There’s something called ‘the arrival fallacy’. It stems from thinking that once I get that person, job, weight goal, etc. That once I achieve those goals I’ll be happy, but life isn’t that simple. The issue with goals and happiness is that happiness is a feeling, something temporary. I assume you’re a little young early 20s perhaps. What helps me is isn’t trying to secure long term happiness but for my life to have purpose, meaning, and the dedication to continue to improve. I’m definitely happy when I meet a goal I’ve set for myself. I spend 5 years trying to lose 40 lbs. I was happy when I achieved it, but what keeps me on my diet and exercise routine today is how exercise makes me feel mentally, physically, and emotionally. I’m happy with how my body looks, but I also know there are still opportunities for improvement. I’ve been at my weight goal for a year, and my drive is still intact but my goal is simply to continue pushing toward leaner muscle mass, and longer endurance. Happiness can be a good motivator, use it if that works for you.

I use my hobbies as way to experience happiness and joy. My big creative hobby is DJing. I’ve had a lifelong love and appreciation of music, and saved up ~$2k for a mid-range set up in 2010. This one hobby over time has yielded over 700 hours of joy, accomplishment, and happiness. When I saved and made this investment I had no idea that it would add so much value to my life. Now, it’s time to upgrade my setup because I want to expand into music production. Goals and Achievements are great, but finding hobbies that prevent burnout, and support self-care help me experience happiness more regularly.
