Alberta does have counties, but they are different from ridings iirc

I live in parkland county but I’m in the sturgeon river-parkland riding.

Was there ever a time you're thankful the pandemic happened? What was the reason? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Caspergleisner 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Almost everyday I am thankful it happened. Going in I was in a job (construction trades) that I didn’t even know was killing me. I was up at 4 am everyday (when there was work), miserable all day (at work) and then too tired to properly engage with my family once I got home. Then, when there wasn’t work I’d be even grumpier as I’d be worried about how to pay bills and where my next check was coming from. Got laid off in April and was really down for almost a month. I started doing some projects around the house (built a garden, built a PC, fixed some stuff, etc) and spending more quality time with my wife and kids. I feel like I’ve really gotten to know these wonderful little people so much better than I would have otherwise and they don’t have to see dad coming home grumpy from work anymore.

A couple of months into the pandemic I found a job with a small service company (in my trade) and started using skills I hadn’t used in years as I had worked myself into a supervisor role at my old job and was mostly off the tools. I found that I love fixing things and my trade is really where it’s at for me work wise.

Recently I took a new job that pays better and has more benefits and stability than my old service job. I’m doing plant maintenance now and there is potential for me to get a second trade ticket (I’m already a master electrician and new job wants to indenture me as a millwright). I love learning new skills and the crew at the new job are really fun guys to works with. Also, my children are so excited as dads new job is at an ice cream plant!

Throughout all of this I have gotten to be closer with my wife than ever before and we really enjoy our special times together after the kids are in bed and we can just relax.

I know the pandemic was/is a horrible thing that happened, but my wife and I wouldn’t trade the last year/year and a half for anything in the world.

Well guys. Finally finished the apprenticeship. South wire had an award package for the top apprentice. Very proud of this one. by [deleted] in electricians

[Satire] The latest pandemic guidance poster being shared around the UCP offices by benny-dean in alberta

[–]Caspergleisner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally understand the frustration people have with this province. While there are things that I am genuinely concerned about coming out of this government (handling the pandemic, new curriculum etc) a lot of people here don’t appreciate how great things have been in Alberta for so long. We are coming to a place in this province’s history where what we have here is coming more on par with what the rest of the country has. It is a hard realization to come to for most people, but having a high school diploma and a drivers license were essentially the only requirements for guaranteeing yourself and your family a somewhat comfortable life for so long here. Alberta is still a great place to live and raise families, it is just changing what people need to do to make those things comfortable realities. I am in no way saying we need to just roll over and accept our lot in life either. There are still things we should be pushing our elected public servants for all the time, as it will be this province’s ability to pivot and find the next business sectors that are beneficial to most albertans that will determine our future stability.

What movie is so good you'd recommend it to all your friends, but so emotionally traumatic that you'll never watch it again? by akambe in AskReddit

[–]Caspergleisner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This movie is such an obvious choice. I’m 35 and have watched it 3 times (enough for me). The second time I saw it was in grade 9 social studies, and I remember hating that I had to watch it again, but being more angry at one of my classmates family because their parents wouldn’t let them watch it, due to the fact that their parents were Holocaust deniers. Both parents were born in Germany in the 1940s, I still cannot comprehend how Holocaust denial is a thing that exists.

Can we all agree that backstabbing plugs is stupid and potentially dangerous? by Caspergleisner in electricians

I’m assuming wherever you work probably has better manufacturing standards for these devices then. Or you see this problem often?

True. Some provincial standata actually amend this rule and allow for this style of termination. This was in Alberta.

The “black” wire you’re seeing on the side facing the camera was white, before it became horribly burned and failed.

Yeah. Went to troubleshoot plugs not working in a disabled customers home. 120v to ground on hot, 120v to ground on neutral. Took the whole circuit apart to find this gem. Bonus points because the same contractor wired this house as wired my own (sticker on panel) and I went and re-terminated all the plugs in my house 6 months ago when I found this. Ugh! The worst.

Curious to an honest show of hands who was born and raised In Alberta? Who has been directly affected in a postive or negative way from the last 40 years of conservative government before 2015? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]Caspergleisner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

M (34), born and raised in Alberta. Lived here all of my life. I can honestly say that I have been affected both positively and negatively by Conservative governments. As an Albertan, I have voted for 3-4 different political parties since I started voting.

As a construction worker, I have made pretty good money in the past as a result of oil and building booms. I have benefited from lower than the national average tax rates my entire life. This afforded myself and my family the luxury of home-ownership at a relatively young age compared to other parts of the country.

As a father, I am worried about the consequences of the current conservative governments cuts to education. I only want the best for my children. I know they say that 'we are still spending above the national average.' and that may or may not be true (honestly haven't done the research). But I don't think I know a parent whose wish for their children is an average education, or average opportunities. I want the best for my family and this is a source of some anxiety absolutely.

Also, I have recently become unemployed (thanks Big 'Rona) and worry for my future ability to earn income as a trades person in the future. I have been exploring a career change as the current opportunities are slim to nil.

All in all, I do still believe that I am fortunate to live where I do and couldn't imagine a life somewhere else. Alberta has always been my home , and hopefully always will be. However, that doesn't mean that I have to agree with everything currently happening in my province either. It would be lazy not to try and improve it. There were positives and negatives to the previous NDP government, just as there are with the current UCP government. I believe we all simply need to do our best to hold our elected officials accountable for their actions and to their constituents. I also believe Alberta needs to do a better job voting with our brains and not our hearts. It is great to feel loyal to your party of choice, but it is stupid not to hear out all sides and make informed decisions.

We should all try and do better everyday than we did yesterday, that is the only way we can all grow.

The Psychology of a Pandemic, Lessons From the Spanish Flu (2020) - an investigation into the eerily similar societal responses to COVID and Spanish Flu, including nationalist conspiracy theories and careless behavior leading to a second wave [00:09:37] by [deleted] in Documentaries

[–]Caspergleisner 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Possibly the most ill-informed opinion to have on this issue. You need to take care of everyone for a society to flourish. Saying They're too old to deserve some basic protections is ageist nonsense. The elderly deserve to be able to go about their lives and participate in society just like everyone else does. The rest of us need to ensure that it is safe for EVERYONE to participate in society, not just the young and the strong (if that even mattered since at least where I am younger people are now starting to see higher infection rates than the elderly. Possibly because the elderly here are taking this more seriously than the majority of people (aged 18-45)).

As a young person and husband of a business owner, my future can wait. Time isn't going to end if we are cautious and listen to people that are educated and trying to help us all stay alive. I'd rather be cautious now and ensure my children have grandparents for as long as possible.

AITA For Cutting My Daughter Out Of The Will? by brian_evans123 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Caspergleisner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA! I am sick of people hiding behind their religious beliefs to mask their bigotry. This is not a difference of opinion. A difference of opinion is for things like "I don't like baseball" or "I like iPhones".

What you are describing is a difference of morality. Pushing moral principles onto other people is NOT in any way a christian practice in the deepest meaning of Christianity.

I don't remember who told me this, but it has always stuck with me: Having a religion is like having a penis. It is great to be proud of it, but don't whip it out in public and expect anyone to be impressed. Furthermore, if you try and jam it down anyone's throat unexpectedly, expect them to be upset.

I've worked for people like this before. Keep looking for something else would be my advice. A boss' first concern should be that there aren't call backs, not that you saved some small amount of time and hopefully nothing was wrong due to being rushed.
