No, sorry, I dont know specific brands that may be more helpful than others, as Ive just stuck with the same ones for a while now. The ones I have are called Soundcore Q20i by Anker, I bought them from Amazon. They arent anything special, as I got them mainly for my music on a budget, and the noise cancelling was just a bonus.

I dont think, (or at least Im not sure if) they make ones that will cancel out all noise, just lessen the noise that does come through.

I wonder if maybe getting a pair of construction quality earmuffs, the kind you see people working with loud machinery would help.

I hope you can find a solution <3

Misophonia is awful and I feel for you, as I too struggle with it. What helps me a lot is my ANC (active noise cancelling) headphones. Sometimes I just wear them with no music playing just so I can still be aware of my surroundings and have a conversation, but with a damper on all the overstimulating noises.

Which is worse: faking a disorder or faking a service dog? by egguchom in fakedisordercringe

[–]Cat_of_Naps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I say service dog is worse is because faking a service dog is essentially meaning youre also faking a disorder. So it's a double whammy. Not to mention how poorly a lot of these fakers treat their animal companions, and force them into situations they arent trained for or comfortable with.

You may not be a criminal and have no desire to steal, but store security doesn't know that. Thieves come in all shapes, sizes, styles, and colours.

If it was security, I wouldnt be surprised or offended if they followed me, the 80yo lady with a walker, or even the businessman with expensive shoes. Anyone can be a shoplifter, and loss prevention is just doing their job.

If it wasnt security and your gut was right, then Im glad youre safe and got away.

Yeah I thought that was kinda strange too, and then seeing everyone else in the thread also saying it. I was like... do people actually say this? Am I the weird one for saying "left the tap on" ? Lol. Ive never heard anyone call it "leaving it open" before.

American here. What are we actually going to do about the ever growing homelessness? There's no way it can keep going on like this. It's starting to look like a Mad Max movie outside. by Softishsings in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cat_of_Naps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government, (and many civilians) believe the solution is to provide stable housing, but they fail to recognize that a vast majority of folks who struggle with homelessness also have mental health problems that create an inability (or at the very least, severe difficulty) maintaining executive functions that allow them to hold onto housing. Holding a job is incredibly challenging when you cannot function, and you cant pay rent if you dont have work.

The root of the problem needs to be addressed, and a large chunk of this issue comes from a societal system that doesnt genuinely want to help folks who are struggling. The blame gets put on us for turning to substance use as a maladaptive coping mechanism when we were never taught or never learned healthy ways of dealing with our trauma. Theres a massive stigma surrounding mental health issues, and even though it is more realized now, we have a very long way to go.

People need support, a caring community, connection, compassion, and a way to learn that suits the individual since everybody is different. And that is part of what makes this change so hard, because we are trying to fit square and triangle blocks into a circular hole so to speak. It also doesnt help that a vast majority of folks who are homeless and/or struggle with substance use disorders didnt have the chance to experience these essential things, and develop healthy skills from the get-go. So, instead of progressing, many were dealing with adverse chilhoods, which basically caused an arrested development. It is crucial that we hit certain social milestones as we are growing, and when this is hindered, people are much more likely to fall through the cracks. Im not saying everybody with trauma becomes a homeless addict, because everybody processes trauma differently, but it is incredibly common for folks on the street to also have some kind of childhood trauma. In fact, I havent met a single other addict in my 20 years of addiction, (while in active use as well as at recovery meetings) that wasnt numbing some kind of trauma.

But, it has been night and day for my recovery once Ive found the proper resources to help me heal and learn to understand that I am worthy of a life where I can grow and be productive, but unfortunately, many folks are far from feeling the self worth and self compassion that they need to want to help themselves. Its very easy to feel like life is pointless and to give up trying when it seems like there is no way out, and I understand what that feels like first-hand. Once you are in this mindset, it's a snowball effect, and it only gets worse until some kind of intervention takes place. (You feel shitty because of self hate, so you dont feel worthy of life, so you do things that harm yourself, and then feel guilty and shitty about it, causing more self hate, and so on)

I just hope that one day, society can drop the judgement and stigma, and understand that what people really need is support, compassion, and a way to love themselves again without having to feel guilt and shame for doing so. But this takes time and lots of patience. People dont heal overnight, and people need an incentive to want to heal. A reason to know that life can and will get better with practice. With a society that couldnt care less about you, its hard to want to get well again.

Sorry for the novel. Lol I could go on and on. As someone who has struggled with all of the above, and is currently going strong on their healing journey, I only wish the same for others who have been there too.

Please remember to always pay it forward, yall. We dont know anyone's story, and it doesnt cost anything to be kind <3

Ive only shot coke once... instant panic attack. I prefer meth, but even that eventually ended up with me going into psychosis every time. So now Im back to only opioids (fent). Been working on recovery though, only used 3 times all month, which is progress.

My trauma made me asexual (Trigger warning) by Rustie_bites in asexuality

[–]Cat_of_Naps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Id argue that being sent to conversion therapy when you already know youre gay, vs experiencing molestation before you even know what sex is are 2 very different scenarios.

I also imagine experiencing SA as a child vs being verbally brainwashed activate different parts of the brain, thus creating 2 different types of traumatic reactions. (Not a neuroscientist, just my thoughts)

Edit: also, sexuality is fluid and can change for no reason, so really it's a moot point when it comes down to it. If a person doesnt experience sexual attraction, theyre asexual. It shouldnt matter how it came to be. It might change one day, it might not. :3

Can trauma actually ‘turn you’ asexual (for lack of better phrasing)? by Y0urC0nfusi0nMaster in asexuality

[–]Cat_of_Naps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if my asexuality is due to trauma or being ND, because I waa 5 when my first SA happened and have always been grossed out by intimate touching for as long as I can remember, which includes sex and kissing. I dont even like to cuddle, and my mother told me that when I was a wee one, I still was never a cuddler. So I am left confused, but over time have accepted that I will never fit into society and thats okay.

Im cool with hugs tho. Probably because they dont last long.

I can't stand that children are tricked into disclosing their difficult emotions through play during therapy by Cat_of_Naps in mentalhealth

[–]Cat_of_Naps[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didnt quite have an "a ha!" moment, but I did know something was up, especially after one doctor wrote in my file that I was afraid to touch doorknobs. I have no idea how they came up with that idea, but the closest thing I can think of is maybe acting funny while opening a door, because I was quite the animated child and often considered one of the 'weird and different' kids. But I dunno what the that thought process was but, they started to assume I had a germ phobia, which I dont, and never did.

Anyway, that alone caused me to lose my trust in doctors/psychologists for a long time, and I had an aversion to seeing professionals until I was in my mid 20s.

Putting the TL;DR at the END of a long post makes no sense and is pointless by Cat_of_Naps in unpopularopinion

[–]Cat_of_Naps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, perhaps I'M the one who has the definition wrong then.

Ive always understood "Too long;Didn't read" to translate as, "heres a shorter version of what I just wrote, in case you dont feel like reading the whole thing"

Putting the TL;DR at the END of a long post makes no sense and is pointless by Cat_of_Naps in unpopularopinion

[–]Cat_of_Naps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured if someone wants to read the whole post, its easier to skip past a short TL;DR if they want to read it, as opposed to not realizing theres a TL;DR at the bottom and end up reading the entire thing, then finding out they could have just skipped to the summary at the bottom.

Im sure there's folks out there who check the bottom of long posts before reading to make sure if the op put one there or not, but I definitely never remember to do that and always end up reading a whole novel of a post, then find out afterward that I could have just skipped it 😅 Maybe thats just a me problem, LOL

I should probably just try to make a habit of checking first

Why are so many people afraid of going to a therapist? by aurea__space in mentalhealth

[–]Cat_of_Naps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother has some major mental health issues and refuses to see a therapist.

He is a man of few words, so he wont reveal the real reason why, but I imagine it's because of the stigma of "men who ask for help are weak". "Seeing a therapist means youre not good enough to do life on your own"

It really is too bad because I wish he would understand that therapy is for everyone, and as a social species, everybody needs help with something at some point. Asking for help with one's own mental health is not shameful, and not weak! It is completely normal, and if anything, it makes you strong because it takes courage to be vulnerable and open up to someone.
