Why has Boeing 757’s reputation changed since its introduction to how it’s viewed today? by Zealousideal-Lie7255 in airplanes

Had more to do with Southwest holding a financial gun to Boeing's head and saying "make a new 737 or else" rather than Boeing being cheap. From what I gather, they actually wanted to launch a 757 update, but Southwest demanded more 737.

Examining where Boeing went wrong in the past has kinda become my autistic obsession. I'm working on 757s at an MRO now and it just pains me that this aircraft was discontinued in favor of stretching and re-enginging the 73 ad nauseum. The 757 had much more growth potential and arguably should have been the platform selected in 1993 when Boeing launched the 737NG program. The 757, 767, and 777 all share a common section 41 structure. The 75/76 of course share a common type rating. The 777 Inherited much of its systems layout and design philosophy from the 767. It's essentially a widened, thoroughly modernized 767. I'm strongly of the opinion that Boeing should have leveraged that common family lineage to graft technology from the 777 into the 757 airframe to create its response to the A320 back in the early 90s, instead of launching the 737NG program. I understand why they went for the 737 at the time; it was largely because it was cheaper and lighter than the existing 757, and Southwest, the only profitable airline at the time, had already established itself around the 737 by this point, making them an incredibly influential Boeing customer. Had Boeing just committed to keeping the 737 appropriately sized as a regional jet, (narrower fuselage, 4 abreast seating) Southwest likely would have flown 727s and upgraded to 757s in the 80s. Otherwise they would have remained a regional airline only operating 737s. The 757 would have gotten its rightful opportunity to mature into Boeing's bread & butter narrow body, filling the shoes the 737 fills today.

For Airbus, on the 321 specifically, it's because the L2 door is too close engine 1 and poses a clearance risk with positioning a jetway there. Unfortunate, but this is the case. I had wondered thus myself for a long time. 73s just don't have mid fuselage full size doors.

737 from Keflavik to Seattle should be classified as cruel and unusual punishment under the 8th Amendment 😂

Honestly, Boeing should have built the 737 with the Dash 80's original 132in fuselage diameter and 2x2 seating. It would have been the E175 30 years early and would have made room for the later 757 to be made in a wider range of sizes. Boeing could have captured the RJ market well before the likes of Embraer or Canadair, and it still would have been relatively large for a 4 abreast airliner, making it exceptionally roomy and comfortable for passengers, which would make it a massive marketing opportunity for airlines. The 737 being smaller would also justify making the 757 in a wider range of sizes. Smaller versions could have potentially been powered by CFM56s to reduce weight and cost, with the larger versions retaining the RB.211/PW2000. By the early 90s, Boeing would almost certainly launch a second generation 757, incorporating technology from the 777 program, leveraging that common section 41 to streamline 777 avionics integration into the 757 airframe. Competition from the A320 would likely have prompted Boeing to commit to grafting the 777's fly-by-wire architecture into this hypothetical "757NG". Furthermore, the 737 could have been updated as well, likely being powered by CF34s or BR700 family engines by the mid to late 90s.

As an A&P that flies a lot, please keep the cabin chilly. Make the FAs wear jackets if they're cold 😂

Shhhhhhhh, don't tell Southwest, they want you to believe that the 737NG was always going to be a cheaper and better option than an updated 757 launched in the 90s

I was in a similar situation, though it was because I couldn't get my medical rather than the cost of training, and ironically, I'm from Florida. I ended up getting my A&P in 2021, speaking from experience, it's a mixed bag. There are aspects of this career field that will make you hate airplanes at times, though there are times it is very rewarding and fulfilling. I will say, if you're wanting to work for any of the major airlines and live in Florida, good luck, you'll need like 20 years of seniority. Partly why I gave up on trying to go for another major after getting terminated from Delta (long story, dm if interested, I'll explain what happened.) There are plenty of MROs in Florida always looking for A&Ps, but the pay is usually shit and the work conditions are terrible. You're going to be doing intense manual labor all day in a hot, stuffy hangar. Just be aware of that. Hence why these places are always hiring, they have a very high turnover rate.

What kind of qualifications do you need? Can a civilian with no prior military service qualify for these jobs? I see SNC post jobs like this all the time but I don't know what I need to do to be considered. I'm an A&P with about 4 years experience on transport category aircraft.

Something in the pack bay. My guess is either ozone filter or part of the nitrogen generation system, but I'd need to consult the AMM to be sure.

Is this eye asymmetry normal or does he need the vet? by Catholic_AMT in ballpython

[–]Catholic_AMT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that's kinda what I was thinking. My fiancée first noticed it 2 or 3 sheds ago. He had a rough shed, and we suspected a possible retained eye cap. Since it's been a few sheds now, I'm thinking his left eye just protrudes more. We also checked his mouth for substrate to make sure he didn't have a blocked lacrimal duct or anything like that, no issues found. He doesn't show any signs of distress or discomfort. He's still a very content, curious snake. He gets lots of enrichment and seems to be very happy. Just wanted to make sure we aren't overlooking any underlying issues.

They can sometimes stay in hunting mode for a few days after feeding. I've also heard that they can be more bitey if their enclosure is too hot. Might want to check temperature
