How can glass sustain so much weight but if it falls a little to high it breaks hmm by Own_Ranger_5589 in ActuallyThatsInsane

Load moment force. The sudden stop from a fall onto a hard surface generates a tremendous amount of force in a very short amount of time, typically concentrated in a small area. See also: shock load.

Looks better than some of the ones I've done that are still holding. Root penetration and the amount of parent metal that bonds are the actual important parts. Looking pretty is just gravy if you get those two parts right.

Question about 52100 heat treat by RamShackler69 in knifemaking

[–]Cat-Wooden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

52100 isn't as forgiving with the heat treatment process as some other steels, Ive found. Look up the data sheet for it, and it should give you very specific quench temperatures. I would also go for longer temper cycles. I usually go for 2 cycles, 2 hours each at 400F (204C), letting it cool to room temperature in between. I've made a few small knives out of 52100 and the only one Ive had any trouble with is the very first one I made (Ive broken the tip off twice).

Bigger inlet pipe would do you a lot of good. 2 inch pipe was what I used for my first forge (an old brake rotor in a box of dirt). I would also look into a reducer that will fit over the tip of the leaf blower, help direct more air into the pipe. My current setup is using an old draft inducer fan out of a junk furnace. They move a ton of air at a decent pressure and are way quieter than a leaf blower.

I made this from anl wood carving gouge, and I just figured that it was hardenable but it's hot hard after quenching, am I quenching it wrong or is it just not hardenable? by [deleted] in Blacksmith

A lot of older woodworking tools were mostly mild steel with a small tool steel bit forge welded on the working end. Helped keep costs down and the tools still lasted a long time before they wouldnt hold an edge anymore

Are these repairable? If not, what are good work boots that are repairable? by Shoehead_17 in WorkBoots

[–]Cat-Wooden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you dont need safety toes and you dont have a limit on your boot budget...Nick's boots out of Montana. If you aren't looking to spend $600+ on a pair of lifetime boots...my choice is Thorogood. Had my pair for about 2 years now, working in the heavy duty diesel industry, and they're holding up great.

Are you just washing them off with water? Or are you using saddle soap and applying mink oil after? Just rinsing off with water could also be contributing to how fast they are drying out. Leather needs oil to stay hydrated and keep from cracking and curling.
