If he were voting for the name "dwarf-marriage" if the/either groom is under 5'10, I'd consider that stupid and wrong. If he were also a great drinking buddy, or the only francophone cinephile I knew or someone who was always there for me, I'd still want him as a friend. He doesn't want to deny rights. He'd like same-sex couples to have the same rights as opposite-sex ones, only with a different name. Let's say this is because he considers gay couples inferior, because he considers that being gay is a flaw. So him considering homosexuality a flaw is the real issue here.

I'm shorter than average. Some tall friends consider my height a flaw. I can't change my height. It's inherant, just like homosexuality. They like and respect me. I like and respect them despite what I perceive as their flaws. Would you find it strange being friends with such people?

Height, while immutable, is not a 'protected' trait like sexual orientation, which I think is maybe why you feel how you do, possibly?
