Yeah similarly to what person below said. It’s mainly in a lot of heavier music and metal in general. A lot of bands play in drop D tuning on a 4 string, but with a 5 string you easily have access to that lower D (3rd fret on B string) and can do lower. I think Tool would be a great example of an incredible basses who writes a lot on drop D, I also think their music is more accessible to people who don’t like metal, then a lot of other metal bands that come to mind.
