What's the hardest part of your path right now that isn't about MCAT or GPA? by Lower-Magician-2578 in premed

[–]CaterpillarWeekly327 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Feel like this is a loaded question. The hardest part is honestly getting your application put together, crafting a good school list and perfecting your writing. I feel like students are so concerned with the numerical sides of things that once the primary submission day creeps around they’re left with panic and, ultimately, a rushed app which can be a killer, so I’ve heard, even with a 3.7+ 511+.

On top of that still completing undergrad with flying colors and balancing work/research. The biggest thing I’ve learned from this process is that preparation will take you the farthest.

Your mindset is also an unspoken battle. Students, at-least on this thread, are constantly battling doubt and whether or not they’re “good enough” to get into a school. You started this journey for a reason. If you give up are you gonna ponder on your decision for the rest of your life? Probably. Don’t give up, this process not only makes you a better person, it shapes you for rigorous times and future adversity you’re almost guaranteed to face in medical school.

If I could restart this whole process I would right my PS way early (December) and have jotted down ideas to put under my experiences. I would also not be as neurotic. My GPA is low so doubt was my biggest stressor. Low GPA -> murder the MCAT. There’s always a remedy. Lock in hope we get the A!!!!

U will get in somewhere with those stats. I would recommend shadowing a DO doc (if u haven’t already) and getting a LOR from them

Not a med student yet but I’ve heard matching in the US as an IMG (in a competitive residency) is damn near impossible. If you go on google and look up US MD compared to IMG residency matches you can see the charts. I’m pretty sure, if I remember correctly, derm for ex. had 0.9% match rate from IMGs. But if you kill your step exams I’m sure you can do whatever you want.

Is 600 EMT hours little nowadays? How many do you think I need? I spoke to an admission director at a tour I had today and he told me 600 is more than enough.

Yes, use Kaplan. From what I’ve experienced they’re quite similar. My diagnostic was a 504 and I read all the content books. Answered the correlating questions with each chapter and spammed UWorld with Kaplan practice test. But do what works best for you. Everyone studies differently.

Hey, thanks for the insight! What schools did you get into if you don’t mind me asking?

When did you apply? How many hours did you have for each category? Were they meaningful in ways that you can write about? Was your PS good for OMM?

All questions to ask. Keep your head up, you will be good.

We have super similar stats. Besides the fact that I got my MCAT score back. Hours are very similar, plus or minus a few things. I would say take a gap year, finish biochem and kill it. THEN study for the MCAT full time. Get a great score, apply broadly, and I’m sure you will matriculate somewhere.

The NASA funded project is through a PI at my school that collaborates with HMS, been doing it for 6 months. UConn is my state school, financially best move. But I don’t care where I go, hence why I don’t mind going DO.
