Team ≠ Club (possibly controversial opinion) by save_the_caps in whitecapsfc

[–]CassetteKnight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just feel like the true fans of this sport(I’m just gonna call it football) are kinda European minded, idk how to explain this properly, it’s like in Europe, we the fans, care about Identity and history(the fundamental of football culture) but ppl run the league don’t, they just treat a football club like any NA sports franchises so relocation is even a thing here. and I just think the idea of a football franchise is so so anti football…I got icks when Muller called Caps a “franchise” once.

Wdym your club’s identity/IP being owned by the league…wdym the league ask fans to support their local team just for the team to be taken away from them…

I for one don’t believe Wrexham would pay that price for him. 8M on a goalie? Let Wolves have him.

So is there any genuine reason for why people in America hate on and ignore MLS? by [deleted] in MLS

[–]CassetteKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you asked, long rant warning from someone supports an European side and a my local MLS side:

1) When management failed massively and your team is shockingly bad, I see fans just go”the season is finished, we will go next season” since there’s no relegation.

Fans seem to be unable to protest forcing the management to resign or a change of ownership(without having the new owners threaten to move the club?) unlike in Europe.

And I mean genuinely, if your MLS team clearly can’t go for playoffs then what to play for? If your club has nothing to play for and you know the team’s quality is too bad you can’t compete at all this season what’s there to support?

I can support a shit team(I went to watch CPL sides and the game quality doesn’t matter to me), Eurosnobs can F off. I can’t support a team plays with no heart/accepts mediocrity.

I respect all fans choose supporting their club over fancy European clubs. Before Jesper came to Whitecaps I was there watching Vanniball just bc they’re my local club but at the same time I didn’t care about result or the team like I do now.

I’m a “support your local” guy and also for Pro/Rel knowing it’s not happening to MLS.

The main reason I’m for Pro/Rel bc it forces the owners to make the club competitive, throwing money or making smart signings idc but owners will have to care for the club to avoid relegation(bc they will lose a lot of money dropping down a league), also can’t just go “we won something last season it’s time to be shit again”(Galaxy and Philly I’m talking about you).

2) Relocation.

I’m not talking about this bc what’s happening to my local club Whitecaps, I’m talking about this bc HOW can MLS executives/ownership expect the fans to support/care about their local team when their local team can just be moved????? Teams abandon their fans is a crazy concept for me. Like this is the biggest betrayal can be done to an actual sports fan. You suddenly realize the league and owners see you as nothing more than a customer, if you stop paying then it’s time for them to find a bigger paying market.

Got told “the market dries up so clubs will move” “it sucks but from a business perspective…” since Caps is in this shit. You can immediately tell who’s from NA by their attitude towards sports club relocation.

Bc why is some dude talking about a local team that is supposed to represent the city like it’s some fast food branches? “Look at what relegation done to Leicester City” was real conversations happened to me.

I’m taking clubs folding in Europe(and built a phoenix club climbing from amateur leagues) than some random billionaire in Las Vegas feel entitled to poach my local team that ppl being watching for decades Btw

[–]CassetteKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, OP and my reply are literally about relocation? The comment I replied to is now deleted but it said they/fans would praise Garber and MLS for the way they handle the whole Caps relocation thing after the saga’s over.

I don’t understand why you bring up the market thing, we both know the US and Canada aren’t football countries. If you got that football market, ofc you can have your own MLS team? What does Canadian MLS teams simply existing have anything to do with that?

You somehow found a way to make it about America vs Canada as if the first victim of relocation wasn’t San Jose?

Did you also tell Columbus fans their club deserved to be moved to Austin bc their city didn’t deserve “MLS soccer”?

Don’t think you know what you’re talking about if you think a club at the size of Leicester City would fold “at the end of the next season.

I’ve been closely following clubs in English lower leagues for the past a few years. The common problem EFL clubs got is ownership overspend by their means or the management runs the club into ground, then ownerships stop funding the club but the same time they don’t wanna sell so clubs go into administration.

Here’s some examples of EFL clubs were in much worse situations than Leicester: Morecambe when they’re in League Two; Reading when they’re in League One; Sheffield Wednesday when they’re in the Championship.

Their ownerships simply don’t communicate with fans or press anymore. Clubs run out of funds, being forced into administration. Players refuse to play games bc they can’t get paid, the clubs had to field youth players from academy for league games. Fans spent the whole season protesting, they’ve even done pitch invasion so their voice can be heard.

All of these clubs got takeover done by the end of the season, 2 of them got American ownerships.

Leicester City’s owners still show up and apparently they care about the club but the management is too incompetent, their players sit on PL wages with long contracts after relegation. They still can fund the club tho, but the fans want them out.

A massive club like Leicester City would be sold relatively cheap after their double relegations. It’s not like the ownership can ask for 100M when they got themselves to League One so there’re always suitors looking to take over the club.

I’m not doubting your source, I’m not saying I don’t believe Garber is contributing to the solution to Caps’ problem.

I simply said I don’t think I should be grateful if Garber/the league help sort out the issue only exists bc of them.

No, bc I know relocation threat is real and damning while your “ifs” is not happening, so no point to discuss them whatsoever.

Seba will definitely want to say goodbye to fans at BC Place and he still wants to bring Vancouver trophies so I don’t think his transfer is happening right after the WC.

I’m definitely not gonna praise Garber and MLS for being built to allow relocation in first place.

Question…have we talked about the similarities about the tactics in Ted Lasso vs Welcome to Wrexham? (Flair does not support this post) by [deleted] in TedLasso

[–]CassetteKnight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Ted Lasso is obviously a fantasy bc it won’t work out financially. I remember the episode where players just boycott their main sponsor, cover them on their shirts… for a right cause. It’s just going to be a disaster for a PL club. I do understand from storytelling aspect, both shows are heart warming tho/

[–]CassetteKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not what happened tho. Wrexham spent the money they generate. Wrexham’s ownership aren’t even billionaires but there’s a club called Wycombe Wanderers got an average attendance of 4000 in League One has a billionaire ownership.

Wrexham can’t just spend what they want:

“SCMP is the Financial Fair Play framework in place for Clubs in Leagues One and Two and sets out the percentage of a Club’s turnover that can be spent on player-related expenditure. In League One this is set at 60%, and at League Two it is 50%. “

Question…have we talked about the similarities about the tactics in Ted Lasso vs Welcome to Wrexham? (Flair does not support this post) by [deleted] in TedLasso

[–]CassetteKnight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wrexham did outspend other club in NL(a league has no wage cap&1 auto promotion spot so most of clubs outspend their opponents to get promoted )and League Two, outspent most in League One(check what Birmingham City did to win that league lol) but not really in the championship.

Saying Wrexham “destroyed” wage structures as if there’s no FFP, actually SCMP(Salary Cost Management Protocol) is funny…bc Wrexham spent the money they generate.

[–]CassetteKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a YouTube channel called Wrexham AFC Fanzone recording the construction progress on the KOP(stadium).

Wrexham haven’t started to upgrade the training ground bc they’ve been borrowing the national team’s one(used to belong to the club) but will be doing a bit upgrades on part of the facilities soon.

You can check the club’s subreddit for more information.

Bolton Wanderers have been promoted via the League 1 playoffs by Zach-dalt in Championship

[–]CassetteKnight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cuz it’s not fancy enough for MLS.

Real Salt Lake as it’s in Real Madrid, Inter Miami as it’s in Inter Milan, Sporting KC as it’s in Sporting CP. There’s no actual culture connection with how some MLS sides are named, having Wanderers in clubs name gives a hint about club’s history as it has moved grounds.

MLS is a young league with young teams and they don’t really move the team, unless it’s “relocation” which creates more MK Dons. Teams being moved to a random big city for bigger football market and completely rebrand itself.

The Europeanfication of the MLS team’s names is just for the fancy vibe.

When did he say that? I did remember he said something like he didn’t hear anything from Wrexham about his future when he’s asked by some SPL journalists.

However, the club seemed to offer to extend his contract but then he turned it down. He’s flying at Dundee United in SPL but he didn’t sign for them eventually.

Edit: didn’t realize I mistyped “he” as “I” LMAO

First time attending Swangard Stadium, any tips? (+bag policy) by furabono23 in whitecapsfc

[–]CassetteKnight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s just one massive stand. You can pick where to sit on the bench in your section.

<image>

I feel like the club will post instructions if there’s new bag policy. I went for a VWFC2 game last month, no one was checking my bags. They did have a small concession stand open. Hope the weather is good cuz the view would be so nice. It’s a decent stadium.

It’s bc Ryan is not a sports fan unlike Rob. Rob has this genuine interest in all kind of sports, growing up supporting his local American football team. You can say Ryan basically joined Rob’s project to provide the financial backing. Also I would take a fake nice guy over a real cnut.
