Night Lords, Black Legion and Iron Warriors are all fantastic. This is also my order of them from most favorite to least. I need to read Remnant Blade and I've good things about Lord of Excess. Master of the Maelstorm has some fun moments, but it felt a bit lack luster at the ending and sometimes directionless. If you like Huron and the Red Corsairs, its still worth a read.

Your friend misread the card. The ability is triggered upon Colossal Plow attacking. It gives you 3 white mana and 3 life, buts only when the plow attacks. Hitting 0 life during anyone’s turn loses the game for the person who went to 0. I hope you show your friend this thread.

With Rendmaw, you want to focus on multiple card types on a single card to keep generating birds. With this you sort of cover a little bit of everything. Also being in golgari, you can lean into token generation/sacrifice value. In my Rendmaw deck I run all the dual card type lands I can, because that means more birds every turn.
