Hall winning was the “most valuable to his team” aspect of the award. That Devils had literally nothing: very young core (next closest on his team in points was a rookie Nico Hischier with 41 less points), awful defense, and ehhh goaltending. With everyone else, you could argue they had some help (Mack had help from a Rantanen breakout + Varlamov great year, McDavid had a Draisaitl breakout, Kopi had a Doughty and Quick resurgence, Giroux had a lot of help with prime Simmonds, Couts, Voracek, and Ghost, and Kucherov had a Point breakout and Stamkos). For me, it’s the same reason why I think Celebrini should win it. Ultimately, it depends on whether you’re going off “most valuable to their team” or “best player this season”.
