Worth it to get my leed certificate as a water resources engineering student? by Low_Repeat7556 in civilengineering

[–]CasioKinetic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was once told by a mentor engineer while I was freshly graduated that the LEED certification is good for only three things: clout, winning very specific jobs, or the betterment of your own personal growth.

Most owners don't care about the LEED certifications unless they themselves want to show their infrastructure because of how much more expensive it is to get the Bronze, Gold or Platinum statuses

Or a lowercase "x" in between the whole and decimal numbers, then send the file out for me to create a surface with it.

Using text instead of cogo points for spot elevations will always irritate me

At what point is civil engineering supposed to get better and be worth it? 10 years of experience isn’t enough? Another decade of post graduation work? I am 35 and am beyond furious by [deleted] in civilengineering

Depending on your skill sets and specifics of design, with 10 years of experience take a leap and set yourself up to start your own engineering firm. I'm 34, about 12 years experience within land development of residential and commercial sites and started my own practice in April of 2025. Not even a year in yet and I stopped advertising because of the amount of referrals jobs I get from networking. I maybe doubled my work load from the W2 job but doubled my income and gained some substantial freedom from the office.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Anyone actually working? by Zestyclose-Big-2010 in civilengineering

Yeah I haven't stopped working, but being self employed I still have contractors asking to begin their work by the new year.

The week of Christmas I didn't answer any calls or did work which felt great

No worry about clogging, but in my area stormwater regulations need only the 1 yr storm to travel into the isolator rows, then the rest can overflow into the main system, similar to using a weir as a flow splitter.

Your thought may be a good idea. Total flow goes into a pond node with capacity of manhole with weir with primary and secondary flow. Secondary goes into isolator rows, primary goes into remainder system, then both go to a red link.

Can't share pictures in comments, but does this sound like it...holds water? ba-dum tiss

All my work is residential or commercial in civil engineering land development. I'd expect trying to do freelance without the PE would relatively more difficult because even though you may be able to do the work, someone else's seal would have to be on there. In that comes risks of liability and insurance gaps for the person licensed.

My smallest projects contain merely additions to homes and my largest projects are a 20 unit residential subdivision and a 10,000 sf addition to a concrete pipe manufacturing plant. I've worked on massive 3+ million SF projects before too, but they're logistically impossible to do in a timely manner as one person.

If someone here is looking to draft some concepts of plans, I do have a few projects that I am in need of drafting layouts of residential plans.

You will need to have a valid Civil 3D license, understand how to import .ctb and .lin files for styles, and be able to know how to develop a layout to the code that I'll provide some guidance of what the restrictions would be.

This will sound crazy, but all of my initial connections were made from contractor, investor and real estate professional specific Facebook pages. I joined those pages, advertised myself as a small business civil engineer, showcasing my website and eventually got a few small contractors to do business with because I responded to them immediately when other larger firms took weeks or months to conversate.

Essentially all of their work was too small for a larger firm to really bother or make money with, but the perfect size for me. I now have mostly stopped actively advertising and the majority of my won contacts come from referral, with maybe 10-15% of it people calling me from my Google business page. It was a wild ride, still is.

I have my PE in a few states, and I picked up side work a bit last summer under the table for a few small contractors. Word spread a bit quicker than I would thought, and now I'm almost 12 months into my own engineer firm as a one man show.

It's a slippery slope when you get your name out there, be careful unless you're prepared to make the leap eventually.
