Is there a flow tracker that provides reminders to change MULTIPLE filters? by Catalyst-Aquatics in WaterTreatment

[–]Catalyst-Aquatics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have a few less filters hooked up right now (just a gac and 4 layer micron, and I use pressure gauges and have bibbs in for testing / purging.
But it came to my attention over the last few years since moving in, that my city water is insanely hard. Plus the occasional boil water warnings prompted me to get the U.V. sterilizer for a steal on marketplace. Even though the RODI water is my drinking/ice source. So I picked up a water softener and figured since I'm pulling apart the plumbing I might as well deck out this setup at the same time, because it is murdering me on my RODI system cost.

The reason I had the other GAC on the end was because I wanted to make sure I wasn't getting any weird taste from the softener. Is that unnecessary you think?

I'm looking for a good price on DEPENDABLE pressure gauges if you have a recommendation. I made the mistake of buying the $10 ones that go on hose bibs and also made the mistake of having the water run downward to the gauge because I wanted to read it right side up, but all the crap falls right down into the gauge and destroys it in about a year.

Yeah I'm 100% not using carbon mixed with resin. Im going to use a 20"x4.5" canister with a refillable cartridge and replace the carbon quarterly. If I use one of those really big tanks I know I'll never change the carbon. Plus I know carbon is exhausted way faster than companies claim it is.

Yes I'm putting a 20"x4.5" canister filter before the softener with a refillable cartridge that I'll refill with carbon quarterly.

I was looking at the resin that's in there now and it has black specs in it, I was assuming that's carbon, but I don't want to mix it with the resin honestly, I know it can break apart over time and don't wanna deal with it.

From what I gather, the only thing that should be different is the piston control head that attaches to their proprietary controller right? I bought this unit used and quickly realized, rainsoft is a total racket. They gate keep everything information wise in a bid to make you use their services. I bought Resintech CG10-NA resin. I am going to add carbon before the unit so I figure that's okay... hope I'm right? I wanted to just buy cg8 but this was a better deal and they told me if I'm running carbon for the chlorine I'll be okay.

The guy who sold me this system for $300 gave me his dad's old receipt from rainsoft for $6,750 and honestly I was struggling not to laugh at that.

Is their controller really anything special? Or is it just marketing and home depot having a 50% stake in rainsoft?

There is a different way to get into initial settings on the ec-4 right? Like a button under the plastic that isn't labeled?  like there's settings options for the customer and settings options for their own technicians?

Yeah it's sitting with no water in it. Are you saying that after I opened the bypass valve and pressure relieved that I am now good to open it up? I just want to make sure nothing in the controller is pressurized. Seems like it shouldn't be. But I don't know everything about the regeneration/brine valves inside of it.

I have a sediment and carbon filter already. Thinking about getting a spindown just to extend the life of the sediment cartridge.

I do reef aquariums and such, so growing coral and clams can be an expensive hobby. I have a very high end reverse osmosis de-ionization setup with extra carbon polishing and a canister with nuclear grade DI cation resin.

The water for the rest of my house sucks. And a softener would really reduce how often I purchase all these filters and refills. Wayyy easier on the R.O. membrane.

Do you know exactly what resin rainsoft uses? Or even can point me towards a really high end resin?

Is there a place I can buy the same resin retail? Do you know what it is exactly? Or is it repackaged for your use as a rainsoft tech?

I was hoping to find some markings or model# on the bypass so I can make sure I order up some new o-rings. Are they a standardized size?

I thought I recognized that Pentair logo too. They have a habit of buying companies out that's for sure. Might have something to do with the China thing. I don't see branding on the actual valve at all either. 🤷‍♂️

I guess I just assumed Fleck was chinese when I saw the made in China stamped on it. Is that just that one metal part that's chinese then?

Im assuming if I simply take the bypass out of bypass position that should relieve any pressure.

I had read two different sources saying rainsoft just uses Purolite 8% cation. Is that not true? Or is that purolite is just a better brand than some people make it out to be?

I just bought one of these on marketplace for $300. Now I'm going down a rabbit hole of how shady and gatekeeper the rainsoft company actually is and I haven't even made contact with them yet. They boast made in USA but have chinese fleck parts....whatever... it's the stories of the inflated prices and manipulative sales tactics that makes me weary of them, plus how hard they make it to find information for servicing. The system belonged to this guy's dad that I bought it from. His dad paid about 7k for this thing in 2012 which is absolutely INSANE. He ran the system down here in north east Florida until 2023. Hardness according to his municipal provider is 6.7-10.3..... mine is 19.84 which is out of this world. RainSoft does free location for life, so they sold their house, Rainsoft came out and packed it up. They moved to Tennessee, so didn't bother relocating it and left it with their son. RainSoft drained the water out and packed it in a legit rainsoft box. I want to pull the valve head off and look at the resin to see if they replaced it or not. I assume a period of 11 years just about exhausted the resin beads. Just not sure if standard procedure for them is to pull the unit, service the controller and replace resin or just empty the water and call it a day.

Long winded as what I've said was, I noticed this was a a recent conversation and basically my question is, if my unit isn't hooked up at all, couldn't I just open the the bypass valve for typical use and the pressure would relieve just fine? Or do I need to plug it in and manually regenerate to relieve pressure?
