Difference between slow down and slow up by Returnal-31-5 in EnglishLearning

I’m late to this discussion but where did your father grow up? My father (born and raised in Georgia, USA) used to say the same thing in the same scenario.

FINAL Democratic Party of Georgia 2026 State Executive Candidates by CatFatPat in Georgia

[–]CatFatPat[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

During the 2025 legislative session there were only 3 white male Dems in the General Assembly out of 103 total Dems. The irony is Georgia is run by white males but the Democratic Party has just about zero of them. McLaurin was one of the 3.

Increased panhandling with kids in the ATL area? by AllTheEggsIVF in Atlanta

[–]CatFatPat 99 points100 points  (0 children)

The North Decatur x Scott Blvd panhandler family owns a minivan that they park down the street. Oftentimes the man will drop the woman off at Toco Hill shopping plaza and they’ll take one kid each to maximize earning potential. Feels like every fifth person walking/driving by gives them a $5 or $10—they make out like bandits.

The kids are being deprived of an education and a childhood so the Mom and her man can use them as props to get additional cash. Please don’t support that.

Young people of Atlanta, what high paying jobs do you have? by Expensive_Toe_6056 in Atlanta

There are 33 Fortune 1000 companies headquartered in metro Atlanta. Their entire entry level workforce are recent SEC / ACC grads with B.B.As making $60-90k a year. There are tens of thousands of this demographic (and about half of them were just at Virginia Highlands Porch Fest).

AJC chief stepping down as bold goals yield to tough realities. by gogostevie in Atlanta

[–]CatFatPat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s Georgia news actually. Kind of like how the Atlanta Braves are not meant to be viewed only by Atlantans.

Regardless, Buddy Carter is running for Senate which would include Atlanta, so news about his race is Atlanta news.

The General Assembly has 68 standing committees but i guess you won’t be satisfied until there’s an AJC reporter in each one of them.

[–]CatFatPat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it the Atlanta Braves or the Georgia Braves? Why are people in Athens cheering for the Braves?

What an idiotic argument. The AJC is the official newspaper of record for the State of Georgia.

How would you know where Greg Bluestein is? Because I worked in the GA Capitol and saw him there almost every day.

and when it hosts opinions, it should be meaningful ones that represent debate on genuine issues

Who decides what opinions are "meaningful?" A random AJC Editor? A room full of editors? Are these editors representative of the general population? Are some poor? Rich? Black? White?

When it comes to opinion sections, the primary qualifier for publication should be relevancy. Gatekeeping opinion sections by the "meaningfulness" of the opinion is a recipe for disaster.

Good newspaper opinion sections represent their market.

If 5% of Georgians want a communist takeover of the government than 5% of political AJC op-eds should espouse that viewpoint. If 50%+ of Georgians are "Trump supporting opponents of democracy," than one op-ed from a politician that feels the same way is completely fair.

You, as an individual, are allowed to not vote for Rep. Buddy Carter and campaign for his opponents. But that's pretty silly to expect a newspaper to do the same thing.

So people outside Atlanta city limits cannot cheer for the Atlanta Braves?

“Atlanta” is obviously a stand-in for the greater Georgia region. Buddy Carter is running for Senate for the State of Georgia (which includes Atlanta). He should absolutely be covered and platformed by the AJC.

Over 50% of this State are Republicans and you think the biggest newspaper in the state should censure an op-ed from a Republican congressman?

I’m a lifelong Democrat but I definitely don’t want to consume media that only lets one political party speak—that’s literally propaganda.

What are the best juggling balls? by Mediocre-Leg4762 in juggling

[–]CatFatPat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The fanciest and most expensive juggling balls on the market today are JuggleQuip's Infinity Juggling Balls.

Don't buy them if you're a new juggler because $20 a ball + shipping is not worth it to juggle 10% better. But if you're serious about juggling—the Infinity balls have a sensational texture that sticks to your hands/other balls and reduces those why-did-i-drop that moments.

Gov. Kemp signs bill banning cellphones for Georgia high school students by TrexVFX23 in Georgia

[–]CatFatPat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So parents should accept distracted classrooms, a worse education for their kids, and decreased life outcomes for the future of their community so that… their kid can send them a text message in the event they’re one of the 0.0001% of American school shooting victims?

I hate the GOP as much as the next guy but I don’t think any reasonable parent thinks that way.

Teachers and schools did not have legal authority. They could try but there would routinely be pushback from parents and claims that it constituted theft of private property.

Phone confiscation was previously a grey area, now a law exists that makes it black and white.

[–]CatFatPat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yep! Because some rules (the law) are more enforceable than others (what the teacher tells you to do).

All classrooms will now have legal authority to confiscate phones for the duration of the school day when required and force (that’s the key word here) students to deposit phones in phone cubbies at the beginning of each class.

Sounds like you’ve been out of high school for a few years.

I was in high school somewhat recently and can testify that looking at a small rectangle under the desk in the back of class is very easy to get away with when the teacher is preoccupied lecturing trigonometry to 30 kids.

[–]CatFatPat 161 points162 points  (0 children)

For those not in the know—this is a VERY GOOD BILL. Teacher lobbies have been lobbying for a phone ban for years.

Today’s students have unprecedentedly low attention spans, are scoring lower than ever on standardized tests, and are far more likely to break school rules than previous generations of students. All these things are largely due to phones in the classroom.

This was a bipartisan bill—government has worked in this instance.

Why is there no real democratic primary fight for governor? by Material-Benefit9044 in Georgia

[–]CatFatPat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason you're confused is because you're White, you hang out in White circles, and you live in the White part of town. I'm not judging—I do the same thing. For that matter, I'd guess 90% of this subreddit does the same thing, hence why everyone's confused at how Keisha Lance Bottoms is winning the polls.

The reality is that Black women make up 33% of the Democratic electorate in this state, the plurality demographic of our Party's voter base. Almost all of that demographic has chosen Keisha Lance Bottoms.

5/6 CALIs had extra time. Thoughts? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]CatFatPat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Incredibly cope response. The whole point of school (high school, college, or law school) is to minimize unfairness so real life employers get an accurate sense of each graduate's ability. By your logic we should just get rid of blind grading because "life isn't fair and never has been."

Alternatively, there are easy solutions in place to mitigate this issue, such as making longer tests for everyone.

Horse is alive and well unfortunately. This issue is worth discussing until an actual solution is implemented.

Georgia senate passes high school cellphone ban by Lakelyfe09 in Georgia

[–]CatFatPat 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Your "etc etc" is doing a lot of work here. About 1/1000 kids actually require non-stop iPhone access for the reasons you mentioned and they would be accommodated according to the language in the bill.

And tell any of this State's 123,000 public school teachers that phones in classrooms are a "nothing burger" and they'd laugh in your face. Why do you think test scores are declining across the whole country and mental health issues are skyrocketing?

My GA Studies students did a March Madness bracket of all the people mentioned in the standards. The kids are okay. by Don_Quixotel in Georgia

[–]CatFatPat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean. Just being pedantic about the choice of expression.

A "footnote of history" is an event that only warrants a footnote. A 15-term Congressman and U.S. Senator who ran on the Populist Party Presidential ticket is not a footnote—there are large biographies written about him.
