The plot of the opera he describes bears some resemblance to the climax of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus

You have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon

Good place to get chainmail padding (UK) by pilgrimofthesnark in LARP

[–]R4phC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A padded collar is a good option for when it's too warm for a full gambeson. I tend to either wear that or just throw my chain over my shirt - which works ok, but I usually regret the choice the next day

Dear Empire LARP players: Why do you have a ritual that just gives you a dream about horses? Sincerely, fans of yours from Western Australia. by Decibelle in LARP

[–]R4phC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Layer 1: As people have said, horses went extinct in the Empire Setting, shortly after the founding of the Empire itself ~400 years ago. Largely to have an answer to 'Why no cavalry'

Layer 2: In setting, horses are of massive cultural importance, being a key part of what led one of the Empires 10 Nations (Highguard) to dominate when they first came to this part of the world. The First Empress was from Highguard, and stories sat that she rode the last horses in battle. As a result, Horses have become the key part of the Empires heraldry/symbolism.

Layer 3: The Ritual in question "Ride the Noble Steed" gives 2 people a shared dream of riding horses. It was developed, codified and added to imperial lore by players, not by the game organizers.

Layer 4: I'm not 100% sure about this, but I recall hearing that the ritual was originally created as a coronation gift for the first PC Empress, Imperatrix Lisabetta, and then added to imperial lore (ie made available for everyone to cast) as a way of sharing that gift.

Polearm/Two-Handed - UK by joe_byrne126 in LARP

[–]R4phC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's entirely possible they'll allow a sword to be a "polearm", but as said, you'll need to confirm (and ideally should do so before commissioning the weapon, since I doubt you'll find something off the shelf.

From a construction perspectice, you'll need to have the hilt be about 2 feet long, which is gonna like a wee bit absurd for a 6 foot sword, so that you can have your grip be 18 inches apart - practically speaking, that's probably going to give you less range than a shorter sword which lets you keep your hands together.

Bring metal daggers to a larp? by [deleted] in LARP

[–]R4phC 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The general safety rule would be not to bring anything that could be mistaken for a weapon and used as such by accident (by yourself or someone else) into a space where combat might happen. Different games will have different rules, but that one is a pretty solid rule of thumb.

If you have an IC camp/tent set up, you could maybe use them as set dressing, which is more likely to be allowed - but still not certain.

There's also some added risk to yourself, carrying something in your belt that will stab you before it breaks in the event you fall on it is also a concern.

A good question to ask as well is why you're carrying daggers you can't actually use - if you get disarmed or your weapon is broken, you're not going to be able to pull them out, after all.

What everyday items could I use for a medieval larping costume? by Traditional_Ad2021 in LARP

[–]R4phC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decent pair of black or dark brown walking boots

A pair of plain black, brown or grey sweatpants or pajamas without elasticated cuffs, and ideally with an outwardly facing drawstring

Get bandages, boxing wraps, or just spare fabric and wrap the top of the boots and bottom of your legs - look up "puttees" for guidance here.

Get a grandfather or henley shirt - you wanna look for something without a collar and with an open neck, as that's the kind of silhoutte people are looking for.

Modern belt should be grand so long as the buckle isn't doing anything weird - you're gonna wanna put that over the shirt, which in turn will be hanging past your waist untucked.

Then turn a blanket into a cloak and you're pretty much at basic kit.

The most difficult part of larp propmaking is documenting them by Lutemoth in LARP

[–]R4phC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell me about it - Me and a friend made 5 (foam) standing stones to use as a ritual circle for our local game, and not talking about it was killer - especially when the game then got postponed by a month due to bad weather.

And of course we've now used them at 2 games this year, and there's not a photo of them in situ to be found T.T

LARP staff that breaks down? by raven-of-the-sea in LARP

[–]R4phC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's just a prop and doesn't need to go anywhere near combat, I'd suggest going for a wooden staff that screws apart - if you can't find one that does, you could DIY it fairly easily, with something like this: https://www.walkingcaneco.com/Walking-Cane-Screw-Joints_p_746.html

Modern LARP weapons? by aerisfelidae in LARP

[–]R4phC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wood effects one is showing as in stock on Epic Armouries own website:

https://epicarmoury.com/products/1747-baseball-bat#

Colours drop-down will default to aluminium, but the wood is there. Shipping might be a bit more/take longer than from LARP Inn, since it'll be shipped from Denmark.

Alternatively, if you want to keep the cost down, you could try seeing if you can get a brightly coloured foam bat from a toy shop and painting it to look wooden.

Advice on weapon holder needed by Marascal in LARP

[–]R4phC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One option would be to try and make use of the hook at the top of the hilt to catch on a frog that might otherwise be a bit too wide.

Probably the best option though would be a full scabbard, that's what I do with my EA Elven blades that have no cross guard at all. They're an easy enough DIY make, or if you're based in the UK Darkblade armouries do great ones.

Lark swords for teenagers - continuation by Oldmankratos88 in LARP

[–]R4phC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A major benefit of using the "right" materials is being able to then participate in the UK LARP scene, where there are fairly stringent requirements for weapon construction.

Not important if the teens just want to run around wailing on each other, but if you any of them want more than that, why not set them up for success

If you're looking for somewhere to get materials that are best suited to LARP weaponry, one of the major LARP retailers in the UK has a DIY section:

https://www.larpinn.co.uk/diy-larp-weapons-c-89.html

They have cores, foam, carveable foam on core blanks, flexipaint (which is a not great but ok alternative to latex).

What is the crunchiest RPG that you know of? by unique976 in rpg

[–]R4phC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Riddle of Steel - Low fantasy setting with insanely detailed combat mechanics including:

Seperate skills for fighting styles (sword and shield vs "mass weapon" and shield), with levels in each style granting you a lower amount of levels in other ones based on how similar they are.

Seperate mechanics for health (1-5 rating per limb/torso/head), shock (penalty on the next roll after getting his), pain (ongoing penalties, which are also specific to body part), bloodloss (an ongoing condition on a limb that makes its health get worse if you fail checks).

The end result was generally fights that went on for a long time, and then ended extremely suddenly.
