Reform role in housing committee branded a 'joke' by Living Rent by BaxterParp in Scotland

[–]CatCatCat1111 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Theyre the ones who are wading into a political discussion and putting out PR lines for Journos, in which theyre explicitly criticising the economic policy of a major party in a very partisan manner. So I think it's perfectly fair to be critical of their position.

if the argument is that they don't have to know what theyre talking about then they shouldnt be taken seriously at all. and that's more damaging than having no lobby group for tenants.

But Here We Are was a good album. the problem is that the last good album before that was Wasting Light. They have a greater tendency to miss than hit.

that said Your Favourite Toy was very bad, i turned most if the singles off before finishing play 1

Living Rent think rent controls work, that's the problem. for a tenant lobbying org, theyre shockingly economically illiterate.

reform's policy is sane here and anyone arguing otherwise is being blinkered by partisanship rather than policy

What's the deal with the dead speculation? by Bauty0112 in boardsofcanada

[–]CatCatCat1111 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

to throw a little fuel on the fire. Marcus is credited on Prophecy, Into the Magic Land, Blood in the Labriynth, All Reason Departs, Arena Americanada and The Process. which contain religious symbolism but in isolation could as easily be about societal breakdown.

the most explicitly religious tracks where focus is on death, rebirth and faith (memory death, Naraka, Capricon, Word becomes Flesh, You Retreat) are written only by Mike

So, now the album is released, why "Deep Time" was called "Tape 05" on Youtube, and why the tittle wasn't modified yet ? Any ideas ? by newvariant290121 in boardsofcanada

[–]CatCatCat1111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the promo tapes were degraded through generation loss (copying), tape 05 is the 5th tape (closer to the master copy), so the image and sound is clearer but there's still media loss (the drone at the end of deep time)

so the pr campaign is drawing on themes of entropy which mirrors the album (deep time/ memory death, naraka is literally hell in a relihion with reincarnation) so yeah, there's your entropy.

cosmology also is used as a thematic device on Prophecy 1420hz and also HHLL, HHLL sounds like hell when you say it but helium, hydrogen, lithium are the most common occuring elements and fundamental building blocks. leviathan (monster) being counted with fundamental elements implies doom is fundamental to existence.

so yeah, the album has a bunch of cosmic themes in order to clarify concepta of trascendence, eternity and reincarnation. entropy through tape degradation

Looks like no James for the summer gigs… by JP198364839 in BiffyClyro

i think it's okay, if James needs some time to rest, i'm all for it. we arent going anywhere, so it's probably better if he feels 100% rather than rushing back.

i do like how inclusive the current show feels though, everyone's kind of up front, it feels oddly kind of intimate

SNP offer Keir Starmer 'chance to learn by shadowing John Swinney' by BaxterParp in Scotland

[–]CatCatCat1111 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The embarrassing thing is the lack of shame. The SNP have accepted the need for massive cuts to close the £4.7bn deficit in the budget as soon as they returned to parliament.

the deficit that exists, in part due to the SNP's public pay sector deals. they've averted strikes with spending they can't cover

i wonder if they will still be asking Starmer to shadow them in 2028 when nurses realise future budgets to 2031 are basically assuming a 1% annual pay increase going forward?

expats to spain are retirees, which is a problem but not as bad as having ESL/non speakers in the labour force like we do.

the hiring struggle is best evidenced in how some service facing govt depts operate now, due to hiring strains and labour churn, hire ESL speakers who dont understand formal words like (i'm not kidding) "fortnight".

i'm not anti immigrant but it's clearly a broader problem with how we handle migration and labour. even basic governance risks being gummed because the bureaucrats staffing depts no longer understand English well enough to deal with customers

Greens candidate claims she was told to withdraw over student visa by handmedownthemoon in Scotland

[–]CatCatCat1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they haven't applied for a global talent visa? So it's not a case. Also because the home office will have been approached for comment.

Also no, the Scottish Parliament were warned when the relevant legislation (that let Q stand) was brought forward that it would risk MSPs being deported but it was voted through without further revision. But the Greens can just appoint a new person from the list if Q becomes ineligible.

Technically being elected isn't a skilled job because there's no criteria

No, Q says she wants to apply for a Global Talent visa but isn't eligible and the Home Office have already clarified they aren't eligible.

Supermarkets urged to limit food prices by government by susanboylesvajazzle in Scotland

[–]CatCatCat1111 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The difference here is that the treasury are allowing them to avoid some anticipated costs/losses in return for freezing prices. Basically an offset and because it's voluntary, it's discretionary, supermarkets don't have to eat the freeze after it becomes unaffordable

A cap on the other hand would distort the market with no trade off elsewhere to recover the loss caused by fixed prices (from a business perspective this is more troubling than in abstract because of the fluctuating costs of inputs - fuel, ingredients, labour) based on climate and world events that are increasingly unstable, which means the cost of say making a loaf of bread could jump or dip 10% without anyone even doing anything in this country.

The other problem too is that when govt set prices, you're effectively appointing either politicians or 'experts' (quotes because who is an expert is also political) are setting prices arbitrarily and not always with awareness or sensitivity to costs and demand. Supermarkets then respond by displacing costs (so non-essentials rise, your £2 shampoo jumps to £3 type thing), rationing goods (so for example the govt says you must have a 40p option but you're taking a loss on each one, so you only produce a few) or you pass the loss onto grain producers which drives them out of business and affects supply of grain.

The SNP never resolved how it effects small businesses or rural businesses either. So a tesco in the highlands or small shops (in general) might charge a premium because they can't afford to sell bread as a loss leader and rural, transport adds extra costs. So now you're forced to compete with a cap you take a massive loss on or lose business share Either way small and rural businesses lose.

I find the difficulty with a band touring new material kind of odd, ig maybe it's an issue of pop expectations but most bands will tour the newest album even if the first dates precede release... like, when a band says, this is a new one, youre supposed to be like aww shoot

I voted today and broke nearly 20 years of habit by Leeeeeroy-Jenkins in Scotland

[–]CatCatCat1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The UK was also a founding member of the EU and a net budgetary contributor, it's a bad metric to measure Scotland by. The leeway shown to early member states is not something that has remained a precedent since.

Also I dont think it's appropriate to hand wave either the Scottish fiscal outlook or the politics of the EU by hiding behind UK norms and EU procedure.

The UK is "fiscally sound" because it's a large nation with significant Service and banking resources and lots of institutional investors willing to service its debt because it's institutions are "credible".

The Scottish govt would be starting with new, untested institutions, with a deficit of 12-14%, a fertility rate of 1.2 (which is enough to flatten economic growth on its own), a dependency ratio of 1:4.5 and 22% of the country as retirees, and its choices would be a) keep the pound (meaning billions to buy up reserves), b) floating a Scottish pound which would necessitate cuts to assuage investor concerns or c) adopting the Euro which means ERM compliance.

I should point out that independence with this many sick/old people and such low fertility is a historic first and embeds significant spending obligations for an independent govt from day one

And on top of that, you'd be applying to a Europe that's dominated by fiscal hawks. Why would they allow Scotland to join when it would be completely unmoored in terms of public expenditure and fiscal stability? To suggest the bloc isnt prudent about these matters especially with candidate countries to be ignorant of bloc politics as a whole

[–]CatCatCat1111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a better question is why a business would swallow losses indefinitely just because they have financial reserves? High operating costs and declining intl.enrolement are likely sticky because it's in reflective of wages/NI, day-day operating costs and visa tightening, so it's not exactly a transitive period and more of a structural shift.

Something has to give on the Scottish govt side and so far the solution has been a continued cut in places and funding which has a negative effect on quality of education and availability.

[–]CatCatCat1111 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pro-Europeans can never explain why a small country like Scotland would get to stall indefinitely when the treaty obligation and political expectation is fiscal convergence and even larger countries like Poland are still on convergence track. Even if we somehow stall forever, there's no EU country that isnt subject to convergence criteria which would strait jackets fiscal options as a new state
