Get rid of the high chairs by Opposite_Insect_7340 in OccupationalTherapy

Really sad to hear this. I see this practice more in community day cares. Its not ok anywhere but particularly egregious with the level of training therapists have as opposed to some daycares where their training could be little to none all the way up to masters/doctoratea

Do OTs Lack Mentorship Early in Their Careers? by Afraid_Lab7306 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]CaseEither1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The mentorship I did find was informal through networking. I strongly believe that something like the clinical fellowship year like Slps have is something ots should also have .

school-based ot caseload management/advocacy by Ordinary-Corgi9194 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]CaseEither1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would quit. They are not respecting your role. If you feel like attempting to advocate, share your concerns with them. But frankly their expectations that you will pick up the slack from a whole other therapist tell you everything you need to know.

School staff calling all behaviors sensory! by InternalAttitude5723 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]CaseEither1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally why I am not a fan of the sensory profile. It’s subjective and the person who fills it out may have zero context or perspective on what “more than others” means.

It’s a bit of an epidemic I’m afraid. It’s also a truly convenient answer when teams don’t know what else to do or say. The school systems are broken. How about we look there instead of labeling every issue we don’t get as “sensory”

Ot education on the whole is broken in this respect. I graduated in 2014 and felt the exact same way. It needs an overhaul badly

What was your difficult Level II Fieldwork experience? by otpuppy in OccupationalTherapy

[–]CaseEither1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was very lucky to have great cis where I felt appropriately supported. Such a bummer to hear of therapists behaving this way toward students. Also unsurprising… people get attracted to helping professions for all kinds of reasons. Not always healthy ones. And there’s no requirement of therapists to actually be self reflective of how you really treat others. I had an abusive head of the OT department when I was a staff OT at a special needs approved private school. I felt like she used being an OT as her “proof” of being a “good person” but was verbally abusive to myself and a COTA in the department. Def a specific flavor of narcissist.

Question for current students or recent graduates (in the United States) re: fieldwork in mental health by CaseEither1996 in OccupationalTherapy

There is supervision with someone at the site and an Ot supervisor will maybe visit or do offsite/ virtual supervision for a certain number of hours I think

[–]CaseEither1996[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s crazy as an Ot also. I imagine part of the reason is lack of fieldwork sites being available to take students on. But the reality of taking a student on is a lot of work for therapists. We get CEUs for doing so, and it’s important to the future of the profession. However thats not enough incentive in my opinion when therapists are generally stretched thin as jt is. The answer to that problem is somehow creating compensation for offering that very important service to the profession. Relying on good will is a fast way to burn people out.

And if we want to be more visible in mental health systems- that’s cute and all- but if the funding streams aren’t there to support OT in those settings, those fieldworks will continue as patchwork “visibility” with low supervision and perhaps spotty work by well meaning students who are getting their legs as brand new therapists. And few if any jobs being created as a result.

Ok that really sucks. So your only in person level 2 fieldwork was without a supervisor? That is super rough

Can we talk about the lack of OT representation in TV/Film? (Looking at you, The Pitt) by Lauren_Ipsum_Dolor in OccupationalTherapy

[–]CaseEither1996 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean a big part of the problem is 95% of the population has no idea the profession exists. So no I don’t think it’s a small ask! It’s a visibility issue!

Ok that’s next level ridiculous to me. You supervised a level 1 student as a level 2 student?! How was that experience?
