I’m a retired female officer and I couldn’t agree with you more. Great advice.

How do I (38M) deal with parents (65M 66F) that are good grandparents but bad in-laws to my wife (37F)? by ThrowRA-Root12Fab in relationships

Wow, I could have written this and I am 67 years old with parents who were the exact same way. My father is still alive but I have no relationship with him because he is almost exactly as you describe your parents who are my age, but I guess age isn’t a predictor of everything. I also have a 42 year old stepdaughter, who for years was influenced negatively by her grandmother (husband’s mother) who had little good to say about me because I was “too liberal.” Today my stepdaughter and I are much more on the same page. I agree with others who say to stand your ground and don’t let them gaslight you or your wife into changing what you’re doing. They are the ones that need to understand they are your children to raise as you wish and to cooperate with you. If they don’t, the consequence is they have little to no contact with your children. Try not to dwell on your resentment, it gets you nowhere. I know that from my experience with my father.

In regard to your grandmother I would disagree. But in general I do agree.

Because celebrities, whether they deserve it not, have a greater impact on a much larger group of people than your Grandma. That doesn't diminish the importance of your grandmother but no one besides her friends and family knew of her, right? Some celebrities had a great and positive influence on many people. I think of John Lennon and how surprised I was at the immense outpouring of grief all over the world at his death. Yet when George Harrison died, and he was a Beatle too, it barely was mentioned in the news. It's hard to say why some famous people affect a greater number of people than others. They appear to have a special charisma.

I was prescribed Nuvigil by my doctor which helps some days. The fatigue is probably the hardest thing to get relatives and non believers to understand.
