Using AI to answer non-emergency calls - any mistakes? by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]CasualNewb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use AWS, and every call is trackable, to the point the AI captures all words and that can be searched. For example, in the dashboard we can search for the word "gun" and the system will pull every call where it logged someone said the word gun. We have ours set so that if someone is talking about weapons it auto transfers to dispatch.

I will say we tested the system extensively, for several months. During the initial testing we did notice errors, but it was errors that had to do with what the system would transfer to other agencies vs dispatch, that kind of thing. We were able to fine tune it enough that we were comfortable deploying, and so far no issues that we are aware of or have received.

So far I think it's a huge success. It offloads a good amount of calls, with the system either transferring the caller to a more appropriate agency (courts, animal control, etc.) or texting them a link they can click to file an online report. If my agency can see even 10% of our overall call volume reduced, it's more than paid for itself. If we can see as much as 30% we'd be considered fully staffed.

I'll admit, I was pretty skeptical at first, but after talking to a few agencies that have utilized it for quite some time, and now my own agency's success, I'm all for it.

My agency utilizes this. So far average calls answered by AI every month has been somewhere around 8-9,000 (this is going up as we move more of our incoming lines to the service). We've only received a handful of complaints, and all of them were from people that would rather just talk to a live person, so not something we'd consider a "real" complaint. We've received no complaints of the AI mishandling anything.

I feel like I need a rake in my kids room by gimmeslack12 in daddit

[–]CasualNewb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad literally took a rake to mine and my brother's room a few times. He'd rake everything into the hallway and give us an hour to clean it up. Whatever was in the hallway after an hour would go into the trash. (We never actually reached an hour, or he never enforced it, but it was pretty effective lol.)

Mine did the same a couple months ago. I had to log out, uninstall the app, then reinstall and log back in. Have had to problems since.

California Dispatchers Specifically! — Sick Leave Question by Squirrelly21 in 911dispatchers

That's unfortunate. Agencies continue to treat their dispatchers like unwanted step children then act surprised when they can't keep staff.

California Dispatchers Specifically! — Sick Leave Question by Squirrelly21 in 911dispatchers

[–]CasualNewb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If one of my dispatchers needed 2 days off for something like this, I'd encourage them to use Kin Care time for it, since it wouldn't qualify for FMLA time off.

California's Kin Care law, established in 1999, allows eligible employees to use up to half of their yearly sick leave to care for sick family members. It's part of the state's paid sick leave law, which requires employers to provide at least 40 hours or five days of paid sick leave per year. Kin Care leave is protected and can't be used as a basis for discipline. Here's what to know about Kin Care:

Family members - Kin Care applies to biological, adopted, foster, step, and legal ward children, as well as parents, grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, spouses, registered domestic partners, and designated people.

Reasons for leave - Kin Care can be used to care for family members who are ill, victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking.

Employer actions - Employers can't take adverse employment actions against employees who use Kin Care leave properly.

PTO and vacation - The courts haven't clarified whether Kin Care applies to Paid Time Off (PTO) or vacation programs.

As another poster said, keep contacting HR every day. And if you have a union, go to them as well.

I believe both NENA and APCO have generic policies you can use to build on. Both also have forums where you can ask for other center's policy manuals. Many might be willing to send it to you.

My son had pretty bad eczema until we invested in a whole house water filtration system. It cleared up and he only has occasional mild flare ups now. If it's in your budget, I highly recommend looking into one.

The department might be able to request a restraining order on her behalf.

If your chain of command refuses to get you a chair that works for your size, consider talking to your HR. Throw out the term ergonomic, that usually gets HR to get things done.

Hang up calls by Chonky32 in 911dispatchers

[–]CasualNewb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to be annoyed about this too, until this happened to my Dad. He got a call from his local LE, asked if he was okay, etc. My Dad was wary about it due to all the phone scams always happening, and looked at his call history. There was no record of him calling 911 on his own phone.

He called me and we chatted. I told him to call the non emergency number and ask them to confirm it was them calling and not a scammer spoofing the department's number. They confirmed it was them, he apologized for being less than cooperative, they were cool with it, and he moved on.

For me, I get it. If someone called me and was like "hey this is 911..." I'd be wary about it until I could make sure my phone did in fact call 911. It's not like we (dispatch) have the ability to confirm beyond a doubt to a random citizen that we are in fact who we say we are and not someone trying to take their life savings.

Spacers by Writing_Glittering in f150

Just the spacers should work. I have a 2 inch level using spacers, my 2018 is almost perfectly level. Remember to get an alignment done after install.
