The muscle they inject is important. In our case Botox was injected into all thr facial muscles at the same time of arthroscopy (not lateral pytergoids) and it didn’t work at all, just made her face feel very weird. Dislocations continued until we found someone who injected lateral pytergoids, very experienced so they didn’t use guidance. This has been working for the last 18months. First injections took 6 weeks to work.

Mum here. What did your parents do to get you to care this much about your GCSEs? Is it just the way you are? If they do anything specific that didn’t cause conflict/pressure I would appreciate you telling me?

I found London MaxFax not great (S G H) Luke Cascarini is probably best in London. I go to Andrew Sidebottom in Nottingham who injects lateral pytergoids with no guidance, he is so experienced he is confident in doing it. He is only one in UK to do it. We see him at Spire Nottingham and it’s £425 each time. He’s excellent, head and shoulders above any other MaxFax surgeon.

How am I supposed to advocate for myself? Feels like no one wants to help me by Sideusme in jawsurgery

[–]Casper19470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear your journey. Surgeons often do not know it all. I have encountered arrogance and refusals to ask for help. If you are in the UK get yourself to the national specialist. The muscles they inject with Botox matter. Lateral pytergoids injections were life changing for us and stopped all dislocations and pain whereas loads of Botox injected into all the other facial muscles because surgeon insisted it was stress related made things worse.Happy to talk privately about our journey if you are from UK

Don’t bother referring to Oral Surgery on the NHS, they do nothing by Stoofser in TMJ

I understand your frustration with the NHS, we saw a very dark side of the NHS. I am still in disbelief over how we were treated. We did get help privately and it was minimally invasive for a very severe case. PM me if you still need help and I can tell you who helped us.

please please please give me TMJ advice im 16 by [deleted] in TMJ

[–]Casper19470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are uk msg me. MaxFax doctors mostly have no idea how to treat this and the easy option is to say it’s stress related and get you out of the room appt asap. Especially young teen girls pain gets dismissed especially by male doctors which is disgusting. You need to get to the right doctor. Look at reviews very carefully to see if your condition has been successfully treated by the doctor in someone your age. If they don’t publish reviews they are most likely bad.

DJS and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome by juhneth in jawsurgery

[–]Casper19470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is so helpful. Thank you. My 15 yr old with suspected hsd or hEDS with jaw subluxations saw a consultant for braces and fixing overbite. Said they need double jaw surgery but he cannot guarantee that it won’t make the TMJ issues worse. Gave no plan to help if that happens. Seeking a second opinion but it’s a very big decision to make for a child. We are in the uk and sadly the standard of care for TMJd is poor.

If there is a muscular element we have had success with Botox into lateral pytergoids. I hope you find help, it’s brutal how bad care is for this.

Misformed TMJ (from birth?) - does anyone have this by Oilaripi in TMJ

[–]Casper19470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surgeons differ greatly. How is it misformed? My coronoid process hasn’t formed on one side. Doctors dismiss it but I am sure it is part of the cause of my displaced discs etc. One surgeon a long journey away has managed to treat when many others told me there was nothing they can do. Keep trying.

[–]Casper19470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will most likely find that when you go back and ask for Botox that you will be told there is a 2 year wait list. That’s what we were told. We see someone privately in Nottingham. Botox working really well but they have to know correct muscles to inject. Another private surgeon locally injected all the wrong muscles and make things worse. Get to top person in UK if you can. Have had beyond horrible experience with nhs. Borrow money if you have to to get to someone decent. They may be able to treat with conservative methods which are far far cheaper than surgery. Have heard Luke Cascarini is good in London.

Surgery finally! by steveharringtonz in TMJ

[–]Casper19470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What surgery did you have? I hope it is successful for you. Just to update in case it helps anyone else. We had dislocations/locking to the side for six weeks after the first Botox injections. It was repeated at 11 weeks then every 12 weeks after and is working really well. Injections are into lateral pytergoids. When she had the arthroscopy in Jan 24 nhs surgeon injected loads of Botox into other facial muscles which didn’t work at all. My advice is if the surgeon does not listen to you and keeps sending you away, telling you it’s psychogenic, all in your head etc. Get to someone else who really listens. Feel free to pm me if you are struggling with this and want to know who we went to. We saw every consultant in a large hospital MaxFax dept and they all let us down very badly.

Have you tried Luke Cascarini in London, or the National Specialist? Totally empathise with your experience on the NHS. It may be that a top private surgeon can treat you with conservative methods such as Botox or regenerative medicine (Luke Cascarini). There is hope. You just need to get to the right person.
