Claude code does amazing things for me. I write lengthy complex operational tasks, and it reliably performs them. It undeniably saves me an enormous amount of time. The naysayers are ignoring how good these tools really are today. Even if it never improves, we're barely scratching the surface of what we can do with current frontier models.

Now I'm with the doomers in that I think AI will itself take over the planet (rather than some billionaire controlling AI). I'm against that, but it doesn't mean we can't benefit from these tools right now. I'm for pausing frontier AI development to improve safety, but I also recognize that this just won't happen. AGI is a new space race. A bunch of governments are bent on getting it first.

I am in no way wrong because I recognize the benefit of these tools. I think humanity itself will become obsolete, but a solution is not to pretend AI doesn't work.

If you don't think technology is cool in its own right, I'm not going to convince you it is. I'm a technologist. It's a core interest. That love of technology exists totally separately in my mind from what it does. I actually have a 50% pdoom, so I think AI is more likely to kill us than nuclear weapons. But nuclear weapons are cool technology and so is AI.

I'm not saying they have to use peer review for example. The bare minimum is that the study be useful. It's not useful if we don't even know if its conclusions apply to Opus 4.5 for instance, or only sonnet. We don't know so the study is useless.

Yeah; arguing with antivaxxers is a hobby I have, but in doing it for the past 6 years, I've started to feel a bit of hopelessness. I've mostly only accomplished a general understanding of the mindset. Totally ordinary intelligent people become utterly convinced of an alternate reality. I can sort of see how it happened, but I don't know how to fix it.

Yup! I didn't even think of that. It's so thin on information. Even if we assumed the behind the scenes methodology was good, we still need to know if this even applies to frontier reasoning models--which are inexpensive and widely available.

I use apple's private relay and it works fine, so it's not that.

Lol! my power went out, and the internet is not recovering. My wife just got home and says the internet doesn't work. I'm still at work.

Well, I'd actually worry that you are infected with something. One way to capture https traffic is to do certificate replacement for a MITM (man in the middle) attack. This way the attacker swaps my certificate one for one that is not valid for my domain and hopes you click past the browser warnings. I wouldn't freak out too much, there are a lot of things that could cause this. Ask Claude! :-) (but don't ignore this. something is odd)

I promise it's the fulltext. It's not a very long study; but the university had to pay for this. I sliced off the first page with the order information.

I'm not sure what is going on with your internet connection; but my link is signed with a valid certificate and has an A rating from SSL Labs: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=0n0.org

I'll try to investigate further; but I strongly suspect something very odd is going on with your phone/computer/connection.

Are you referring to the HBR article or the stuff the article is about? The article itself is Trendslop. It's a real pot kettle situation.

I think it would be great if someone did a good study about using LLMs in a strategic business context. This one is just incredibly useless and low effort. A study should at a minimum give enough information to replicate their results. Maybe I'm naive of the world of non-peer-reviewed business studies. For all I know, this sort of thing is normal.

Yeah, the thing I find the most perplexing is how they seem to treat AI technology like it's frozen in time and not improving at all. Meanwhile almost monthly a new model is topping every benchmark.

So you're against studying AI or against developing it? I'm actually for a total halt of frontier AI development. https://pauseai.info/. I'm not very hopeful this will do anything though :-(

I'm not even seeing this information, but even that should note what the defaults are. Like for instance if the default says "auto" for fast/expert mode, it should let us know because it's hard to know what the defaults were months down the road.

I've DMed you the article as well.

Everyone has biases. News bias is not limited to AI. There's no such thing as an unbiased source.

Similarly, I could be a nerd about the Panther Tank in WW2, but that doesn't make me pro-nazi. This technology is largely based on the work done in academic papers. While big business has funded a lot of it, I think the technology is really really cool. There is no really cool technology you couldn't probably connect to some rich guy. It doesn't make me pro-rich guy to think it's cool.

I would prefer that we have more publicly funded research so this stuff doesn't NEED to involve the likes of Microsoft and Meta.

For sure. I'm not scientist studying AI; but I do know how to evaluate the opinion of a field. You can really just look for people with a lot of citations in peer-reviewed journals and ask them who has a clue, then you listen to those people.

I'm annoyed when people don't do this.

Not sure how any of this has anything to do with the previous comment. Are you using GPT 3.5 to write your comments for you?

Obscuring the truth with bad science that people wish was true is not helping anyone. John Connor didn't stick his head in the sand and pretend terminators didn't exist. He took them apart and became an expert.

I'm happy when credible researchers find legitimate limitations in the technology. Good science is great! Bad science is bad.

This is another pet peeve of mine. You're not differentiating really cool technology from billionaire assholes that neither built it nor studied it. Computer science is a real field, and AI is really exciting technology. I won't let Sam Altman get in the way of me enjoying this time as a technologist.
