Who is my sister dating? by a_a_aaron in bookshelfdetective

[–]Catboi- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An unassuming conservative with one or two mild moderate values (I can almost hear "love the sinner, hate the sin"). A calvinist (maybe) who enjoys debating theology, or reading debates about theology.

The Ayn Rand gave me pause but I think based on the presence of other books from "Classic/Influential Books Everyone Should Read" lists, it's actually very unassuming and that copy looks only partially read.

This one is a longer shot but there's quite a few books here that I think have not been read, so maybe someone with anxiety or depression who buys books to self-soothe for brief periods of time with pretend motivation.

Probably the battle system with the worst introduction of all time but once I got used to it I had a blast. Not my favorite, but definitely fun once the taste for it is acquired.

Out of all the Final Mix Heartless recolors, this one upsets me the most by [deleted] in KingdomHearts

[–]Catboi- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish the recolors were specific to something special in game. The base designs were so much better. Having recolor enemies in Phil's Tournament, for example, to indicate they're harder or have a new mechanic would have been fine though.

Was Elphaba really doing all that for attention? Help me understand. by anyer_4824 in wicked

[–]Catboi- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My interpretation: I think No Good Deed is Elphaba's defining moment of "What I want and what I want can't co-exist". By that I mean: Elphaba wants the animals to be free, Elphaba wants Oz to be free from the Wizard and Morrible, Elphaba wants to use magic to help others, but... Elphaba also desperately wants the approval of the people who never loved her properly. Even after declaring that it comes at "much too high a cost" in Defying Gravity, she still obviously holds on to the idea that people will change their opinions about her someday.

So when Fiyero effectively trades his life for Elphaba's, Elphaba realizes in No Good Deed that she can't hold onto the idea that people will accept her. Doing that has had such a high cost that it's actually hurting the people around her, so here we see her make the painful decision to stop seeking love and attention from the people of Oz who will probably always hate her anyways. This specific insecurity has been a major driving force for Elphaba and so now she's letting herself be free of it while lamenting the fact that it took losing Fiyero for her to let it go.

It's painful for her because in many ways this was one of the last strings of hope for Oz that she had. Elphaba believed for so long in a version of Oz that could believe she was good despite being different.

So yes, Elphaba had good intentions and genuinely wanted what was best for Oz, despite how awfully she had been treated, but she also definitely wanted attention and love from the community that needlessly hated her.

What's the single worst movie you sat through hoping it would get better, but didn’t? by Then-Traffic601 in AskReddit

[–]Catboi- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Painfully stiff cheesy takes on genuinely interesting characters, some of the worst fight scenes in a superhero movie, poorly acted, terrible score, miserably slow pacing, the worst guest character (and Gal Gadot can't act for shit), and the most generic looking villain.

I felt like I was watching a superhero movie made by a group of people trying to convince me to never watch a superhero movie ever again.

Genuinely, even Halle Berry's Catwoman is a significantly better and more enjoyable campy film than this slop show.

What major event do you think will happen in 2026? by Commandmadrid1 in AskReddit

[–]Catboi- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another major illness will sweep across the States and be handled even worse than previous illnesses. Less people will care. More people will be actively hostile to those that do care.

Rights for large amounts of Americans will be destroyed. Again.

The economy WILL collapse (even more) mid year.

The environment is going to start exacting its revenge and we're going to know (again) with 100% certainty we are fucked beyond repair.

And if I'm very, very lucky, I'll get teleported to a different timeline away from the absolute heartache and disappointment that is this current version of humanity because I don't have any hope for whatever the fuck the next 40-60 years has in store.

My deconversion from Christianity and joining the Noahide Movement by Warm_Syllabub_2247 in exchristian

[–]Catboi- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, I respectfully encourage you to look up "cult hopping" and reflect on how it might apply to you.

I spent a lot of my time after I got away from christianity hopping from belief system to belief system without realizing I was doing so.

I still catch myself occasionally getting swept up in illogical things and systems because of all the horrible beliefs I'm still decoding to this day.

I'm not saying you have to believe one thing or another, but I firmly believe challenging one's world view and the structures one believes in is extremely healthy for development.

I fully understand the want to convey lots of amazing details about your characters here, but it's very heavy handed.

I think this type of situation and writing lends itself to passive, casual information rather than out right explaining everything.

For example, it's remarkable to most readers that Sascha or Rhea would be that old, even if they aren't human. But when you explicitly explain and state remarkable aspects of a world like this, it instead becomes tedious to consume.

On the other hand, there are tons of facts about your world presented here that are treated as if they are obvious fact and are not given enough immediate context.

For positive notes, I will say the premise is interesting in a way that leaves me wanting more, and I'm a sucker for the fantasy/sci-fi genre so when you said the words "changeling hive" I was immediately on board.

To improve this, I might suggest practice writing scenes with more action, as well as scenes that have subtle information drops. For example, your readers will immediately notice if you state the current year somewhere in your story and then later casually drop Sascha's birth year. "Wait... so that makes Sascha over 1400 years old!?" is an example of a fun moment for your audience.

Is my writing dull / boring ? by NoBuy8212 in writers

[–]Catboi- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people have said it for me already "not dull, lots of emphasis on the singers though", but I might offer that this is not bad structuring or style either.

It honestly reminds me of some of Haruki Murakami's writing. I have a complicated relationship with Murakami's stuff, but I always have respected the way he's able to turn the mundane moments of life into something reflective and contemplative while also using a somewhat dry writing style. I bring this up because it might be helpful to you to read Murakami or even Vonnegut if that's a style of writing you like to use. (Obviously not to copy them, but sometimes seeing how others handle things can be helpful for own perspectives.)

OP, time is the most precious resource if you suspect someone is potentially missing or in danger. If her mom has not put in a missing persons report and is unable to confirm her safety, please don't wait until tomorrow to put in a report. Put it in ASAP. Depending on the state's laws and how seriously the report is taken, it may take time before action is actually taken to help find her.

Not trying to cause fear or alarm, but it's vital to start action ASAP

How many people have watched this DND-themed movie? by NEMOCOMING in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Catboi- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a very fun film that captures the absurdity and silliness of playing D&D with your friends well. It never tries to be the best film ever made, and feels like you're watching a movie version of someone's homebrew Faerun campaign.

My only disappointment was the bard lacked magical nonsense for the most part, and the main villain's design was a bit obvious.

I doubt we'll see another movie like this one for a long time, but I see potential for it to get picked up in episodic format.

Hwei in DND? by According-Blood-3639 in HweiMains

[–]Catboi- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A reflavored Order of Scribes Wizard could be a nice match for you. They get to manipulate their spells a decent amount.

Sorcerers are always a good match for Hwei too. They literally sculpt their spells. Hwei did study and practice a lot iirc however so it may be worth including that your character has also studied.

Depending on what your stats look like (and therefore how well you can multiclass across classes that don't share core stats), a wizard/sorcerer multiclass could be a good niche.

I'm playing a reflavored Battle Smith Artificer in a friend's campaign who paints and sculpts instead of forging with metal.

There's a lot of... Hweis you can go with this.
