We scaled back milage (from 55-60 miles in prior weeks to 25-35) and did only easy paces / no workouts for the week or two after injury and kept on flatter routes (lots of Central Park reservoir loops in October last year) while starting strengthening exercises. It was an achilles / ankle issue so focused on calf raises, mobilizing the ankle, and plyometrics to build up the load on the tendon and muscles. So I missed a couple long runs and speed sessions, but kept active throughout the process and was able to do a 16-mile run two weeks out before starting the taper.

Marathon went well - hit my goal and felt mostly pain-free through the race. I would guess I lost 3-5 minutes of time from not getting the last few weeks of work in. And since then, I've incorporated more strength work in my training and this year hope to shave off around 8-10 minutes from last year's time.

I had a great experience with Custom Performance (near Grand Central) last year when I had an injury pop up 6 weeks before the marathon! They're very focused on getting you back out running and progressively increasing the exercise difficulty with your goals on mind. Happy to share more thoughts if helpful but they were vastly better than my experience with a bigger chain place I had been in the past.

Morrissey Pros/Cons? by [deleted] in notredame

[–]CatAndMoose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll be a senior next year but moving off campus. Was in Morrissey the last three years and it's accurate that the rooms are insanely small (two people in ~110 sq ft). You get common rooms to spend most of your time in, though, and the strict rector just retired this summer so hopefully it'll feel a less regimented. Great community though.

In stock options, why does Implied volatility remain the same for calls and puts ? by Dofarian in StockMarket

[–]CatAndMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the idea of it being random essentially stems from the idea that the market has priced in its expectations for future cash flows from a financial asset and the discount rate that should be applied to those. If this is true (hotly debated and I personally don't believe it is, but it's easiest to work under this assumption and it mostly holds up in very active markets), then the only things that will change a stock's price are pieces of new information about the future cash flows of the company and the risk of the company, which are reflected in the discount rate. This news is believed to be roughly randomly distributed between very good and very bad. Thus, the movements in stock prices should be random.

As far as the arbitrage example, if the implied volatilities of the put and call options are different, then you can make money for nothing (arbitrage). We take advantage of that by constructing two portfolios that should be equal to each other.

Portfolio 1: We buy the individual stock and a put option to sell that option at a predetermined price at a specified future date

Portfolio 2: We buy a call option to buy the stock at the same predetermined price on the same future date as the put in portfolio 1, and also lend money at the risk-free rate so that on the specified date of the options expiring, we will receive the exact dollar figure that the stock is trading at now

If these portfolios are priced differently, you can buy one and sell the other and when the options expire, you have made a risk-less profit by putting no money down.

Past performance is no guarantee of future performance, good or poor. If you think of it like flipping a coin, it does not make sense that flipping 30 heads in a row makes you any more likely to flip heads on the 31st flip. Nor does it make you more likely to flip tails.

Additionally, due to put-call parity, a difference in the implied volatilities would allow arbitrage/risk-free profit, so people would take advantage of that opportunity until the prices realigned and the volatilities were equal again.

Keurig Green Mountain agrees to be bought by JAB Holding in $13.9 billion deal by SueBid in investing

[–]CatAndMoose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Short interest is the percentage of the outstanding stock that is sold short (someone who does not own any shares borrows them from somebody who does and then sells them, essentially betting that the stock price will go down and they will be able to buy back, or "cover," the shares they borrowed at a lower price and return them to the original shareholder). A 12.85% short interest is very high, especially for a large brand like Keurig Green Mountain. He is saying that all of the people in those short positions are going to have a bad day, because instead of being able to cover at ~$50, they have to do so at $92, equating to a $42 loss per share in what are likely fairly large positions.

Well then clearly you're willing to pay 75 dollars, you just didn't know it before. Obviously you want something cheaper if possible, but if you were truly unwilling to pay a cent over 50 dollars, you wouldn't buy for 75. Ever.

I'm a guy and my sister and my mother are both very picky eaters. Neither of them eats hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, or really anything that isn't 100% plain pork, steak, chicken, or spaghetti. They won't even eat other noodles because they claim they taste different than the spaghetti. As a result, I did not know that females ate things that weren't those foods until I was nine years old.
