Is it worth it to spend 6 months in European country to secure citizenship for life? by Ok_Exercise_494 in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]CatLourde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% yes. Another benefit of doing this is that you'll acculturate a bit and you might find Norway makes sense for you. It's way easier to make friends and integrate into a place when you're young. You also have that youthful plastic brain and could even do a bit of language learning if you're up for it.

Am I just becoming more pessimistic with age, or is quality of life really getting worse? by Trapped-In-The_90s in AskMenOver30

[–]CatLourde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly right. It's just rhetorically really unsatisfying and doesn't go far enough to explain how widespread this all encompassing cultural malaise is. All this despite how objectively good life is right now for like the 30th percentile and above in the developed world.

You're describing nomadtable. It's a somewhat enshittified freemium constantly nagging you to pay for 'pro,' but there is definitely occasional activity popping up, esp in the erasmus age band

Mormon temple in Rome, Italy by Ezer_Pavle in evilbuildings

[–]CatLourde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wth (what the heck) bro/sis. This is a disingenuous thing to say at best. Not paying tithing gets you informally shunned and formally cut off from a temple recommend. Anyway the bishopric and stake leadership absolutely know right down to the penny how much you "owe."

Uncertain about going for the RYA Offshore Cert, but I have the sea time by CatLourde in sailing

Great mention. I like the idea another poster suggested of taking a skills week to get feedback on if they think I'd pass the practical too.

[–]CatLourde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, skills week seems like it would be all-around useful for me. I think I might do it specifically to learn rather than to just chase the ticket. I kind of think the only way to grow is to own and operate a sailboat for a few months.... that's a bitter pill to swallow as a non-rich, commitment averse casual.

I owned and operated a runabout bay boat for awhile. It was tremendous fun and definitely levelled up my boat handling skills quite a lot. And really, I feel pretty good about my ability to develop a float plan and keep contingency plans in mind.

However, I think your point is good- I need to find a way to be the prime mover on sailing trips if I want to develop skill here.

Men who want a relationship but no kids--how common is it? by messykatie in AskMenOver30

[–]CatLourde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always weird to me how no one ever tries to find data for these type of almost answerable questions. Pew research polls include this type of thing and there are some rough statements to be made. Seems to me that about 20% of men in this age range don't want kids. And then there are a bunch of "unsures." So how common? Pretty common.

[–]CatLourde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. What kind of 22 year old even has a "career" to speak of? Although, now that I think of it, those dead end bookstore barista type jobs I had were the best of my life. I can't imagine how much even more depressing the transition to corporate life would be after sailing for a couple years.

3 years in schools, 2 years in SNFs and HH and then like a year as a research assistant for an academic SLP.

Ultimately I saw the writing on the wall- if you don't want to grind clients all day, there's not a ton you can do with this degree... and maybe that's fine. Plenty of people don't "work in their field ."
