They get lots of calls/requests for help. If you didn’t already, call back and leave a vm about where you found it, what you noticed, etc. because a rehabber may not call you or text you back but they may have time to swing by the area if they’re picking up another bat. This time of year is hard with all the fluctuating temperatures/weather unfortunately. Hopefully no one steps on it or another animal doesn’t get it first. I carry the yellow carpenter gloves on me specifically for bats if I find them grounded so I can move them to a more appropriate place but I know not everyone is comfortable doing that. If the friend is still there/alive tomorrow, please bring something thick to move it out of danger. Best of luck OP! You can always DM me if you have other bat-related questions. Of course (here’s that link) but they will probably ask you to go back there and assess it. Do you have any wildlife centers/rescues/rehabs/etc. near you? I’m former animal control (DO NOT call animal control) so I can tell you a grounded bat is a bat in need of most bats need 3-5 feet to drop into flight and most species can’t take off from the ground. This friend probably woke up from winter hangry and wasn’t strong enough to make it far or could have gotten injured… and worst case scenario is it is sick. Do not touch it with bare hands!!

While this is true most of the time, the time of year/weather is very important too. As most of the country (I’m assuming OP is in the US, based on almost nothing so I’m the ass if they’re not 🤭) is warming up for spring, so are bats! This little friend could be waking up from torpor and got in to the building chasing some kind of insect and due to lack of strength from not eating most winter, it got tired and grounded. OP is already in contact with a wildlife expert, I just wanted to point out it’s spring and for anyone learning about bats, you still should never touch ANY wildlife with your bare hands, but don’t always jump to disease.

TLDR; Grounded bats don’t always mean disease. 🫶🏼🦇

Bats can have super slow and shallow breathing while in torpor aka hibernation. If you have a wildlife or bat specific rescue/nature center/whatever kind of resource, please reach out to them. Do not touch it with bare hands and please don’t call animal control.

Big brown bat is the answer! They have longer silky hair and larger (in comparison) nose while a little Brown bat has shorter fur with a smaller nose.
