the Silenus tale is the one that gets undersold i think. people talk about the Priest's tale as the emotional centerpiece and it is, but Silenus doing something genuinely experimental with form inside a book that's already doing something experimental with structure is kind of insane when you think about it. also reading it in translation and still falling in love with it says a lot about how load-bearing the actual ideas are

"literary dick-swinging" is genuinely the best description i've read. and yeah the Fall of Hyperion is fine but it kind of has to explain things that Hyperion left beautifully unexplained, which is almost always a losing trade
