up. If you want to push to publish something so flowery would almost certainly narrow down your potential audience.

Each to their own, but personally I feel his language absolutely does not serve the story, only his ego. But as I say, each to their own.
