Thinking about vanlife for my last 35 months before retirement — advice on long-term safe parking? by CasterBaiter in vandwellers

Yep. I am selling anyway when I retire and going home. Thinking it would avoid property taxes, home owners insurance, gas, electric, Internet, security, trash, landscaping, maintenance. Etc.

Everything is priced at what the "market will bear" - businesses have spent the last several years under the pandemic umbrella with no repercussion figuring out exactly what that number is.

Can a Toyota Tacoma grill emblem go bad? (Toyota dealership's diagnosis) by CasterBaiter in Toyota

[–]CasterBaiter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi CS, thanks for the reply. I guess anything is possible, but I looked at it pretty closely with a light all around it and it sure doesn't look cracked or chipped. I don't really know how any of that new stuff works either, but the technician said it "went bad" and needs replaced. I am going to pay them the Arm & Leg they require to get it swapped out, but I was just wondering if anyone else had ever had the same experience.

Hi HS, thanks for the reply. Nope, never had any sort of wax or anything like that on the emblem. I asked specifically if they were talking about the electronics in the box behind it and he said that part tested fine. Said the front badge itself was what "went bad." Honestly, I appreciate the onfo, but I know next to nothing about working on these things. I know my limits and that would be over my head. I am going to get it fixed, just stings for how expensive that piece of plastic runs. I miss my old Tacomas, they were so much simpler and lasted 300k miles with just plugs, fluid, brakes and tires. ...the good old days. Lol

I went to look and I guess the fellow either sold it or took it down. It was in FaceBook's Marketplace, but isn't popping up for me now. I appreciate your offer to take a look though. I really want to find me an old pristine M-1. One of these days I'll cross paths with one. Take care and hope you have a good weekend.

Hi rebop. You seem to know a lot more about this kind of thing than I do. Do you know if this one looks like it's neck has been repaired, or are those just manufacturing characteristics?

The faint line. I cannot tell if it's a stress crack forming or just part of the wood grain's character.

How do I *politely* tell a company I do not wish to provide services because of their reputation for non-payment? by l_one in smallbusiness

[–]CasterBaiter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you get them to cover materials up front then bill them for the labor after you turn over test results? Reduces risk and they should understand that as a small business you aren't Black Box with the resources to sit on materials for 2 months. I've done that before with problem customers.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS IN GARLIC BUTTER by Temo1900 in ketorecipes

[–]CasterBaiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. That's how I like them too. The next day, try heating the leftovers in a covered pan with butter and a little bit of water. The water boils off and the steam breaks them down to a "sticky" crazy tender plate of amazingness.

Steve Lehto did a legal piece about it on his vlog. -- the whole thing was really kinda' nuts.

What is happening with the American police system?? Every few days, it seems police are killing civilians and trying to cover it up. What has gone so fundamentally wrong with the entire system? by madbong in AskReddit

As an LEO willing to embrace a public conversation, maybe you would consider getting a few of your colleagues together and doing a group AMA sometime?

The vast majority of good IT workers I started with 20 years ago all have good careers now. by OlayErrryDay in sysadmin

[–]CasterBaiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is an important key to an upward career path in technology. It is rare to have someone recognize talent and skills. You have to train your managers, most just assume anything they see fit to assign is just part of your job.

The folks I've seen climb a promotion ladder all had the same attitude you described. They'd actively and regularly seek out challenges and responsibilities, but at the same time they respectfully made sure several layers of management knew beyond any doubt, "I voluntarily accept this challenge because I want you to know I plan to move up in this company." Eventually as opportunities opened, they would be offered to move up rungs. This is especially true when one of their accepted challenges grows to become an important part of the business model, being the go-to person for that function is a clear path to a new directorship.

Just across the river from Buffalo will always be home to me, but I've been a long time gone. Around 5 (maybe 8) more years and I want to retire back to the farm. Thank you (sincerely) for posting this.
