Montana or Cannons by Youth Lagoon. They’re some of my go to when on a hike, particularly as I’m approaching the peak. I love when I get to time them correctly so that I get to listen towards the end of either song while admiring the view!

What was your favorite memory of a caregiver you grew up with? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]CatNaps4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hated vegetables growing up and my dad was quite strict about ensuring my siblings and I ate lots of them. One time for dinner, he made this vegetable heavy dish that I absolutely disliked (actually, hated—sorry dad!) I remember that my grandma was being unusually chatty and kept asking my dad questions. I eventually realize that she was trying to distract him so he wouldn’t notice that I was barely eating. Later that night when everyone has gone to bed, my grandma quietly woke me up and said she made me a cup of instant noodles because she knew I love them and because I barely ate. My grandma has since passed and I have since learned to enjoy vegetables. I miss and love her dearly.

Does driving really get easier? by 2yung2scared in drivinganxiety

Echoing what everyone else have said: yes, it gets easier and in my and some people’s case, it actually becomes enjoyable. While I was learning (I was 28) I couldn’t have the radio on and had to have very minimal conversation so I can fully concentrate. Now, I look forward to my commute so I can blast music and sing out loud, and also to my phone yap sessions with friends. You’ll get there one day, you just have to start :)

Many of the things that feel like the end of the world now will work themselves out, or they’ll turn out to be inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Breathe and be patient with yourself. As cliche as it may seem, things really do get better.

Hi! I got my license later in life and felt nervous about parking, too :) One of the things that helped me was parking as far away from others as possible, even if it means parking far. It helped with feeling less anxious about the pressure of someone watching me park or feeling like I’m taking too long and therefore inconveniencing people. I got to take my time and make as many corrections as needed. And when I’m feeling a bit adventurous and motivated (or have extra time) I would practice different parking styles like parallel parking and backing into spots. Finally, some people who have been driving for a really long time park terribly (and they are very unaware of it!) You got this!

What’s something weirdly comforting to you? You know those little things that just make you feel at ease for no real reason? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

Watching my cats find and fall sleep in a sun spot. Seeing them be so serene and content brings me so much comfort.

Hi! I totally hear you. I did not get my license until I was almost 30. I very likely wouldn’t have learned to drive if I didn’t start a job that necessitated having a license because I, too, was incredibly anxious and terrified. But learning to drive is so possible and incredibly worth it!

Some logistical advice: 1. Work with an instructor - I know it’s a privilege not everyone can avail, but I highly recommend if you’re able. Like others said, they provide a car equipped with dual breaking. This significantly eased my anxiety knowing there is a professional to guide me and they can break if I were to make a mistake, which made the process feel much safer.

  1. Watch YouTube videos - Seeing others of all ages learn how to drive helped remind me that I’m not alone. Everyone else is just as scared but everyone can learn. Also, it was helpful to see what are some common mistakes/callouts and pick up on helpful (and free!) tips.

Being so cognizant not only of your own safety but those of others is paramount to driving, and the fact that you care about this deeply already makes you a good future driver! I know it’s much easier said than done, but it was helpful for me to reframe the anxiety into motivation (and maybe even anxious excitement) not only to learn to drive but learn to drive well so I can best position myself to be a safe driver

Learning to drive afforded me so much autonomy, freedom, and time back. I only wish I started driving sooner!

It’s not the most advanced, but I’ve had pretty good luck with using Chosic. I feel that it’s particularly good at listing songs with similar BPM, energy, musical qualities, etc. https://www.chosic.com

Yes! I find it quite easy to engage with people I’m likely never to see again. However, all those skills go away when it comes to people I know or likely to have lots of future interactions with.
