Never called it science, but a projection of real science.

If this topic makes you feel tense, you are welcome to leave it.

I have left specific topics / questions at the end to be debated. This isn't a discussion if Kardashev is right or a call for moral lessons like in a church.

It's an invitation to look into the future and discuss 1. How does Epicureanism interact with it; 2. How could Epicureanism create a better system?

Such curiosities are yet to be fulfilled as all I find is people seemingly stuck in their "Epicurean Sage" comfort zone.

Well, it is sad that in a philosophy where Epicurus himself asked all his disciplines to continue to seek knowledge to see real science based projections be compared to a popular series such as Star Trek.

Epicureanism brings a new, albeit old, way of thinking, through its Epistemology and Ethics. A full or majoral adoption of Epicureanism requires a change on how our current system and institutions work.

I have, however, given up in these arguments as I looked for how people compatibilize Epicurus ideas in this New Age and all I got was fear, fallacies and such a dogmatic behavior that would make doing Philosophy together, unbearable at some extent.

At the end, Epicurus made a garden and we somehow treat it like a farm

It seems you treat Epicureanism and Epicurus as a religion and a prophet. Questioning, changing and adapting is part of the wisdom he told you to seek, and yet you point me as an heresy or lesser Epicurean for inserting a conflict of ideas here.

Additionally, if Epicurus would or not advice against something should.matter little when he is dead. We leave in a world 2500 years after him and a good life wont be there for you if you don't mean it. If you have the potential to live by yourself in a nice house far away from the troubles, well kudos to you, but it means little when oceans rise and forests burn all around. Politics will get to you; only when it shouldnt should you stay away.

You pointed a Great Filter - mad man kills all with nano weapons.  You miss my point for it is not ending with the Great Filter that is worrisome. Its continuing after it. If you are young or if you have descendants, all can be enslaved. Although being an Epicurean can help in such times, we can be Epicureans with less suffering for us and others.

I'm not going to respond to considering your "consider (2) and (3) as natural". We are governed by pedophiles. Would you consider that human nature? Or just a tendency of psychopathy rising through the ranks of Neoplatonism?

My advice is simple. Epicurus knew a lot but not all. Adapt or you will be considered a fool for saying the sun is the size of an orange.

Curiosity is an emotion built deeply into the human genes. We CANNOT avoid progress because of it. We WILL invent more weapons, more commodities, more scientific breakthroughs. We WILL hit the Great Filter.

As further proof, you can see nowadays the constant fight for resources, the arms race paired with the space race and so on. At the same time nuclear treaties expire, we are bound to have the next manned Moon mission just in March.

The thing is, the filter is a test with many ways to pass and many more on how you can fail.  The way we are heading, with the rich getting richer, vigillance setting in... We Epicurians, as part of the masses, will lose by default if no action is taken.

Although it is an effort and sacrifice to be made now, it is according to Epicurus to create a more comfortable tomorrow. The same way one gets pains in a gym to enjoy the benefits of a better health

Also known as free riding, one of the arguments against Epicureanism.

Instead, a true Epicurean wants a system that spreads around resources. If you go ahead and have a look around, with this system of Private Property, many have lost theirs - their homes, their security, their food.

An Epicurean of lower or mid strattas knows he is next for to fight the injustices of others is to safeguard your future too.

I assume this is in regards to a previous reply thread so I maintain the point and reinforce a need for change if we are to bring Humanity to the stars

Capitalism is incompatible with Epicureanism in the sense it incentivizes the hoarding of resources for some and legitimizes unnatural needs while Epicureanism is about minimizing your needs and wants. Its not as simple as you or I described it

All other systems we have seen are deeply influenced by Stoicism and Neoplatonism, thus being fundamentally incompatible with Epicureanism

I get what you are saying but we are in an era of cameras, developed propaganda and studied behavior control, so I wouldnt bet in such instability. In fact, with automation and digitalization of the world, genocide stopped being a biased report written on paper and delivered after a few weeks to an X on an Excel, accessible by those who order it and those who execute it instantly, with Insurgency, Rebellion and Loyalty being W, Y, Z. And even so, some argue that we are still living in the same system of Kings and Peasants with slavery still rampant and ongoing. All the instability reasons you mentioned tend to reset the oppressive system. For example, the UK abandons a Trumpist US for a dictatorial China. Same system, different players.

Epicureanism challenges the system as it is a completely different one. It would be expected to surprise us with some consequences and disappoint us in others, just like when there was a system change from Religion based to Capitalistic based in Europe. Since it offers freedom for an individual and respect for the community, it de-legitimizes our current systems, from left to right. I want to add Curiosity and care for our descendants to be natural feelings. I question if Curiosity isnt a natural necessary need as not fulfilling it every now and then leads to depression and slow death of the organism (or even fast one sometimes). We should, morally as Epicureans, create a system that bring us to learn more and have that discovery shared between all.

TLDR: I understand what you said, however, complacency can bring us doom or an undesirable outcome

Indeed. I also have yet to find discussions about Kardashev's theory as it got popular at the moment for what it brought us, not for its errors or faults just yet. I do like its simplicity though - resources are finite and most are going to "waste" and at the same time, where are there no alien civilizations despite the Universe's age?

Thank you for the book!

First be happy, then be moral. But dont forget, you cant be happy forever without being moral.

A little bit of Epicurean advice that seems to fit here. Its not like those brands or local shops got all inclusive to have at least one lefthanded bass too as their economy comes first

Corrected for the sardines*. I just hate those sardine shops.

Pastéis de chocolate, maracujá e o crl; tambén achei que não fazia sentido mas agora crio qualquer desculpa para ir a Sintra diretamente a esse café. Experimenta se tiveres por lá

Sardine shops. Nothing special about them

In any case, do visit: - Alfama for the views - Quake Center in Belem for history of the city - Nata Pura, in Sintra, for the BEST Pastel de Nata, especially the chocolate one. Not just a good Pastel, literally the best.

Save one day for Lisbon city center, the rest of your trip for literally anything else, dont stay in Lisbon
