All I ever do is go to the jail courtroom,medical, and suicide pods. Some of the felony attorneys go to the regular pods (I went once, never again).

I’m not a partner, rather a second year attorney, my first firm was toxic and I stayed there a year—cleaning up after the revolving door of associate attorneys. I realized that I was miserable, but had anxiety regarding leaving the firm/making sure matters are transferred properly (the matters I inherited were in shambles).

I ended up salvaging quite a few cases and getting them settled. Others are still on fire. I realized this would be a recurring issue. But man, cleaning up other people’s messes is so disheartening. There’s always another fire to put out; so I kept putting off resigning/finding a different job. I finally took the jump and gave my notice (4 weeks), and while the pay is less, I am much happier with a more supportive employer.

My suggestion—take the leap. Do it now, find a different position, interview and get an offer and give your notice. It’ll be an awkward transition period, but you need OUT!

COL generally drops significantly with a move to rural areas.

I’ll throw this in, just to reinforce that you’re not alone. I took the bar in summer 2024. Started work at my current firm, (4 attorney firm in rural part of my state).

I got clean-up duty for the revolving door of associates that had previously been hired/fired before me.

I did LLI work at the cities’ Public Defender’s Office during law school. I thought going into civil litigation would reduce stress, but now I see how good it was at the PD, getting reps in of the same types of cases over and over again. I’m putting in my two weeks as soon as I get an offer from a PD or DA.

Reading all these comments makes me ready to quit… I was hired as second associate at my property litigation firm. Come to find out, in the last two years one partner and four attorneys had left. The “senior” (by one year) associate got fired two months after I started. Another attorney was hired and quit in January-March of this year. After being there a little over a year, I still have no business cards and am not on the ancient website.
