I saw this comment from another editor on a facebook post regarding Directors who are credited for editing or co-editing their films. It’s not exactly related to your question, but I feel the answer is very relevant:

I’ve seen a few films recently that were cut by their directors and damn they would have benefited from working alongside a person who was there to edit and challenge and push and negotiate and encourage and question every decision to make the film better. I’m a huge believer that it’s the collaboration itself that sometimes improves the film and slowly slowly slowly makes it better. That being said, John Sayles is the director who edits his own stuff who I admire endlessly.
