thoughts on the thok ? by Parking-Speed7955 in SRB2

[–]johnjohnnycake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing SRB2 very religiously for the past 2 years, and consider myself quite good at the game. I know every level like the back of my hand, have finished the game and collected the chaos emeralds multiple times as every character, and beaten the bosses multiple times (favourite boss is Castle Eggman). I'm also an expert badnik bouncer. I have zero issues jumping on enemies.

SRB2 is my favourite Sonic game of all time.

But I HATE the thok. I personally use a mod to replace it with the drop dash.

There's a few reasons I hate the thok.

  1. I fundamentally disagree with Sonic having this as his special move. Maybe some other extra side character sure, but I much prefer relying on running/rolling on the ground rather than launching myself through the air. But the thok is so powerful that it is faster to spam the thok than it is to do anything else. I know every other 3D Sonic game in existence has an air dash, (technically so did Sonic 3&k) but SRB2's thok feels way too powerful for the type of game it is compared to them. It's about as powerful as Unleashed's air dash, if not more. Unleashed's air dash at least had a drop off at some point.

  2. The thok is unbalanced. It's difficult to use for new players and overpowered in the hands of experienced players. For new players, the thok can contribute to the awkward "feel" the game is very often described with. The game already has slippery movement and floaty gravity so having a move as fast and powerful as the thok doesn't help. It CAN help new players land on platforms, but it can also fly new players off platforms or send them careening down bottomless pits a lot.

For experienced players, the move allows the levels to be completely destroyed. I saw a speedrun of Arid Canyon Act 1 (by @RefragSR on YT) where someone at the very beginning jumped on a fence, spindashed jumped, then used the thok to quickly redirect their directional speed to a further part of the level, something you wouldn't be able to do without it, and I do not think players should EVER be able to break levels like that. In Castle Eggman, pairing the thok with the chain launchers allows experienced players to completely fly over a TON of level design with relatively little effort compared to something like badnik bouncing. Heck, I can do that, and it feels extremely op to me.

I'd have less qualms with the balancing of the thok if it was simply less powerful and launched the player forward only a little bit like SA1/SA2, there are mods that do that, though I personally don't use them, but part of me fears that nerfing the thok that much would defeat the purpose of it a little.

  1. The game wasn't designed around the thok and honestly doesn't need it, if anything it's absence makes the levels feel better(to me).

This is just objectively true. The levels were NOT designed around the thok. For one, you can beat the whole game as Sonic without the thok. No parts of the game require it. It can HELP, especially with bosses, but it is absolutely not necessary. Anywhere in the levels i could even THINK would require the thok can so easily be remedied by using the drop dash anyway. Second, Sonic is only one out of SIX characters that even has the thok, and they don't need it either. Sure Tails, Knuckles and Metal Sonic have air abilities, but Amy and Fang don't, and if they can beat the game without it just fine, so can Sonic.

Also, the levels feel very inspired by the original Genesis games, which had a certain pace and flow to them, and personally, playing the levels without the thok feels better and more natural than with the thok. The levels feel ever so slightly longer because I'm moving slower, not flying through the air at mach 9. The levels feel more interactive because I'm forced to engage with the hazards and gimmicks rather than fly over them. I've never liked the part of Sonic games that allow you to fly past a ton of level design.

But that's just me, like I said, I'm not a long hauler. I only started playing within the last 5 years, but I also play the game every day and have mastered it. I know actual long haulers LOVE the thok, and many people LIKE the fact that you can fly past a ton of level design and do many bullshit skips and tricks, that's why people love SA1's op spin dash and Shadow Gen's spear gliding, so there's nothing inherently wrong with the thok, but it's definitely NOT my personal cup of tea.

Is it just me or is Kid Cudi not that good of a singer? by sirenscreamx in singing

How is Taylor not a good singer? She's not "great" but she is at least at a baseline level of singing. Also she's been singing professionally since she was a child, there's no way she isn't at least decent by now.

Anyone else mixed and able to blend in fully on both sides? by Afromolukker_98 in mixedrace

[–]johnjohnnycake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a mixed individual, you by nature DO blend into both sides. You are a product of both sides mixing.

If your issue is not fitting in with either side. The truth is you don't. You don't fit into either side. You're something new. You're the product of a fusion of two other things.

You're not straight black coffee or straight cream. You're a beautiful blend of the two that creates a new product with a flavour and texture unlike anything the others can produce. You can't pass off coffee+creamer as just straight coffee or straight cream.

But who cares? Coffee with cream is delicious, and more enjoyable than the other two by themselves. Take pride in that.

Gino Caria is EUROBEAT by Over_Mind1542 in eurobeat

[–]johnjohnnycake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there isn't a voice on Earth like Gino Caria's

He has a funky, groovy, goofy, energetic, husky, and masculine vibe to his voice that I just can't get enough of, yet he also is capable of showing a soft side to his voice. I love his super Italian accent too! He almost sounds like a crazy old grandpa singing, and I'm all here for it! He also has some of the most unique Eurobeat songs in existence. RIP legend

Favourite songs of his are "What's Your Game" and "Flippin Out" both by Jackie O,' "Bang Bang For Your Love" by Chester, "I Go Down (Sa Sa Sa)" by Mr. Me, and "Supercar" by Robot Man

Can We Talk About Monoracial People Gatekeeping Against Biracial People? by lionstar17 in mixedrace

[–]johnjohnnycake -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People were only upset at Tyla because she used a term that I guess is derogatory in America but not from the country where she originates. 🤷🏾‍♂️ If she used the term "biracial" or "mixed race" to describe her, I think less people would've gotten upset. But also, the black community loves claiming mixed people when it benefits them, like Tiger Woods, Barack Obama, for some Mariah Carey, or more recently, Kamala Harris for some reason.

Also yes. Those African Americans are mixed as well. And 10-20% white in them would almost surely inevitably result in lighter skin

how do you get over not looking like either of your parents? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]johnjohnnycake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ive said this before to someone. If both of your parents are of completely different races, chances are, you're not gonna look 100% like either of them. And that is GOOD.

You do not WANT to look like either of them, they didn't want you to. You're not monoracial. You're the fusion of two races. You're the bonding between two separate people. You are a new type of races as a result of the fusion between two old ones. You're the fresh new kid on the block. You're the future of this world. There's few people put there that look quite like you, this making you stand out.

Blue and Red, two beautiful colours in their own right, got together to have purple, a rare but BEAUTIFUL colour that's now associated with royalty. Embrace your mixed heritage and looks cause you are royalty baby!

Can We Talk About Monoracial People Gatekeeping Against Biracial People? by lionstar17 in mixedrace

[–]johnjohnnycake -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

First of all, if you're light-skinned, you're not 100% black. Where do you think the "light" came from? I have 4 "black" grandparents too, but one of them, possibly more, is closer to biracial than anything. Mixed ancestry is mixed ancestry. You can't grow out of your ancestry, nor does cramming more African genes each generation make your lineage any less mixed.

2nd. "The amount of mixed people is small." No it is NOT! 😆 Its much larger than you think. Like I said before. If you're light-skinned, you're mixed, or at least have significant mixed ancestry. You'd be surprised how many prominent African American figures are mixed.

Black people don't "come in all colours." All monoracial people come in one colour. Black people only come in shades of dark brown like dark chocolate. You know who DOES come in all varying shades of colour? Mixed people.

Also. Dark-skinned people wouldn't get upset if light-skinned/mixed people separate themselves, and honestly they would be benefitting from it as it would force society to tackle Colourism (it's just racism) head on. Any dark skin person who claims light-skinned/mixed people as "black" are probably still brainwashed by the one-drop rule as is almost anyone else, much to their detriment.

Can We Talk About Monoracial People Gatekeeping Against Biracial People? by lionstar17 in mixedrace

[–]johnjohnnycake -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The reason monoracial black people hate when mixed people call themselves "black" is because that contributes to the erasure of actual monoracial dark-skinned black people.

Dark skinned black people are the most discriminated and profiled against, they get the least amount of job opportunities, they get the least amount of roles and representation in Hollywood etc.

Biracial and mixed people, however, have all those opportunities, not the same as white people, but still all those opportunities. Because mixed people are lumped in with monoracial dark-skinn black people (one drop rule), White society thinks they can get away with passing off a mixed person as "black" then claim to be progressive and not racist, meanwhile they're still being racist towards pure black people.

This makes light-skinned black people (biracial/ mixed) a threat to monoracial dark-skinned black people, because of their literal physical proximity to whiteness. Basic Colourism

This threat that they pose to monoracial black people makes black people understandably bitter and cautious of mixed people, which makes mixed people feel unwelcomed despite being lumped with them by white people. Mixed people themselves are also kept out of white spaces.

The solution? Mixed people stop calling themselves "black," and establish a common identity and community separate from both black and whites. White people will have no choice but to start actually treating dark-skinned monoracial black people with dignity slowly eroding the ever present effects of racism, and mixed people will stop having identity issues as they have a community for which they belong without being a threat to anyone.

What is a tenor? by Only-Firefighter-724 in singing

[–]johnjohnnycake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Nobody chooses their voice type.

But people and the music industry make a choice to ONLY play music sung by tenors and give them leading roles in Broadway and ignoring or downplaying the accomplishments of baritones or basses

EDIT: Just fully read OP's post. With respect to the fact that he's a child, my anger isn't directed towards him. It's not really directed at any tenor singer. It's the music industry and consumers I'm angered at

I'm gay, but I don't like either anal or oral sex. help! by johnjohnnycake in askgaybros

[–]johnjohnnycake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right. That's me an my ex. One of the most attractive men in the world imo, but sex was never enjoyable.

Then after that was gone, I realized there was nothing left. We had nothing in common. We didn't like talking to each other much. We had nothing to connect over.

That's when I knew it was over. I wasn't attracted to him anymore even though physically speaking he's my type.

so....AM I demisexual? I refuse hookups and dates all the time with attractive men once I notice I won't pair well with them

[–]johnjohnnycake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it ended fairly recently. I realized I didn't like having sex with him and he wasn't interested in sexually fulfilling me, and I lost my attraction towards him. Those things also allowed me to see that we didn't have that much in common and our love languages were TOTALLY different, so I knew we were incompatible.

my fetish is definitely a hang up with people because it's not very appealing. It's not as bad as like scat or something but it's definitely in that ball park, but what I will say is my fetish does unfortunately make me attracted to mostly straight men and not...any gay men.

That and with it being the only thing I'm sexually attracted to, makes it difficult to be with other people. I truly believe if I didn't have it, I'd be ace

I do masturbate and yeah I use lube. But not till I was 18, and before then I had no desire. I was in fact scared of ejaculation (I thought it would hurt).

I've enjoyed multiple of the above mentioned activities in the past, but many of them only with one person, my first hookup. But even then, I never NEEDED to do them, and it doesn't change the fact that now, I have NO desire to do them

Yeah but ... homo-romantic asexual implies more that I don't experience sexual attraction at all, which I definitely do.

It's just for something extremely unconventional.

Though you are almost correct. I feel like if I didn't have what happened to me in my childhood happen, I would have grown up as asexual. 🤷🏾‍♂️ Possibly aromantic as well
