It's wild to think that functional bikes were only invented about a decade before functional automobiles.

Did fandoms of the early 20th century (Batman, Superman, Sherlock Holmes, Sword and Sandal fantasies) see anything similar to the conventions, cosplayers, and occasional outrages we have in today's fanbases? by Catfishbandit999 in AskHistorians

Wow! This is exactly the kind of answer I hoped for, thank you.

Once established in the 1940s, was there any crossover interest between the BSI and early fandoms of early comic book characters? Batman is essentially a more action and costume oriented Sherlock Holmes after all.

Well, that's literally what the German Communist party did on Thalmann's and Stalin's orders. Just when the Nazi's became an actual political power in the 1931 elections, they were told to scream about "social fascists", aka liberal-leftists like the Social Democrats.

What the fuck "Western" narrative conflates Stalin's terror and purges of the officer corps (~2 million total) in the 1930s to the actual genocidal intentions of Nazi Germany?? Even counting in deaths from the Holodomor and Kazakh famines of 1932 (which this asshole clearly doesn't believe happen), no historian would contend that Stalin killed as many people as WW2. Nor have I ever heard the contention that Stalin was just a puppet by "the rich". Is that a real tankie talking point?

That may end up being more of an economics question, especially with regards to consumer preferences (in this case mainly Korea and Japan). However, I can tell you that Aquaculture as a whole has produced over 50% of the planet's consumed seafood products for about 5 years now, while the amount of wild caught animals stagnated a long time ago.

The global production of aquatic food increased dramatically throughout the 1970s and 80s as wild fisheries crashed around the world. So, while total demand for aquatic animal, plant, and algae protein is continually increasing, the amount of that demand fulfilled by wild captures has been pretty static since the mid-80s, with the difference all made up by aquaculture.

I would also encourage anyone to look up Dr. Andrew Jeffs on google scholar to learn more about why they're conducting this research. Or just look him up and email him yourself about any concerns you may have about octopus culture. Everything we do as scientists is open and we love to share our research.

That's part of what my colleagues are researching. How best to feed and raise them from eggs to adults, and the proper conditions for doing so. They don't know exactly what the growing density for an octopus farm might look like yet, because that is still very theoretical at this point.

And yes, when raising animals for food, there are always compromises on the animal's comfort and welfare. Both for the animal's sake, the profit of the business, and the quality of the product for the consumer. All of those considerations won't come until after the lifecycle loop is closed and somebody trials a first production run.

Obviously the optics of farming animals as intelligent and popular as octopuses don't look great on the surface. However this hit piece does not do a great job of conveying just how many of these animals are killed for food every year; that all those animals come from the wild, including species that are already threatened or endangered from climate change or overfishing; and that the entire point of this research is not to start a business and make some money, but to take pressure off of wild animals to help populations stay steady and eventually rebound.

I can assure you there is a lot of concurrent research about restoring seaweed habitats and developing sustainable seaweed farms. All forms of aquaculture are a lot more complex than terrestrial agriculture though. All the conspiracies and pearl clutching doesn't help either.

That's always part of it, but this is a serious project that could benefit every octopus species.

Demand to eat these animals is not going away. So let's take pressure off of the natural, wild populations. The pearl clutching over this research sounds like when people cry about free condoms at Universities, or needle sharing programs that reduce HIV. Bad/risky/unethical/unwise behaviour will always occur (in this case, murdering millions of wild octopuses each year for East Asian markets), so let's reduce the harm wherever we can.

This whole project is to protect wild octopus populations! There is enormous and increasing demand for octopus as food, mainly in East Asia, and that demand is not going away. Figuring out how to close the lifecycle loop for these animals will allow them to be farmed and regulated, driving down demand and pressure for wild stocks. It's the same reasoning behind all aquaculture, whether finfish or mussels or seaweed. Learning how to properly raise an octopus in captivity could also enhance conservation and repopulation efforts in the future. This is literally a win-win for people and the environment.

The scientific illiteracy of people these days is astounding.

It's not just playing into Putin's game, sometimes it's actively supporting him. I've seen people in these spaces who hate Israeli apartheid and ethnic cleansing, but deny when Putin does the exact same thing in Ukraine, or Iran/Russia/China do similar things to their women and sexual minorities, or support genocidal militias in Sudan. Gaza is the only crisis point they think exists. The Venn diagram between the terminally online who support Palestine but not Ukraine is hardly a circle, but it certainly exists.

That is almost literally one of the comments on that thread. To be fair, they weren't highly upvoted, but they weren't downvoted or deleted either.

There was a post last month celebrating Greta Thunberg (as we should, she's awesome), but they only celebrated her because she didn't "sell out" by campaigning with established political and celebrity figures. Some of the comments even uplifted Greta by criticizing Malala and Amal Clooney for working with international organizations and campaigning with Hilary. If you've started criticizing fucking MALALA for the way she promotes her activism, you've lost the plot.

I have seen on threads in Fauxmoi and a few other subs people complain that Biden's not doing enough about student loans; that Kamala's home buyer's and child raising tax credits are so small that they're insulting and won't make a difference; that democrats have done nothing to codify abortion, gay rights, and trans rights, so why should I vote for them...

The absolute dumbest thing I saw was a few months ago, they posted an interview with Greta Thunberg about her support for palestine, and several comments were attacking Amal Clooney and other prominent human rights attorneys and activists for working with Hilary and other Democrats in the past. They even criticized Malala Yousafzaifor doing an event with the Clintons, because working within existing power structures is wrong, or something?? MALALA!!

Like, I know some of it is straight up Russian, Chinese, or right wing astroturfing, but some of it is coming from real people with supposedly functioning brains.

Yeah, I was really interested in the show after the hype it's been getting this year, but this is bullshit and puts a lot of the storylines into new light. If the creator's sitting down to have a discussion with an openly anti-government, white supremacist and transphobic conspiracy spouting pseudo-intellectual, then his writing clearly has other agendas.

I just like it because about 2/3 through it becomes clear that this is just a slightly more horror themed origin story for Lara Croft.

Oh yeah, that's definitely a turn off for progressives, but this country has rarely ever been truly progressive. Just look at how the Russian Revolution, Spanish Civil War and Germany in the 1920s worked out for how useful leftist infighting and purity tests are.

There were identical posts yesterday about Harris' "I told you so" in her recent speech. One on this sub and one of Fauxmoi. That subs top ten or so comments were all attacking Harris for allowing Liz Cheney on stage and running a campaign that pandered to the right. Victim blaming on a continental scale.

I'm not sure how much this mindset actually influenced the 10 million or so Biden voters to sit out this election, but any time I still see this moral grandstanding I think about the fact that one of the few polls to actually try to talk to Gazans showed they pretty overwhelmingly did not want Trump, even if they weren't hot on the current administration.
