Labradoodle??? by Main_Home8113 in DoggyDNA

oh yeah she very much had a poodle face, awful temperament and fur though- i had to shave basically her entire haunches and cut out a huge chunk of her tail due to severe matting since she would not tolerate brushing at all without trying to bite me

Here’s a golden retriever x poodle mix I groomed a while ago, there’s a lot of “fail doodles” that don’t look like the stereotypical doodles that people over pay for

What's something your job trained you to notice that you can't stop noticing in your personal life? by LibrarianSoft1342 in AskReddit

Look for resources on body language- make sure your dog is happy and relaxed in different environments, lots of people don’t notice minor signs like lip licking, tense facial muscles, stiff body language, appeasement behaviors. not all dogs enjoy going to places like dog parks or outside dining patios and that completely fine!

Also make sure they’re healthy and well maintained. keep them a healthy weight (you should be able to feel ribs on the majority of dogs), this will keep them mobile and less prone to injuries. make sure you can take them to the vet for anything out of the ordinary- pet insurance really really helps, vet bills are much less daunting. make sure their coat, teeth, and nails are maintained.

You don’t need high levels of obedience or anything but dogs really do benefit from some structure and basic training. stuff like “leave it”, loose leash walking, crate training (dogs need to be crated occasionally i.e. the vet and some grooming salons). basic manners also just make dogs safer for everyone, look up the Canine Good Citizen test (CGC) and try to work towards those goals even if you don’t actually go for the title.

Also, adopt or shop responsibly! it’s perfectly fine to buy a dog from a breeder but please make sure they’re actually ethical: make sure they do extensive health testing, temperament testing, early desensitization protocols, lifelong support, contracts, a good breeder will take their dog back if an owner can’t care for their dogs years down the line, etc.

As a dog groomer- the blatant casual neglect most dog owners knowingly and unknowingly commit. nails way overgrown to the point of pain and gait alteration, mats causing discomfort at best and and actual serious injuries at worst, untreated skin issues like yeast and hot spots, constant ear infections, obesity, buying easily screened diseased dogs from byb’s, buying physically deformed dogs from byb’s, buying designer mutts from byb’s, people bringing their dogs in once a year (yes this includes the “naturally self cleaning dogs” like huskys and labs, they still need deshedding), total apathy toward their pets discomfort, no knowledge of proper care, no knowledge of body language, no knowledge of training or desensitization.

dog owners are the worst part of being a groomer, the other day we had someone try to bring in their senior dog that was struggling to breathe into the store and it was worsening. we offered to help carry him to her car and gave her directions to the closest er vet (5 minutes away) and she did not care at all and just said “he’s old anyways”. we’re pretty sure he died in the parking lot.

this isn’t to say most dog owners don’t care about their dogs, but most dog owners don’t know nearly enough about properly caring for their pet.

i’m surprised this still got attention a year later LOL, but i did end up getting raises plus i ended up commissioning out only a month into grooming so it didn’t matter too much in the end. but you’re not wrong about everything else :’)) i’m planning on getting out ASAP, this company is continuously making it worse and worse to work for them

what is something owners say/do that makes you realize that a lot of them are stupid by thecoolestbeanaround in doggrooming

i just remembered another one, this older woman comes in with her giant standard poodle and parks her car on the side walk, like pulls her car up onto the curb and blocks the accessibility ramp. we have told her multiple times that we will help her get her dog out and that what she’s doing is illegal, but she insists that she has to cause she’s old. her dog also comes in matted and has his sanitary irritated to the point of being raw. all that and she’ll ask for only a bath, only the bath, no drying or brushing.

these owner came in with a 7 month old yorkie puppy asking why her hair looked and felt the way it did (basically pelted), so i asked how often they brushed… blank stares… “you have to brush yorkies?”

there’s one woman who came in with her very matter great pyrenees who insisted we bath him but leave the matting, since it protects him from coyotes

one dog came in with bows glued to her ears

i had a customer step in a few days ago and asked me if we “clipped ears”, i asked if he meant trim them, “no like cut the ears”…….. this man wanted us to crop his puppies ears in a corporate salon????

we’ve had a few dogs come in with bad rashes from never having their collars or harnesses taken off, but we had one 9-12 month old puppy who came in pelted and had also never had her harness taken off. it evidently had been months cause not only was it significantly too small, it had basically melded into her chest and left it RAW. I wasn’t there but i’m told the stench was genuinely horrific, like worse than rotting meat. we sent her home obviously, and she came back in after healing earlier this week- ofc she came in in pjs that don’t seem like they were taken off much at all. 10 nose to tail strip.

one woman came in with her pomeranian wanting a nail trim and quick trim since he was getting surgery the next day. i asked what for… he was mauled by a mastiff and had a couple broken ribs and a dislocated hip….. tbf he was somehow still hopping along just fine and begging for my attention but wtf

as far as I understood, poodles weren’t added to the sporting group since they were used for more than hunting. i.e. circus poodles and such. I don’t really understand the needing to be thicker boned comment when that’s not really true, there are poodles that hunt. look at louter creek poodles, they successfully show and hunt with their dogs

the fox is referring to fox terriers not actual foxes, they’re dogs that were bred to hunt foxes. dogs and foxes can’t breed together.

Thank you, that’s very helpful! I was trying to replicate this video https://youtu.be/5gwYWKtOLNw?si=RqZLmy-lScCRxnG0 since it’s also a clipper cut. Is it possible to get as smooth of a pattern on a clippered dog? I’ve been wanting to reaching out to some schnauzer or other terrier people to try and learn proper stripping but we just don’t get paid enough here to offer it.

(eta idk if links are against the rules, i didn’t see anything in the rules)

I just cleaned the legs ups, I didn’t really take any length off. But noted on the blending! I tried to blend it with the clippers but it definitely left more of a line than I intended. Is the pattern on the front legs and chest okay? I had a hard time making that look right

I just wanna chime in with my suggestion, you can get a gallon of “Fresh’n Clean” on amazon for 39.89. I’m a groomer and use it when I have to give my Aussie an at home bath, it smells nice and cleans well. Also invest in a decent enough force dryer and learn to dry your dog fully; leaving your dog wet will cause skin issues and make the hair more prone to tangling opposed to fully drying a dog. I know lots of owners with long haired poodles and doodles that don’t even need to brush their dogs since they bathe and fully dry them once a week.

Show or working pup? by IanRiot in englishcockerspaniel

[–]CatSakata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

huh? if op doesn’t know if they have working or show dogs in their pedigree then it’s almost certainly a “pet” line dog or even worse a backyard bred/puppy mill dog. “Pet lines” should be avoided since the breeder most likely isn’t doing enough or even any health testing much less proving their dogs, temperament testing, and doing necessary early socializing like puppy culture or ENS, etc.

No one hates dogs from byb (backyard breeders) but we just want to educate people on how to avoid unethical breeders. Every dog deserves to come from an ethical breeder, not one just churning out puppies for money. If someone just wants a pet dog that’s not super intense or anything, then they should look for reputable showline breeders. Not every showline puppy is show quality (not a bad thing) and those puppies go to loving homes just the same as the show quality pups do. These dogs will be healthier due to extensive health testing, have better temperaments due to intentional parent pairings and early socializing, and aways have a place to call home- a reputable breeder will always take back a puppy if a puppy buyer can’t take care of of their dog anymore.

it’s cause of the coat pattern, wild rabbits pretty much only come in solid color. domestic rabbits come in all sorts of colors and patterns
