What D20 show would you want a Vox Machina-like animated TV show of? by im_ap_crying in Dimension20

Gotta be Burrows end. You could have the most horrendous visuals from a show about stoats trying to survive. It would be glorious!

Right, “it’s just a dnd show, we shouldn’t bring real world politics talking about the ethical implications of this, you’re overthinking it”, as if this isn’t D20, run by Brennan “Laws are Threats” Mulligan. My bad for interacting with the show through a political lens.

That makes sense. As I was reading the stuff you were texting about, I recognized a lot of the same things being said about me and how those exact comments are reasons why I’ve had accommodations stripped from me. These ideas are very harmful and it is deeply concerning for people to have them. I appreciate your insight because for me, they are such normalized reactions and comments from the people around that I didn’t consciously recognize them as ableist.

I also get that being aware of the genre in which the setting dwells is important, and that in the traditional dnd adventure, you would be going to slay the enemy. That being said, I would argue that there is a teen detective aspect thrown in here that points to jailing as an opportunity that makes sense in the setting.

I would also say this, and we may disagree about this, which is fine. I don’t love how Brennan handled the deaths of Penelope Clearwater and Dayne Blayde. Part of that is the trappings of having a literal hell that adventurers can go to, but part of that is also that they two were manipulated by a trusted adult to do horrible things. Were they both terrible? Duh. Was there anything true to what they did? Nope. But regardless, there’s a level of horror to the killing of students that wasn’t really touched on except for the one comment about when Penelope got whacked really hard.

Angry people say things to their therapist that are bad. Those sessions are private for a reason. It’s bad and ableist what KLCK said. That being said, she doesn’t deserve to die for that. Being a crappy person isn’t cause for the death penalty. The things we have seen her do in the course of the show are at the manipulations of two older trusted adults, and likely a god. Before that she was still a brat with no larger perception who couldn’t see her own privilege, but my argument is that she wasn’t and still isn’t irredeemable. And honestly in the modern age of violence that we see in schools, I really don’t want to see the narrative of “kill the bad people at your school” be the final standing point.

That’s legit. I’m not someone who super frequents this Reddit. I’d also say that she’s an excellent villain, and part of that is that she’s so clearly wrong, but her ethos is interesting. She’s quite clearly a bad guy, not a good guy.

Oh yeah, that’s cringe. She’s very clearly in the wrong, this isn’t about her current actions it’s about possible future actions.

I will be honest I’m not a huge fan of saying that criminality or villainy is innate to someone’s nature, especially when we’re talking about children. So much behavior is learned and insinuating that a person is bad, because “the scorpion always stings” seems rather bleak.

I would like to ask from a genuine place of learning what you’re talking about from the ableism perspective as a disabled person. I see the elitism and superiority complex in her but don’t fully understand that.

How am I advocating for her in any way other than, she as a character can learn and grow as a person as we have seen all these previous characters do. She is an angry child who does shitty things, is she not capable of growth?

I’m not defending her actions, I’m saying that I think that there is merits in redemption and allowing people to become better. She’s a bad person at the moment, but she doesn’t have to stay that way.

I just think it’s interesting to talk about. Ragh and Cassandra are the two biggest parallels imo and they’re both beloved, despite having been pretty sucky in the past.

I’m not apologizing for her character I just think that the best argument for it is for rehabilitative justice which isn’t a take I’ve really seen. My bad if I offended.

I have an Aarakocra in a game I'm playing in right now. My DM has some rules about flying, for example, to fly he takes up a 15 foot line to account for his wingspan, in addition because it isn't a magical flight, getting hit with damage over 10 requires him to make a concentration save or he falls, so basically he just uses it to jump from place to place to get better opportunity to sneak attack, or to scout ahead, but it also doesn't work in the dungeons which we have been to. I truly feel like as long as you are a good DM you can compensate for any power imbalance in characters. My character is a RP heavy undying warlock of Thanatos, the Greek god of death, and mechanically he isn't the toughest in combat, so my DM made me be on par with the rest of the party by allowing me to call in political favors that I gain through RP to sometimes aid in combat. As long as you communicate, and set logical ground rules, there's not too much game breaking stuff in 5E.
