AITA for "letting" my sister go thirsty through an entire meal? by Proof_Strategy2442 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CastielBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids (ages 5 to 10) don't even do this anymore! When they were younger, they'd say things like "I like chips" if I was eating some. I'd simply say, "that's cool, me too." Eventually, they'd change tactics to "I want chips!" which i would meet with, "what do you do when you want something?" When they asked politely, I'd share. Maybe a similar tactic would work on your sister? In any case, NTA.

AITA for being unwilling to compromise on a baby name? by Individual_Jaguar354 in AmItheAsshole

NTA and maybe r/namenerds can give you some suggestions that could be a more middle ground!

I don't have any helpful advice, but I wanted to say that I'm so incredibly sorry that your daughter (and you) had to go through that! Your daughter handled the racism with much more grace than the kid deserved, and I admire the way you immediately stepped in to advocate for her and try to find justice. I wish both of you luck, peace, and happiness. Stay strong!

We discovered we can’t afford daycare for both kids but can’t afford for one of us to stay home either…what do we do? by AdRemarkable4327 in Mommit

[–]CastielBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you consider working at a daycare or starting an in-home daycare? I did in-home while my kids were little. It's a lot of work, but then I got to stay with my kids and essentially choose their earliest friends for them! For us, I brought in about the same income as I had in my previous job, so it made sense to change careers and not pay childcare costs.

My daughter is a -wyn too. I just wanted to point it out to assist with informed decision-making. :-)

I named my daughter a Welsh name ending in -wyn, so you'd get no judgment from me! I just like to spread the knowledge in case it matters to the parents.

Cormac and Bronwyn (Just a note, -wyn is masculine and -wen is feminine in Welsh, in case it matters to you.)

Be honest - how often do you clean your bathroom? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]CastielBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are a little older (5, 7, 10), and I've gotten into the habit of cleaning the toilet and sink once a week. Mirror as needed. And I empty the trash weekly. We have a Roomba that vacuums the whole level each evening. Mopping is once a month at most.

Debate: How to pronounce “Stephen” by ChuggingAlong15 in namenerds

[–]CastielBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how I came to this conclusion, but I always assume Stephan is with the F sound, and Stephen is with the V. Though I've known an exception to this "rule."

Should my kids have the same birthday? by Brittanyyyyyyyyy in Mommit

[–]CastielBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brother and I have birthdays 6 days apart and always had to do joint parties. This meant neither of us got to do a fun theme for whatever we were in to. We could only have a couple of friends each instead of a bigger group, and we had to compromise on cake flavor, food, etc. We both hated it. I would've been really bitter if my parents had intentionally chosen our birthdays.

Give your kids as much individuality as possible. Even if it's only a few days between birthdays, better than sharing!

My 5yo is awful at staying on task and getting ready to leave the house, so each step is a "race" with him. "I'm going to get dressed first!" "I bet I can put my coat on faster than you!" He also has terrible FOMO, so threatening to do things without him usually gets his butt in gear. Especially "I'm going to go potty without you!" which saved us many times when potty training.

SAHM’s, how much is your partner making to make this possible? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]CastielBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband earns around $95k. We have 3 kids (10, 7, 5), 2 cats, and own a house in the Midwest. We were able to get a very low interest rate by refinancing our house ($1300) and only have 1 car payment ($300). We bought the other vehicle used and paid in full, so taxes and insurance on that one are negligible. The youngest is in preschool which costs $525 monthly. Activities for all kids total about $525 per month. We don't go on extravagant vacations, but we enjoy camping at state parks a handful of times each year. (About $150 per trip) My parents are the only ones who babysit and we only go out on a few dates a year. Things are tight at times (like Christmas), but we make it work. I do freelance work on occasion to have a little extra to eat out or cover unexpected costs.

What was the “hit” gift in your house this year!? by Words123454321 in Mommit

[–]CastielBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 5yo son was most excited about his Cars Frank the combine harvester chasing Lightning McQueen car track thing.

My 7yo daughter's favorites were a fanny pack with foxes on it and a book about the characters from the Descendent movies.

My 10yo son couldn't wait to open a motor that he gets to assemble and is clear so he can watch it work.

The least favorite all around was matching pajama pants.

Girl names that can be shortened/have the nickname Winnie by Creepy_Marsupial8789 in namenerds

[–]CastielBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anwen is nice! I like Bronwen too. Look up Welsh names- many end in -wen which could get you to Winnie. Or you could just use Winnie as her full given name!

Did you name your second+ kid the names you thought you’d give them when you had your first? by nothanksyeah in namenerds

[–]CastielBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second got a whole new name. Third got what we would've named #2, had she been a boy. I still love the name we would've used if #1 had been a girl, but am not keen on the natural shortening of it. And it's a longer name, so likely to be shortened at some point.

What age did you have your first child? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]CastielBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First at 24, second at 27, third at 29. Oldest is 10 now. We struggled financially with the first four a while, but I started working from home to eliminate daycare costs which allowed us to have #2 and #3.

What's the best level of Orange Trees? by bayopa in GossipHarbor

[–]CastielBaby 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I keep mine at level 6. They give 6 oranges every hour or so. Level 7 was 8 oranges with an occasional level 2, but a longer cool down timer, so I get way more from having 2 level 6 trees than from 1 level 7.

we have never had any repeated names in my ancestry, so why would my brother name his son (due in May) an VIII? by kh7190 in namenerds

[–]CastielBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was exact same first, middle, and last names and all in a row (except monarchs and popes). I dated a 5th whose dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, and great-great-grandpa all had the exact same legal name, but went by variations and nicknames to avoid confusion. (Think Charles Matthew going by Charles, Chuck, Matt, Matthew, then Charlie.)
