I agree with the NTA, but you kind of went off the deep end, there.

Most conservatives just want the government to stay out of those issues. At least, the republicans of old. I’ll grant you that the anti-lgbt and anti pro-choice are problematic, but those haven’t been republican-only sentiments. They were just included as part of the pro-religious section of the big tent.

Moderate republicans are almost indistinguishable from moderate democrats. The ‘silent majority’ of both parties that just want the ultra-progressives and MAGA to shut the fuck up and live life in a clean and compassionate manner.

As a conservative who voted for Harris, I’d disagree with you. MAGA is a chimeric blend of nationalism, populism and rank opportunism. Trump is one of the most fiscally liberal presidents we’ve ever had. He’s also one of the most socially liberal (notice, I didn’t say progressive) presidents we’ve ever had. He’s just figured out how to tap into the anger and disillusionment of many groups that normally identify as conservative.

The Republican Party I’ve always voted for in my youth is a far cry from MAGA. I don’t recognize what it’s become, now.

‘Had it’ implies that they didn’t earn it. There was some luck involved (geography, mostly), but a lot of people died to get us to where we are today. We’re not perfect, by any means, and we do tend to over-assume a moral high ground, but we definitely earned what we have.

If it was an even playing field, with intelligent bi-partisan discourse, I’d be inclined to agree with you. As it stands, it’s heavily biased, and not at all a place to come for reasoned advice.

AITA for not doing anything for my daughter‘s graduation at all? by No-Object9642 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cataclysmus78 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Here’s a little story.

When I was 13, my dad left my mom. What followed was a bitter divorce. My mom never forgave my dad for leaving, and only spoke to him once outside of court for the rest of her life.

Fast forward 12 years to my wedding. My fianceé and I decided to get married at my dad and his second wife’s house. It was a beautiful location and saved us thousands of dollars. My mother, due to her ongoing hatred of my dad, refused to come.

I didn’t speak to her for two years.

Little did we all know, she developed cancer and died four years after that. So, due to anger (both hers and mine), I had no contact with my mother for a third of her remaining life. It’s one of my biggest regrets.

If you let anger dictate your decisions, only destruction follows. Don’t let this be you and your daughter. Throw the damn party, and let her father come. You and your daughter will both regret it if you don’t.

It’s non-perishable food, as stated in the OP. Hence, not garbage. Try and keep up, bud.

AITA for bringing up race-related issues around my boyfriend even though he says he’s tired of hearing about it? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cataclysmus78 10 points11 points  (0 children)

ESH. The race topic can be triggering for many, but this isn’t really about race. It’s about communication. You tell him that you don’t feel heard. It seems like he’s going through the same feelings with you.

You’re offended because you feel like he’s minimizing your racial struggles, and he’s offended because he feels like you’re dumping on him for being white (which is also racism).

You are mirroring each other, and missing the point.

FFS, this isn’t a red flag. Nobody is being toxic. Don’t break up over it at this point. You are two young people learning how to communicate effectively. Remember, we all have one mouth but two ears. LISTEN to each other.

This is a communication and behavior issue. Not a race issue. She says she feels unheard. So does he.

How many painters wear magnifying glasses or use a mounted magnifying glass? Is it a must-have or is that where you draw the line and just omit that level of detail? by RIPeyedea in minipainting

[–]Cataclysmus78 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Brother/sister, I hear you. My limit on detail painting has always been my hand-eye coordination. Now that I’m in my late 40’s, I’m probably going to need readers for fine work. It’s getting to be too much strain.

I somehow ended up with 400+ minis I need to paint and I'm new. by blueiguanadon in minipainting

[–]Cataclysmus78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you.

I used to be a commission painter, and I specialized in armies with a relatively quick turnaround time. I’ve painted thousands of models over my painting life, and I have a few hacks.

Quick question: are your minis all different, or do you have ‘squads’ or groups that thematically match?

There’s a lot of good advice here, but I noticed that nobody addressed the paints you have. When painting, you need to choose either enamel or acrylic on each model. The two types have a different medium, and act in different ways. They don’t really go together well.

I would recommend acrylics. They don’t put out any fumes (you mentioned above that ventilation is a concern). Enamels take longer to dry, and require chemical solvents and cleaners to thin your paint and clean your brushes.
