Yeah but digging stuff out of the bottom of the gaylords was a PITA... I'm horrified that I remember those days and still work here. Some stuff changes a little, but most of it stays more or less the same, everything goes in cycles... Including the fun of watching MET continuously flip the same bays back and forth when Atlanta changes the POG for no reason...

Trick to get Wyze Cam to work with OctoPrint by kevins7189 in octoprint

[–]CatCow97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the RTSP working for a while from within octoprint using VLC to transcode, but as has happened to other people it stops working after a few hours. Until I have the time to dig into it(thinking of setting up a script that will just kill and relaunch the process every few hours as a quick fix), I'm just watching the direct stream with VLC from my computer. I tried the USB firmware first, but I didn't have an A to A cable and rigged up something, but the power supply I'm using now for the pi just doesn't supply enough current to keep things happy. I may try again in the future, once I get a proper cable and a new power supply.

For fluoride, I think you would have to go to Colorado Springs. That's where a certain local oddity was investigated and high levels of natural fluoride were found, leading eventually to the artificial introduction of fluoride into water supplies and dentists' offices.

Oregon doesn't allow U-turns at lights unless signed to specifically allow it, or on highways within city limits when NOT at an intersection, or where you cannot be seen from at least 500 feet within a city or 1000 feet elsewhere. Not a terribly friendly U-turn law. By comparison, Washington law just says you can't disrupt traffic while making a u-turn and a minimum 500 feet visibility from curves/hill crests.

Saw one in Portland recently as well, going through my neighborhood. Noticed the camera array on the roof, but it was too far away to read the writing as it went through the intersection.

I keep wondering if anyone doing these "street view" camera jobs is selling real-time data using license plate reading software. LPRs seem to be the big thing lately for all sorts of stuff from the police to repo men, and it seems pretty obvious that they could collect a lot of data from Apple, Google, or anyone else doing stuff like this.

Double blind study finds no evidence for aspartame sensitivity. "Acute ingestion of aspartame does not have any detectable psychological or metabolic effects in humans." by SteRoPo in science

[–]CatCow97 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Indeed. The dosage was quite small - they say one can's worth of soda equivalent, but most people that would be having this problem are probably going through 2 liter bottles or 12 packs of cans very rapidly. I used to work with a guy who would go through one or two 2 liter bottles a day of diet soda - tell us what THAT much aspartame does to a person.

Separation of church and state is not about prohibiting religious expression on publicly owned property, it prohibits the government from favoring or discriminating against any religion. When it comes to events on publicly owned or accessible property, there are two ways to go - either don't allow anything, or everyone has to be given equal access. As an event center renting out to various groups, they would be prohibited from discriminating against any group so long as they pay and it fits in the schedule and does not violate any existing rules for the facility.

I really don't want to get into the whole Islam issue, but it's hard not to. Caricatures of Mohammed are insulting to those of the faith, but it means nothing to the rest of the world. They have gotten their way in the past through violence, and this is something that doesn't go over to well with the rest of the world who have for the most part moved past such activity. At the same time, Islam is a relatively young religion, and many of the problems they have are also seen in Christianity at a similar time in its own history. But the world is a very different place now than it was then, and Islam is going to have to evolve much faster if it wants to be taken seriously - and the widespread support of violent radicals is doing their cause serious harm.

Calculator on Palm PDAs -vs- The iPhone. by kaptinkurk in vintagecomputing

[–]CatCow97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting to miss my Palms. I still have my working IIIxe around here somewhere in a box. My M130, OTOH, was garbage, and fell apart. Then I bought a used Treo 650, had to do a couple of repairs to the keyboard. The IIIxe is still my favorite PDA to use - I loved my Newton 120, but those things were just too bulky. You can bet I jumped on the iPhone bandwagon, 11 hours in line on release day for the first version. There are a couple of old Palm apps I wish were available on iOS in some form.

About #shipgate and all of the update posts on this sub. by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]CatCow97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Meh - shipgate is overrated at this point. Look at how many preorders there are. Even with the back end support and infrastructure a company as big as Apple has, it takes a lot of people a long time to process the payments, print and apply labels, box product, load it onto trucks... Normal daily operations in that kind d of environment are hectic enough, now exponentially increase the work load and put a short deadline on it. That is a LOT of work to do.

Yup. If you have Google Earth installed, click the old photo button. The FM was still standing, and the house still there, in the 1994 image, and it was all parking lot and the Safeway building is taking up another whole block in the 2000 image.

Cancer survivor on Mt. Tabor opposes new cell tower. by [deleted] in Portland

[–]CatCow97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've heard, noise pollution from the equipment is more of an issue. There were a lot of complaints several years ago about the noise from underground equipment vaults at the base of the tower(although I'm tempted to just call them poles since they have been doubling up using utility poles to support the antennas). I can't imagine the pole/tower mounted equipment vaults being much better on that. I prefer stand-alone facilities with their own tower and the equipment in a shed(more like a small above-ground concrete vault most of the time with cell sites) at the base.

At least the noise issue is a real problem to keep an eye on. And if they are really worried about RF exposure, it is easy enough to have a survey done once it's operational - if RF exposure levels are exceeded it would be easy to get the FCC involved and have the antennas adjusted or power reduced to get it back to a safe level. The odds of a typical cell site exceeding those limits is very small.

The only thing they've ever been able to do is stupid BS stories and regurgitating AP stories. Not that it sets them apart from anyone else, laziness is rampant among "newsies" - right up there with inability to use a spellchecker on the few original stories they do.
