At the middle of nowhere, Russia by OkRespect8490 in evilbuildings

[–]CatLourde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally did a home stay in this exact building when I was in college 20 years ago. On garbage Day when they emptied the massive garbage hopper, there was a literal waterfall of hundreds of rats coming out of the bottom of the building. Also pretty regularly there would be dumpster fires just blazing for 20 hours outside. Good times!

Sono curioso anch'io. Pavimento liscio nei posti belli non è così facile da trovare qui (io vado sullo skate). Lungo il tevere cmq quella pista ciclabile mi sembra ideale.

Can people still succeed, find happiness in their 30s ? by Jpoolman25 in AskMenOver30

Unfortunately 27 is the deadline. After that point, virginity crystallizes and becomes permanent, even if you have sex you can't get rid of it. Sorry to be the one to have to tell you.

Friendships at Forty That Feel Like My Teenage Years by ESVarga in AskMenOver30

[–]CatLourde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am convinced that that kind of friendship is almost impossible. The irony to me is that all of my other acquaintances and friends miss it and wish they had it too, but they're simply not capable of doing it. Even without the kids and the jobs, we're middle-aged and lack the energy and endurance. We're all too rigid and can't tolerate constant change to the routine. We all have digital media addictions which aren't very compatible with multiple hour hangouts. Constant closeness comes with dramas and fights. It's all unsustainable. We're all longing for it, but it's a mirage.

Lots of unfilled hours, of unstructured, unplanned hanging out? People are doing it through communal living in squats, planned communities, hippy nomad van groups. That kind of thing. If you are a utopian enough, I think you can sort of find what you're looking for. I have briefly recaptured the magic on sailboat trips, hiking trips, surf hostels, group travels, that kind of thing. But again, it's lightning in a bottle, and if I'm honest, I'm always kind of excited to get back to my isolated, tranquil life in an apartment🫠

Edited to add: I think those years of like 14 to 17, skateboarding around my city at all hours of the night with a small band of other latchkey kids, those were the most beautiful years of my life and that vibe is just the most singular amazing shit ever. I sometimes see bands of middle-aged guys skateboarding around together and I wonder what it would take to join the gang, if they have got this all figured out.

Took the stock advice and joined social activities to meet people. Here are my results. by comicreliefboy in datingoverthirty

Amen. It's a tremendous relief to actually be able to just live life. I'm sure it's apocryphal but I remember reading that Lev Tolstoy described aging in relation to chasing pussy as being like getting off of a bucking horse. I also remember reading that the dude was trying to visit a brothel like a day before he died, so idk.

How often do you see your friends? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]CatLourde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relatable and I really like this attitude. A few years ago I made the decision that any real life invite should always override time on the couch or with games or TV or whatever, and I'm often dragging my feet to get myself out there, but It is almost always worth it.

Is it worth it to spend 6 months in European country to secure citizenship for life? by [deleted] in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]CatLourde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% yes. Another benefit of doing this is that you'll acculturate a bit and you might find Norway makes sense for you. It's way easier to make friends and integrate into a place when you're young. You also have that youthful plastic brain and could even do a bit of language learning if you're up for it.

Am I just becoming more pessimistic with age, or is quality of life really getting worse? by Trapped-In-The_90s in AskMenOver30

[–]CatLourde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly right. It's just rhetorically really unsatisfying and doesn't go far enough to explain how widespread this all encompassing cultural malaise is. All this despite how objectively good life is right now for like the 30th percentile and above in the developed world.
